Review for the full series of 6 movies.
Burning punches! Giant explosions! Superhuman strenght! Sounds like your cup of tea? Well you might be in for something reaallyy good.
Towa no Quon is a series of 6 movies animated by studio bones and directed by Umanosuke Iida. It aired during summer and fall 2011 and ranks as one of the best action series i´ve seen. And while it has some glaring problems it´s positives far outweigh it´s negatives. If you can expect one thing from Towa no Quon it´s action. Lots of it.
The story:
Towa no Quon is set in a slightly futuristic japan were our main character Quon, a so called "attractor" (basically humans with superpowers), and his attractor friends are fighting against Custos, a secret organization that... well, doesnt like attractors since they disturb the order with their often destructive superpowers.
The main goal of Quons group is to gather newly awakened attractors and hide them from Custos while also teaching them how to not kill themselves and others with their newfound powers. These powers can range from something simple as "being really really fast" to more complex stuff like "teleportation, transformation, or creating some weird bubbles that destroy everything they touch".
Custos on the other hand consists of mostly cyborgs and are trying to kill new attractors as soon as they surface. Often clashing with Quon in the process.
So the bad guys are hunting the good guys and in the end they clash against each other in a quite epic manner.
The story isnt the most original, and while it does have some twists and turns, there werent really any unexpected events. So it´s story wasnt the greatest, but it certainly served it´s purpose at keeping me intrigued enough to want to know more.
Characters:
Towa no Quons characters are really hit or miss. Most of it´s characters tend to be really bland and while some characters develop further, most of it´s cast is rather forgettable. Even Quon, the main character, suffers from this as he stays mostly one dimensional during the early parts of this how. He does develop later, but his morals are just too pure to really get into, but he had his fair share of seriously badass moments. The only other worth the mention would be Epsilon, a cyborg of Custos, his story and personality had alot more going for it and was actually really interesting, but for spoiler reasons i wont tell you more about him.
While being mostly one dimensional the cast is actually rather likeable and their designs were really cool to look at.
Art and Animation:
So now we´re finally talking about the really good points. To put it simply, Towa no Quon looks amazing. The animation during the fight scenes is incredibly fluid and just really cool to look at. Blows have impact and the explosions really felt like stuff that was exploding. The character designs are interesting while staying rather realistic, the action was amazing, the setpieces were a feat for the eyes and the lighting was really good. There is some cgi in there but it never felt out of place and was almost never used in combination with traditional animation.
The fight scenes in combination with the animation and art quality really are what makes this show so great.
Sound:
The soundtrack was surprisingly really good and complemented the battle scenes as well as the slower ones perfectly. This series also handled silence quite well and had a distinctive battle theme that i could listen to hours in repeat. So one could say the music´s pretty good. It´s ending song is shit though.
But have a taste of the battle music:)
Enjoyment/Overall:
So now the final question, did i enjoy this? Or more importantly would you enjoy this?
Hell yes!
The action scenes were superb, visuals and sound were a pleasure to eyes and ears respectively and the story and characters were just good enough to give a damn about. While not being the best written thing out there, it certainly stands as one of the most enjoyable animes i´ve seen. If anything this thing provides entertainment.
I little bit more creativity in its story and it would´ve been something truly special, but as it stands this is simply a really awesome action series.
It has exploding punches, what do you want more?
