Glasslip

グラスリップ

What if you hold the power to hear the voices or see fragments of images from the future? Would that be a good thing or a bad thing? Glasslip follows the life of Touko Fukami, an aspiring glass artist born from a glass artisan family. She enjoys her worry-free life in Fukui, save for the fragments of images that she sees on occasion. On her 18th summer, she meets the transfer student Kakeru Okikura at her school, and then again at her favorite café called Kazemichi together with all four of her friends. The voices from the future lead Kakeru to Touko, and his arrival disrupts her mediocre existence. All six of the friends must face their most unforgettable summer full of hope, affection, and heartache.

So I started to watch Glasslip with the idea that it was a bit like Nagi no Asukara, so i might enjoy it. But no... It was not at all like NagiAsu. The characters pissed me off like waw, i hated every characters in this anime ! The animation is great besides the "dezaki effects", but the plot, omg the plot. IS THERE A PLOT IN THIS SHIT ? REALLY ? There was nothing, just nothing every episodes was empty. EMPTY. And the final was so mindfuck.

One of the worst anime i've ever seen.

(oh one good point just the music. THAT'S ALL)

*SPOILER*

Not really but who cares anyways? You shouldn't care about the story if you're preparing to watch this anime... You'd be greatly disappointed if you did.
I've honestly never reviewed anything but after watching this anime I just can't stop myself from ranting about it...
I had great expectations for this anime when I started it because the animation was extremely gorgeous and the opening was interesting too but everything afterwards was just terrible...
I'll start with something positive first: The soundtrack is partially classical piano music and you can never go wrong with that, especially if you want to make a gorgeous, deep anime. The other soundtracks were good to mediocre with the opening being the best and the ending the worst. The animation was extremely nice and I would even go as far as to say that I'd watch it just for the animation alone. That's about all the positive things I have to say about this anime.

But like I said, everything else is just rubbish: The story was really none existent. It was supposed to be about a super natural ability that links two people together but the "power" (which turns out to be useless) really didn't matter at all. Every romance was extremely forced. All the characters were really boring and didn't have enough backstory to emphasize with. There is in general a lack of backstory what so ever and the "story" takes really weird turns sometimes, like in episode 12 which it's just an entire episode depicting the "glasslip" (I guess you could call Fukami Tohko's ability that since it's some sort of "slip" when she looks at sparkling glass...) of the main female protagonist. I believe that there is some sort of deep thought behind every episode but I think it might be too deep for me to understand... Every episode ends with a cliffhanger and it's really annoying.

Overall I wouldn't recommend it at all. No matter what genre you're looking for, you wont get anything out of this anime, unless you're looking for pseudo-deep "artistic" anime... If that's the case then you'll strike gold with this one.

A lot of times there are some anime that just suck. This is probably due to poor writing of the creators, trying to make something cool, but ultimately failing. However, they are decent enough to at least sit through the entire season. An example of what I'm talking about is something like Freezing. The characters were dumb as hell in that anime, but at least it was somewhat enjoyable with this action.

Then there is that ONE anime that comes every year, that just sucks so bad that it was either painful to watch or just leaves you confused. Or makes you more stupid. Glasslip is that one s*** anime for 2014.

Story:

The anime follows Touko Fukami, a 17 year old girl that happens to be able to see into the future by looking into that shine bright, or something like that. During a festival, she encounters another person that is also able to see into the future. Together they.... you know what? I have not idea what the hell this anime was even about. It seemed that there was no legitimate plot to be followed. I mean it tries to be a romance, but ... I don't know. I give up, my brain hurts from trying to figure out what the story for this anime, even if there is one.

Characters:

*sigh* I can't tell what's worse: the story or the characters. Let me give you an idea of what kind of characters are in this anime. This girl likes the guy she is living with, but they're not together. Just, for some reason they live together. A guy likes this one girl that has weak body, or is just sick. But that sick girl is apparently bisexual, and is in love with Touko, the main character. Touko is liked by the guy that lives with that one girl that likes him [If this is confusing you, then just quit, the story is even worse]. Worse thing is that they're all friends. Oh and you get this one girl that tells a hot guy, "stay hot." For what reason? I have no idea.

