KIZNAIVER

キズナイーバー

The story takes place in Sugomori, a city built upon reclaimed land that once prospered as a futuristic city. One high school boy living there, Agata Katsuhira, is somehow unable to feel any pain. One day just before the start of summer break, Katsuhira is called by a mysterious girl named Sonozaki Noriko and chosen to become one of a group of people who share one another's pain: a "Kiznaiver." Several of his classmates have also been chosen as part of this group, but they're all people from different circles who normally wouldn't associate with each other. (Source: Crunchyroll)

Sugomori City, a beautiful futuristic designed city with an astounding view of a draw bridge connecting city over the ocean, in fact, is an experimental city created for a colossal experiment named as the Kizna System. This information is prevented to leak on public, keep hiding behind its citizen consciousness about the real purpose as experimental city. This experiment involves even mayor and the officials, and a few researchers for making the Kizna system works. The purpose of this system is to make peace in the world. When everyone understands others suffering, they will try to avert something that hurts others, or they will try to face the pain together and helping each other. THAT’S ABSURD (for me). (So damn nonsense for me). As the experimentation, Kizna system researchers choose seven persons to get involved in this experiment, thus they become our main characters that will reveal the twists as effects from Kizna system. Will this kind of paradoxical system success?

The characters in Kiznaiver bring tons of emotions to the surface. Up to a scale where it can touch your heart well. At first, it is just about the physical pain that connected one another. When a character gets punched or falls, it affects other six characters in Kizna system as well. How does it work? Well, it’s simply because every characters part of body, in the wrist area, planted by chip. This chip will bond their pain. I don’t mean to spoil the fact, you can find the explanation right on the beginning of this show. Kizna system improves to higher level where it isn’t not physical pain anymore that affects them, but also heartache. One can instantly feels someone’s anger, sadness, disappointment, jealousy (Wut? Jealousy? Oh yes yes! It does have lovey-dovey in it), when it really hurts a host.
The characters development reaches its peak later on. At this point, emotional state is bonded. However, it happens in the middle of the whole show which is, for me, rather slow. Halfway of the show is surely slow. It’s like common friendship theme and spiced up with science fiction by the Kizna system. Still, the improvement at the point when everybody can feels others suffering is overwhelming. They act out uniquely and expand with friendship they’re in. Complicated drama it is. (This is when you will find the truth behind the Kizna system and the reason why there is a character showing no emotion, and another feel just slight of pain even if got hit hard.)

As guaranteed in the 00 episode *if you watched this*, the visualization is nothing like common series in somehow slice-of-life and drama genres. I know some of drama series which has freaking good animation such as Nagi no Asukara with its exquisite details of blue ocean and clear sky, and Kiznaiver now is one of those well-built graphics for drama anime series. Real life like layouts feel more substantive as the story goes dramatic.
They picked up appropriate seiyuus as well for this project. When everything turns out to be so blue, both visualization and seiyuus support the idea that it really rips you heart off. The OP theme song nothing much memorable for me, sung by BOOM BOOM SATELLITES “LAY YOUR HANDS ON ME”. The ED theme song has good animations as it’s played. Sangatsu no Phantasia is on duty for the ED, "Hajimari no Sokudo (はじまりの速度)".

What I like is I didn’t expect the story of this anime series. For most of the happening, it is so good. I give it 8.5.
Pros:

  • No matter how you look at it. The explanation of the storyline seems like the show is about toying people’s emotions. Making other as guinea pig. But, it’s not as bad as it is, and Kiznaiver didn’t make me feel like this show is a trash for making fun out of people’s feelings.
  • Well-built graphics.
  • Categorized as drama genre anime, but it is so rare to have drama will have a storyline like this. I never imagined what might came next when watched this. I mean, it was good.
Cons:
  • It is not clear about the concept of Seven Deadly Sins that put in into the show. They didn’t exactly tell about it, as well as The Forgetful Priss that mentioned. Well, I can grab it a bit however it will be more relieved if the show did explain something as clarification. Missing information.
  • Slow pace for the halfway of the show. Thankfully, I didn’t drop it.

The story itself is slow but the intention was to focus on characterization so I cannot fault the show for this however some more comedy or some heavier drama to keep the story on a faster pace would be nice. Characters in the show were really interesting except for a couple of the characters who felt rather archetypal. Also in one of the episodes it is revealed that Tenga is afraid of dogs but other than that one episode it is never mentioned again so I think the show needed to reflect on past episodes to add some more possible comedy. As far as animation goes it is in trigger style but more grounded to suit the pace and type of story the show is. Sound was rather average except the opening which make sup for it all being the best opening of the year, in my opinion, so far. The voices were really well done especially Nico who I thought had the most range of a voice with being angry, sad, and happy while keeping her voice somehow cute. Even though the story can be a little slow this is still my favorite show of the season because it was able to capitalize off of its characters to create memorable scenes. I give the show a 4.5/5 and Nico is waifu of the season.

