This Boy Caught A Merman

この男子、人魚ひろいました。

*The Second OVA of Kono Dan series. They say look before you leap and make sure you can swim before you go in the deep water, but when a picture of his late grandfather falls into the ocean, Shima jumps in after it without thinking. Nearly drowning as a result, he is instead saved by a very perfect stranger... one whose strangeness extends to only being human from the waist up! For Shima, who's always felt like a fish out of water himself, it's more than just a revelation, and the young man and merman quickly begin to bond in ways neither anticipated. And yet, it's going to be far from easy sailing. After all, Shima and Isaki aren't just from opposite sides of the tracks, they're from entirely divergent species, and swimming in separate gene pools may make maintaining a long term relationship a whole different kettle of fish! This now has a special place in my heart for a sweet and romantic shonen-ai one shot.

I set this aside saying to myself "I'll watch this later for the sake of watching it. It'll probably just be like the rest of yaoi/shonen-ai I've ever watched/read" only to be blown away when I actually watched it.

The story line isn't too complex, but manages to set a mood and tone just right for the setting of the story. It isn't rushed, or way too slow, and somehow I feel the progress made was realistic (despite the very unrealistic partner).

And the artwork. This was my first encounter with artwork like this but I thought it was so beautiful and so captivating that even if you don't like the story you would immediately fall in love with the art.

And the characters. Watching Shiima as he struggled with finding his identity, as well as watching him grieve for his grandfather almost brought me to tears. So many other anime (making a slight generalization here) have the tendency to brush off the death of a relative which was very close to the main character in order to focus on the plot and end up making the death seem trivial. KDNH managed to integrate it into the story, using the close bond Shiima and his grandfather shared to make the story only that much sweeter.

The music was so beautiful too. Really it was. I always say that the music in an anime makes for half of the enjoyment and KDNH did not disappoint. I am so disappointed that I could not find the music to download.

I just finished watching it and I'm currently in tears because of this beautiful anime and I can only say that it is a must watch for any shonen-ai lover.
