I know I was going to do Kantai Collection, and I will soon, but this is not something I should let by so lightly, also I was bored. I thought this would be somewhat entertaining but it isn't. Why? You'll see. (also another anime but I'll get to that one much later)
So without further ado...
Story: Mitsuki Ikuta works for the Houchiku Corporation, making movies. To all who know her, she is perceived as being a very infantile woman, still wearing childish fashions. A fan of the detective movie genre, she suddenly finds herself chosen to be the main producer of a new film - but it's a "hero movie" (a genre generally considered childish). Determined to succeed, regardless, she takes on the job.
Now that seems like an interesting idea for a show, I like the idea of an anime about trying to make an anime and even with its short running time they could have done a lot to this... but they blew it all sky high.
The story goes all over the place. Constantly shifting tones/moods, and starting and ending scenes without any transition, and don't even show the ups and downs of working in an animation company [making it seem suck-ish and doesn't do a good job in execution and inspiration talk]. They barely show the productions and how they do things in general, the closest we get is seeing the actors perform in stupid stunts.
And speaking of which, there's the fan service... where do I even begin? I mean it usually normally doesn't bother me that much, just as long as its got a purpose, for comedy (Softenni), further story (Yuri Kuma Arashi), or isn't used a lot (Ro-Kyu-Bu). But here, its not the worst, but its the most pointless, you could literally get rid of these scenes and the show would be largely the same, hell it'd be even better! (Also why can't they make up there minds on whether or not they want to censor the nudity? :S)
Animation: It's mediocre at best. The characters, well mainly girls, have ok designs, while the guys look creepy as fuck... no offense to anyone who... worked on them (ain't it always?). Movements are standard, and at times pretty sloppy, hell sometimes there are scenes with the characters talking but there mouths never move!
Sound: The ending song is alright, the last part of the song is pretty upbeat and catchy, though the visuals are uninspired. Not to mention, almost everyone sound bored, irritated, or just stiff.
Character: The MC is just like Aoi from Shirobako except completely watered down, one dimensional, and is not developed at all. She's basically almost the same except not as good or well developed. The girl wants to be taken seriously, gets stressed out a lot, and... hates being called a child I guess? She's got no backbone or strong traits like her and doesn't get developed much either.
The rest of the characters are either stupid, annoying, cruel, or a fucking pervert! No one in this is likeable in this and characters change at the drop of a hat in crazy moments. This show is dreadful. Also the ending is shit, and the credits actually 'playfully' mock you, the viewer while insisting that you watch the show within show. (Maybe I will, maybe I won't)
Enjoyment: Nope
Overall: Smash Hit? More like Mah Shit! Why's it even called that? The show they tried to do ended up being a failure (which is ironic since it looks miles better than Smash Hit, more like a so bad its good kind of way). I would not recommend it whether or not you want to see a comedy or drama or even ecchi!
Pros: Nice music, like the premise
Cons: Execution is shit, characters are shit, ending is shit, its all around shit
Recommend: Just watch Shirobako or Animation Runner Kuromi instead.