I really can't belive this is over, this spring has been better just because every sunday I can watch this anime. I jusr cry alot, because my connection with Chidori it was something real.
I cannot except the ending, but i always know that it will end this way.

In some point, this make me happy.

waylon.reinger - 2016-06-26 02:12:36

The Characters are good
The story is orginal and enjoyable

The animation is even good.

HOWEVER

After episode 9 it just fell flat and it just became so self serving. Not to mention it shoved the "friendship is magic" bullshit down our throats

I was expecting so much or at least something different from this show

while visually it good and it has good characters i feel the plot could have been expanded on or at least cut out the "bonded by emotion" sub plot

Studio Trigger pulled the double this spring season of 2016. Their first show I came a cross this season was the short wild and wacky tour de force of Trigger intellectual properties: Space Patrol Luluco. The other was Kiznaiver.

Kiznaiver is a big departure for Studio Trigger who have previously only ever dabbled in original works, but now they're putting their skills into a manga adaptation, a first for them if I'm not mistaken. Our "main" character Katsuhira has an odd condition in which he cannot feel pain, be it physical or, as it seems, emotional as well. His close childhood friend Chidori protects him from those who would look to take advantage of him, and if you're thinking this is some grade A shipping fuel, well you haven't even heard the half of it yet.

I say Katsuhira is a "main" character in quotations because the show quickly introduced a number of other characters who are all far more interesting than the first two I've mentioned. By the end of the first episode all these characters are abducted and given the show's trademark Kizna scars that bind them all together by making them all feel each other's pain. You might be saying at this point "this sounds like a great plot for a suspense/ mystery show", you're right it does. Unfortunately Rei Ayanami over here fucks all that right up.

Is that a choker necklace or just a really serious tattoo?

Standard creepy blue haired emotionless doll character #241, Sonozaki explains all the details of the Kizna, how it works, what her and her organization hope to accomplish, etc. all in the space of a few minutes. She then explains that the group will have to complete tests together in order to avoid some non-specific penalty (These tests are beamed to the kiznas via hologram).

All of this effectively takes out any suspense or narrative investment right at the knees. However, the worst part of it all is that the show still tries to play it off as though there is still some big mystery when clearly there isn't.

The show would have benefited hugely if Sonozaki weren't introduced at all and the Kizna scars were never explained, only leaving the hologram notes of the tests that were now underway. Now that's a damn suspense/ mystery plot right there. But even then, there are so many group situations and group outings that are done for the sake of narrative convenience that are left poorly explained in every episode that the writers felt there had to be some anchoring point for the show to go from.

Everything else from the show is solid though. The opening is nice, the animation and visuals are top notch even though the semi-futuristic light novel city trope is getting horrendously over used here in the last few seasons, and finally most of the characters do get some good development even though I found it harder to give a shit with each successive episode.

Overall, if you're a Trigger fan like me you'll probably feel compelled to watch the show from flag to flag no matter what I say. As for the passing anime fan: take it or leave it, you're not going to lose sleep either way.

Kiznaiver is honestly a good anime, it has an interesting concept behind it. (Avoiding any spoilers).  I would like to see where the story picks up.  Right now its just the main characters having dark pasts.  But each character is unique its own way.  Unique in which it's not the standard anime personas.  If you're looking for an anime with an interesting plot, this is the one.

nzulauf - 2016-05-06 05:29:45

This show triggers me, and Trigger seems to be Shafting itself. This show is weird. Not the normal kind of weird you'd expect from Trigger, though. It feels like it's trying very hard to be something. Meaningful maybe. But it takes itself far too seriously. It's fun to laugh at. Still, it's interesting at the same time. I haven't watched anything quite like this before.

The animation in the first episode was very good, and I hope the trigger tradition of spending your budget on hookers and blow half way through doesn't continue because, as it is now, it's very pretty to look at, and I hope it stays that way. Vivid colors, fluid motion and great lighting make it quite a pleasant viewing experience.

The sound is a hard one. For the opening scene, it sounded like they used actual child actors for the younger version of the main character, which made it kind of rough and unprofessional sounding, but almost more genuine, if that makes sense. The music is also a little hit or miss. The opening sounds like it could have been a chart-topping 80's techno pop single, while the second episode ended oh something you might hear as the night winds down in a country western themed bar.

The characters are intentional stereotypical, it seems. With each one representing their assigned role, or "sin," to fill their parts in the kizuna system.

I don't know whether I like this or not. It's pretty. It's different. But it feels very inconsistent. Well, it is a Trigger production, but even by Trigger standards, it's inconsistent. Not yet in the animation department, but other aspects of the show bounce between radically different parts of the spectrum. I would tentatively recommend this show, but don't be surprised if nothing really of consequence happens or it doesn't produce any landmark moments. I hope I'm wrong and it keeps getting better, but I expect it to be nothing really standout-ish.
