When Supernatural Battles Became Commonplace

異能バトルは日常系のなかで

During a Literature Club meeting, the four club members—along with their faculty adviser's niece—suddenly find themselves with supernatural powers. Now capable of fabricating black flames, resident chuunibyou Jurai Andou is the most ecstatic about their new abilities; unfortunately, his own is only for show and unable to accomplish anything of substance. Moreover, he is completely outclassed by those around him: fellow club member Tomoyo Kanzaki manipulates time, Jurai's childhood friend Hatoko Kushikawa wields control over the five elements, club president Sayumi Takanashi can repair both inanimate objects and living things, and their adviser's niece Chifuyu Himeki is able to create objects out of thin air. However, while the mystery of why they received these powers looms overhead, very little has changed for the Literature Club. The everyday lives of these five superpowered students continue on, albeit now tinged with the supernatural. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

It starts off big. The first few episodes are jam-packed with awe and with action, you'll be expecting so many great things after that first ep. Sadly, despite it being sci-fi and despite the first episode, it begins a really slow crawl of Slice of Life with themes and characters that are neither new or refreshing.
This anime went out of its way to sort of give a lesson, and it definitely gets one across, but I think it could have been better developed. It feels almost like a teen novel where the best parts are at the beginning and end and you're just left with the bulk being boring as fuck.

I'm a bit short on time so this'll be brief. A skeleton review basically.
Story: Pretty mediocre/okay I say. It seemed to have a lot more story towards the end of the series with the first half mostly being a slice of life happy-go-lucky kind of thing with little seeds of foreshadowing. It's the holiday season so I'll bump it up to 8

Animation: Not sure what else you could ask for. Nice, bright colors that don't clash or over stimulate your senses (SHAFT is notorious for their hit and miss with this area). 9 because it's not perfect but its not bad.

Sound: Nothing to complain about. I'll wait till I get my hands on the OST before I slam the hammer down. Gets an 8 for now

Characters: I feel like there's tropes in here, but that may just be the comedy and making fun of them. The Ditzy Clutz, the Tsundere, Glasses Girl, Moe(Never thought I'd use that word. Egh), the side girl...? (Kudou), etc. The more I think about it, it's probably teasing the tropes. The MC and another minor character seem to be borderline breaking the 4th wall constantly.

Enjoyment: I used it to get some of my classmates hooked on anime. So I guess they enjoyed it. It's good considering I went into this one blind and it's not typically my genre. So it gets a 9.5 round to 10.

Trigger animation is always nice and the character designs are pretty easy on the eyes. I really enjoy Inou Battle for it's humor, visuals, and overall atmosphere.

Story: We're not talking Evangelion-level of story telling or symbolism, but it's not the worst thing ever. It's just a simple, fun little story that didn't require much thinking to understand. Which I am totally cool with.

Characters: We got some generic lolis, upperclassmen, and tsundere girls in the anime, but there was one whom I felt was pretty original. Hatoko Kushikawa is a VERY likable character for many reasons. 1) She's cute af 2) Her personality is given some original thought 3) She gave us the best scene in the entire fall season of anime.

Animation: Looks good from what I could tell. All I really have to say about it.

Overall: I like Inou Battle wa Nichijou-kei no Naka de enough to make it my desktop background. Is it perfect? Of course not. Is it worth watching this season? Of course. It's funny, cute, and a simply put, enjoyable anime.

Just completed this series so my views are still fresh in mind. I can say I haven't watched any anime like this one. It is a great anime with an unexpected twist to the plot. There lies overpowered characters with awesome powers. From that statement you would expect it to be action packed. However, it is all about living life enjoying this awesome powers.
Most of the main characters have this awesome powers except Andou who has this lame power. But he takes charge over all his super-powered friends with his wonderful personality. As such there is a lot of romance in this anime. Andou is such a lovable character.
The characters are all unique and all lovably.
There is still a lot of suspense in this anime like what the hell is the "Fairy war" or who is Andou gonna choose among the girls who are all in-love with him. Well I really hope there is a season 2.

this anime dont have a real sense you don't very understand what going on and some things is missing im very dissapointed about it so lets begin

About The Story
the story dont have a soo much good story im dissapointed by this because soo much is not explained ... and some episode is not followed this is just some event appear like that and dissappear after this and i think a Season 2 gonna come for this but is gonna be very bad if they continue like that

About The Animation and Sounds
Animation and Sounds are normal but the animation look like the same of "Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo" i love this kind of animation this fun to watch and have a clean color so yeah the sounds like every 3/4 of the anime, is normal

About Charactersthe characters have a chunnibyou or not i dont know something is missing in the story and we can't explain that but some characters is enjoyable and fun like the loli..

July Andou / a great characters stupid but funny at the same time, he care about people around him i like this guy because of the stupidity he have , and we have a lot of fun with this character

Chifuyu Himeki / my favorite character because she is a loli and too much cute, his voice is too cute , everything is cute with her o_o.. i very like her i would like have a loli like that
Tomoyo Kanzaki / Tsundere plz..she can be annoying sometimes but a little fun and have something in the past about something im not gonna say

Hatoko Kushikawa / child friend and a good house wife know how to do household she is loveable but seriously for me she bother me a little...