Animation & Sound:

The only thing that is actually decent in this anime. But I suck at describing animation and sound, so I won't be going into full detail.

Overall:

I can't believe that I found an anime that is probably just as bad as school days. The plot in nonexistent, and the characters are horribly done. It also doesn't help that nothing actually happens in a majority of the episodes. So it's not even remotely easy to sit through and watch it. I'll give this anime a score of 3 / 10 but even this score seems pretty generous.

While there's technically one episode to go, I doubt it'll do anything to change my mind on this series. In short, Glasslip is a waste of time. Each episode feels like a slog to get through due to the poorly told story, that feels like there's more going on that they care to tell you, and the extremely bland characters whose dialogue ques feel more at home in something like a Miyazaki film than this SoL series. The director expects us, as the audience, to automatically understand all the vague happenings and conversations throughout and thus totally get what the story is all about. Plus the visual direction and pacing are terrible with an over-use of frosted freeze frames and extremely pointless ten second filler scenes that only serve to make the main plot and storylines drag on longer than they need to. The only saving graces are the animation and music.

Basically, don't waste your time on this series. There are better shows out there that are worth your time.

*SPOILERS ARE PRESENT WITHIN THIS REVIEW, BUT WHO CARES WE ALL KNOW THAT THIS ANIME IS SHIT*
Ok...Let's begin this review with the title, "Glasslip". Now you're all like "what the fuck does this title mean or imply", well let me provide you with an answer. "Glasslip" contains two words put together for no fucking reason: "glass" and "slip", we all know what glass and the verb slip is/means, so if we were to put both definitions together, the title literally implies the glass is slipping...? This is Amazing! Just look at the title on your screen and stare at it for 30 minutes, then look at the visuals of the cover. Let's see, we got three rows of high school students, first we got my boy kirito's brother looking fresh, then we got 2 girls looking at each other like fucking retards, and the last row we got 2 guys 1 girl... "2 guys 1 girl". Now let's look back at the title, "Glasslip", I can kinda see that connection, between humans and ...glass? This is Amazing! Now I'm just gonna give the sound, art, and enjoyment a 10 because really if you watch the first couple of episodes, you realize how fucking godly this anime is...It's just so refreshing like, you know the feeling when you held in your shit for so long and then let it all out...OMG I feel like that every time I finish an episode because it's just so unexplainably GOOD! Let's move to the best part, Characters:

This Anime has THE BEST FUCKING CHARACTERS I've ever seen! Like they just so good and entertaining to watch. In fact so good, I'm gonna take my time and explain each character thoroughly while providing them a nickname beside their actual names:

Fukami Touko also known as, "Fucking Retard"
This is girl is basically one of the best female MC's to be introduced because she is so stupid. Whoever made this character is a fucking legend, she's your typically teenage girl that does not know what love is, I mean her reactions are just priceless. For example, a man confesses his love for her, what does she do...She politely blushes and says "Thank you" and runs away. Umm is the man supposed to reply "you welcome" or some shit. This is Amazing! Another example: she had just been confessed to by a girl, what does she do...She simply replies with "what?" and then seconds later it's like it never happened (Best Reaction). Overall, I love her character because she is a fucking retard, and I like watching stupid MC's! 10/10

Imi Yukinari also known as, "The man who got dumped"
As we all should have known, this is the guy who Touko politely dumped. He is a runner who broke his knee, has no girl, and yeah, his life sucks. This is Amazing! That's pretty much all I can say about him since he doesn't fucking matter or affect the story in any way, he's basically a nobody. 10/10

Nagamiya Sachi also known as, "The Bitch"
At first you see that she's really innocent, type of likable shy character, cute...NAH! This girl is a fucking bitch, she just wants it all! For example, she a tells a kirito's brother to back off their group because your making Touko fall in love with you. WHAT?!?! Is it really David's fault that a girl is falling in love with him... OK? Now let us continue, she then confesses to two people at the same time, a boy and a girl...WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU?!?! This is Amazing! 10/10

