Let me start by saying that this was my first Mecha show, and I enjoyed it as a kid as well as an adult.
Gosohgun is a fun and witty show with clever dialogue and enjoyable characters, the show is not afraid to satirize it's own genre, and parody itself, everything is done in good fun. There's not too much beyond the "Monster Of The Day" concept where Villain's ask for money form the big boss, and they're given money (despite their constant failure) and they set up to build a weapon and attack our heroes only to be defeated by them. It rarely strays form that formula, and only on a few occasions it has calming episodes.
There is pretty much only a small hint of a story: Professor Sanada discovers new and powerful energy from a meteor crash, he find out it has teleportation powers so he uses that to teleport the spaceship "Good Thunder" and "GoShougun" The robot, our villains, who are called "The Dokuga Crime Syndicate" hear about this and decide to forcibly recruit the professor. However, the professor refuses and sets off a bomb, committing suicide. (you know, for kids) Thus the butterfly effect begins, and the syndicate target the professor's son, Kenta, who is saved by the crew of the ship "Good Thunder" and thus their adventures together begin.
What's special about the show is it answers the age old question of "What does the red button do" That's what makes it stand out from other Mecha anime at the time, and in some cases today!
the show was directed by Kunihiko Yuyama, who also worked on "Kimagure Orange Road" and "Wedding Peach" and it was by "Ashi Production" Studios.