Sayumi Takanashi / for a Secondary Main Character we dont see soo much thing about her she is in the story with the others but she like not soo much important but she is important because she can cure ... without this i think this character is not necessary but this is a good character

Mirei Kudou / about her she is a little important and have a little role in the story but she is not soo much bad but this character remind me a little bit "Ayase Aragaki from Oreimo" his face and the personality xD

About The Enjoymentthe anime can be very enjoyable but sometime your enjoyment go down because the story dont have any sense and you just want answer and you dont have answer ... the comedy is fun but the other things are not soo much good but this is fun to watch.. i can't lie on this

this is something to watch when you are tired and need to have a little fun and relax with this anime..go watch you have nothing to lost !

The chuunibyou has become quite a popular archetype in recent years. While there are several different types of this "disorder," the most common among anime characters is the Evil Eye chuunibyou, where one believes that they have special powers or special connections to the supernatural world. While this type of character has been around for a while, their popularity has exploded over the last few years, especially with the premiere of Kyoto Animation's Love, Chuunibyou, & Other Delusions, and the possibilities for this character archetype are multiplying rapidly. For example, what would happen if the chuunibyou in question, as well as some of his friends, ended up getting actual superpowers?

Taking place in the standard Japanese high school setting, our story focuses on Jurai Andou and his friends in the Literature Club. On a seemingly ordinary day, Andou and the others are suddenly granted strange and fantastic superpowers. Normally this would be an automatic setup for some kind of superhero story line about saving the world, but Andou and his friends don't seem to be interested in that at all, as they'd much rather use their powers in secret to have fun amongst themselves. From there, the story unfolds with the everyday lives of these students as they interact with each other and learn more about their powers.

The fact that they don't end up taking your standard superhero route ends up being a huge strength of the series. It almost reminds me of a more lighthearted version of the movie Chronicle. Not every kid is gonna want to immediately go out and be a superhero. Some of them might just want to mess around a bit, and that's what a good portion of the series is about. Unfortunately, the slower parts of the series were the ones where they introduced an overarching story line. There are a ton of other characters with superpowers in the background, and there's some kind of war going on, and it all gets really generic and convoluted. It's really weird how this series made five kids sitting in a club room more interesting than a looming war of supernatural powers.

That being said, the moments where it is just the main characters messing around are really enjoyable to watch. It's a big ball of fluffy, lighthearted fun with tons of laughs to be had. The humor of this series is spot on for the majority of its run time, with a lot of chuunibyou-related jokes thrown in everywhere. There are also quite a few serious moments in the show as well, and their lead-ins never feel forced or unnatural because they blend so well with the comedy, though sometimes the series is purposely jarring in tone for added effect. This brings us to episode 7, which might be one of my favorite episodes from any anime I've watched this season because it just completely shreds all of the fantastical elements surrounding the chuunibyou archetype and slams it headfirst into a wall of realism, showing us what it's like for people on the outside to try and interact with this character on an emotional level.

However, this isn't just a comedy series, as there is a very prominent "romance" label attached to this anime that soon evolves into a full-on "harem" label. While the harem elements are very light and nontraditional until the last few episodes, I would still call it a traditional harem despite the fact that there's actually very little fan service in this series. I should note as well that it's very rare for something other than a visual novel adaptation to have truly effective dramatic elements as part of its harem, and Supernatural Battles pulls off these moments surprisingly well. Unfortunately, much like other traditional harems, there is no conclusive ending yet, so I can't really give it any true praise until Andou actually makes a choice, so hopefully some additional seasons are on the horizon.

The characters initially seem very generic and standard at first. Andou is the full-on chuuni, Tomoyo is the tsundere, Hatoko is the childhood friend, Sayumi is the club president, and Chifuyu is the loli. However, as the story progresses, each of these characters has their own individual quirks and secrets that make them stand out from their usual stereotypes and turn them into much more interesting characters, with Tomoyo and Hatoko getting a rather excessive amount of focus. Unfortunately, we end up not getting as much information about how they feel about their own powers as I would have liked, so we don't really get to see how this might have changed them in some way.

The animation was produced by Studio Trigger of Kill la Kill fame, which is really odd considering that Trigger is known for purposefully breaking the mold of typical anime. The character designs are fairly generic, but still manage to be very appealing, while backdrops don't seem to do anything other than just exist. As for movement animation, Trigger's style of being purposefully low-budget can be seen practically everywhere, and I'm still not sure if this is a good thing or not. Purposefully making animation look sloppy still makes it sloppy, but they end up doing it in ways that actually works well with some of the comedic timing. As for the action and superpower scenes, they're relatively solid, but certainly nothing impressive.