Takayama Yanagi also known as, "Retard Poet"
This is girl is freaking sick and so smart, the metaphors she texts and says to people are just top notch. Like her metaphors are so good and smart that you wouldn't understand them at all, it just sounds nice and stupid. Let's see, " it's your fault Yuki isn't attractive anymore"... ... ...? FUCKING AMAZING! 10/10

Shirosaki Hiro also known as, "Justin bieber"
This was the man that got confessed to with Touko, his reaction was just relief and joy even though the girl he loves, loves a male and female. "As long as you love me", he feels no ways even if she liked more than one person. How beg can a person get. This is Amazing! 10/10

Okikura Kakeru also known as, "Kirito's Brother"
THIS IS THE BEST CHARACTER IN THE WHOLE WORLD, he is just so wise and caring. This is man was the reason I watched this show because he looks like he can be Kirito's brother. Anyway, this was the character that brought the drugs to the group, he is the reason why they started to see things through the glass. Basically behind the scenes, they would all as a group, take drugs together, therefore making them see a bunch of shit through the glass. This is Amazing! Not only that, this guy is also a retard, the way his mind portrays situations and feelings is so realistic. Also he begins to fear Touko through the cause of the drugs they took in the alley, he starts to think of her endangering his life... ... ... ... IM LOST...Fuck it! 10/10

I'm not so sure about the current genre. For a slice of life kind of anime, the plot (THERE'S A PLOT???) somehow goes from happy, carefree to everybody hates this guy:
The story kinda is all over the place. As it goes on, you'll probably agree it's somewhere along the lines of Drama, Romance, and Supernatural(the whole future thing). You eventually lose track of "Slice of Life" as the anime progresses. It's definitely interesting, but you start to hate some of the characters. And then you wonder, how did these guys ever become friends in the first place? It just seems like the love triangles just hang out with each other.

It's rather awkward in general. She's jealous of him liking her, she's angry they like each other instead of liking that guy or that girl and so on. But it does make u wonder what crazy shit will happen next.

The animation does make up some points lost to the hectic story and random characters. And for the sound, it's nothing special, though I do like the opening theme for it.

Characters? As I did say before, its a bunch of people slapped together by love triangles and seething hatred for a certain guy who just happens to be the main character's love interest and vice versa. There is little to no character development besides the basics for every main character. This image describes their so called "friendship"

Enjoyment? I'm a bit too confused to enjoy the story or characters (I don't even have a favorite character as it seems they're all wackos) but the animation sure as hell is pretty. Overall I can't really give it a real score because it's still ongoing. Maybe some plot twists in the last.. what 3-4 episodes will give me some enjoyment and explain things.

(P.S. I understand the glass part, but what's with lip? Or is it Glas-Slip, as in a slip in time? Who knows, i don't even understand the future fragments thing and its the 9th episode)

Edit: I dropped this after episode 10 because I could not bear to watch it any longer. However, this is only my opinion. My suggestion:
Watch it if you're bored.

bsawayn - 2014-08-15 23:51:22

I  dislike it when a show expects you to believe that the main cast are actually friends by just placing them together. I don't see how they ever got to be friends in the first place. I really had high hopes for the show but its like they care more about their own relationships then the fact that one of their friends can see the future.
I would say the animation is the only redeeming quality but when you use so many still frames and unnecessary shots to fill the gaps between scenes then I have to disagree.

harrison27 - 2014-07-16 00:51:29

2 episodes in and it's failed to introduce the characters or set the scene, the viewer is chucked hopelessly into a weird story abut chickens and seeing the future which makes absolutely no sense. People that know me will know I'm a sucker for this type of genre. I am their target audience. I've been unimpressed with their story and really you can't make that back. No matter how pretty it looks (which to it's credit it does well) it cannot make up for the bland ill explained characters that the show has.
Your much better off checking out Sakurasou, Toradora or Kokoro Connect, the latter's genre is almost identical aswell.

rowe.vada - 2014-07-12 06:21:57

I don't understand to much the first episode. But after the ending of 2nd episode, I can't wait for the next episode!

jratke - 2014-07-05 21:13:43
