I was skeptical when I first started this anime. I'm not a big fan of the idol genre, the music usually sounds cheesy and cliche. To top it all off, these are male idols, and after having watched Shounen Hollywood, which was alright, I was expecting Starmyu to be similar. However, I was pleasantly mistaken.
Let's start with the cons. The animation could have been better during the dance scenes, but there were important parts of the show where they clearly put more effort into it, which made up for it in the end. The story started a bit slow in the beginning, and I feel as though not all the loose ends were properly tied up.
With that aside, Starmyu was a very enjoyable show. The struggles the characters faced and how they pushed through them was very inspiring and motivating. Each character has their own unique personality and back story as to why they want to sing and perform, and you can really connect and sympathize with them. You find yourself rooting for Team Ootori, the underdogs who strive to do their best despite all the adversities thrown at them. They never lose heart, and the friendship and teamwork shared among them is the driving force of their confidence and success. The characters are very well-written as well as the dialogue between them, and there's a perfect mixture of emotional, comedic, and serious scenes.
Remember how I said I hate most idol anime music? Well, Starmyu's was not bad at all. I liked most of the songs, and the voice actors could actually (wait for it...) sing! I'd listen to these songs on my own, and even the instrumental OST, specifically the piano pieces, were top notch. A+ to the musical producers on this one.
Overall, Starmyu is a moving, funny, roller coaster ride of a show. With the morals of standing up for what you believe in and never giving up on your dream, you'll finish this anime feeling touched and inspired.