There is no dub for this series yet, and I imagine it will probably stay that way, as the series is currently unlicensed. I feel that this one works better without a dub anyway, especially considering how much chuunibyou language is used throughout it.

The soundtrack was composed by Elements Garden, and I'm not gonna lie: this is probably one of the most annoying soundtracks I've heard in a while. It's not so much the fact that everything is super generic, which it is, but some of the musical cues felt very jarring and out of place. There was one particularly intense track that was unbelievably over-dramatic and kept getting worse and worse in its execution as the series went on. The opening theme "OVERLAPPERS" was performed by the four lead voice actresses of the series, while the ending theme "You Gotta Love Me!" was performed by Kato*Fuku, and both tracks provide incredible catchy J-pop tunes that are certainly worth a few listens.

Overall, while it did have quite a few elements that made it stands out from its genre peers, When Supernatural Battles Became Commonplace still suffers from a few misplaced ideas and the lack of a proper soundtrack.

Episodes watched: 3
Where chuuni meets reality difference between the two is blurred. A freak accident gives a "Literature club" residents (and seemingly not only them, based on yet unknown logic) superpowers. And the main chuuni of the series gets a useless power of dark flame, which does.. Nothing. Andd it seems like there might be people out there who know more about this situation, but maybe they are just as chuuni as the chuuni can be. Hell if I know.
If Chūnibyō demo Koi ga Shitai was a romcom, this so far seems like a pure com, which main attraction point would seem to be relative cuteness of the characters and overall art. Yes, they are cute: redhead Tomoyo takes the 1st place for me, with student council president Mirei on 2nd and Satomi-sensei on 3rd. I mean I want more Satomi, actually. She sleeps at work with her boobs up in the air and hands a student his handheld console using her pantyhosed leg. She needs more screen-time, because she seem to have more, that chaotic cuteness behind her, unlike other characters.
And other characters beside chuuni male protagonist have a mentioned redhead (tsundering the guy), a bossy-soft-hearted black-haired girl, a silver-haired shy one, a loli and Mirai, that seems to live in a world of her own. She is a stalker, but a bit overzealous, but still, I'd take as a girlfriend unlike Andou (male protoganist), at least until Tomoyo stop pretending. And then I'd keep both of them.
Actually this anime is like a harem-version of Mikakunin de Shinkoukei - characters even have similar eyes style. But it seems to be overreacting to everything (or almost everything). Which is common to chuunis, but... Rikka Takanashi was a chuuni, with deep scars, battle scenes there were used not simply to amuse, but help her overcome those scars. Here chuuni is for chuuni. For kicks. At least I do not see a good back story yet. The one that will make sense and be serious, and not fall into chuuni again midway the explanation.
So... Giving this one a chance in due to overflowing cuteness, but if it won't show some time to seriously approach the story - I'll stick to wallpapers and screencaps.

So, a new anime with very little in the way of fans, from what I see, at least.

Reminder that this review was written after viewing the second episode and before the third episode has aired and without reading the light novel/manga counterparts.

So, it's not an easy thing to catch a viewers attention on a first episode but for some unfathomable reason Inou Battle wa Nichijou-kei no Naka de managed to do it for me. The story may come across as almost cliché with the "bunch of kids get powers and do stuff with them" thing going on but it moves on pretty quickly and begins to delve into how it affects the students lives and, again, while not being anything too special managed to keep me entertained.

The characters, while having a less-than-descriptive introduction to the show actually managed to become interesting. Given that over half the cast are near-duplicates in terms of personality the "powers" that each possess offer something unique and interesting. Plus they've got all the anime stereotypes down and out of the way in the first episode so I guess that's good. My first thought when seeing a male main character surrounded by females was "oh god another harem" but on the contrary even the idea that the show was meant for harem dissipated instantly by the tone that the anime simply possessed.

All things aside the animation isn't anything to brag about. While I did notice parts where the animation stood out to me on the whole it's the kind of animation one would come to expect from an anime of such stature. The music is something I can't ignore, however. In my mind music is what gives any scene in an anime life and I was not disappointed. In all honesty there was only a few situations where I found myself really noticing and enjoying the music, the OP being one of them, but when I did by god it made me want to put the OST -if it ever exists- on repeat for hours.

Personally I think this is one of those anime that's like Marmite. You either love it or you hate it. I wanted to dislike this anime but somehow it made my love it with it's sense of humour and characters simply being what makes the anime so far. I can not wait to watch the rest of it and all I can do is recommend it and hope it doesn't let itself down like I know others have.

(Also my first anime review ever so hopefully I didn't sound like too much of an idiot here)

daniel.russell - 2014-10-07 04:48:54

Review after 1st episode.

The first episode was rather enjoyable, and looks like it could turn out to be a nice fun anime. After getting amazing (well, mostly..... ; ) ) powers out of nowhere, a group of friends seem to go about things like not much has changed, other than having a monthly power checkup (which includes friendly sparing matches). They then find out that they are not the only ones who have gained powers, and the episode ends with a mysterious character who seems to know what's going on.
