[Old review is old.]
While I complained about the messy finale and the moe, I gave Sound Of The Sky praise for being awesome everywhere else, and took it as a highly enjoyable and relaxing package. I loved spending my time in the peaceful town, experiencing whatever the script brought, and I wouldn’t mind taking time to visit the setting a couple more times. Thus come in these specials.
Part 1: In which the cast has a watergun fight.
The first special involves Kanata and the rest of the cast having a mock battle in order to see who gets to see the secrets of Clocktower Fortress’ cellar, or who gets to keep it under wraps. It ends up being a fun little side story inserted after episode 7 in the anime, but it contrasted horribly to how down to earth the mood of the show was up until that point. Out of nowhere, a playful fight in the middle of relaxing everyday life scenarios, followed by a drinking party leading to unexpected light sexy times. I wasn’t as impressed with it as I was with the other episodes the show had to offer. It felt more like half-assed filler than an opportunity to bathe in this world even more and see what more interesting stuff we could get out of it. It would be better to come at it once the show’s done and over with for awhile so that the tonal change doesn’t feel too conflicting, but even then the content they give doesn’t offer more than a few fun laughs.
Part 2: In which Kanata talks to everyone about dreams.
The second special acts as an epilogue to the show. After a few smart visual motifs to show how far the cast has come since the show left off, it proceeds into a short story that feels closer to what the show had to offer. It fleshes out some of the side characters and expanded the setting in terms of lovely visuals. It was the stuff that made the show shine bright in the first place and it certainly didn’t hurt to see more. We also get significant exploration for Rio’s character, and even though the main cast received equal focus in great development in the show, I might have liked a tad bit more from Rio. The ending is as good as the final note from the anime, and since that finale flopped in earlier places, this epilogue could be a better place to leave off in some areas. So this one is an addition that doesn’t drag the show down in any way.
Production values are nearly as good as in the actual show. In contrast with some rather plain backgrounds in the watergun episode, the epilogue has a splendid scene with a ruined castle and a deep blue sky with windy clouds executed gorgeously, solidifying my adoration for the setting.
So what’s the takeaway from these specials? A fun episode for a lighter mood, and an aftermath that offers enough to be satisfied. Certainly not a bad coupling of extras, just underwhelming considering the levels that the anime his so often. If the show’s done and over with and you find yourself wanting a bit more, this pair should work fine.
