Let's just get right down to it. I don't want to waste anyone's time here more than I've already wasted mine:
This OVA had no exposition. It started throwing around in-universe terminology right out of the gate, and while I understand that this was based off of a manga, as a stand-alone viewing experience, it sucked. Hard. There seemed to be some war going on between the 'knights' (I use that term loosely -- they were really magical girls, poses down and all) and surrounding enemy territories, but all that really did was provide a convenient backstory for the resident damsel-in-distress, a mute loli who contributed nothing to the overall experience with the exception of an eerie grin in the latter half of the episode. Yikes.
As this was only twenty minutes, there was absolutely no character exploration or development to bed found. Every character was very archetypal, from the 'cool' type to the complete doofus and token shota character (voiced by Yuki Kaji, by the way) whose character design pissed me off consistently for the entirety of the twenty minutes I was forced to look at him. The soundtrack, overall, was forgettable, though the OP wasn't bad. Voice acting was alright, but nothing fantastic, either. The animation was probably the show's largest selling point, though there were times that the characters' faces and transitions looked awkward. The backgrounds were pretty pleasant to look at, however, so that's a plus for those of you big into the 'atmosphere' of a show.
Would I recommend this? Yes. Surprised? Well, you shouldn't be -- I'd recommend this as good popcorn material ONLY... the kind of thing you can sit down with a friend or a group of friends and enjoy simply because of how completely *stupid* it is. It really is, at its core, just about a girl and her dog... and honestly, the dog was probably the best character out of the whole lot of them. Also, enjoy the hilarious sexual innuendo paired with what I can only assume was a reference to either A. Utena, or B. Guilty Crown. If I'd taken any bit of it seriously until that point, I didn't afterward. (Guys, I've literally seen better hentai. And you can quote me on that.)
Anyway, I'm going to give this a whopping 2/10. Because I did enjoy it... Just probably not in the way the creators intended.
