One of these days, I will review Yoshiteru Satou's entire filmography. And that will truly be a sad day, since I will be out of easy targets. Take the title I'm reviewing today,Generation of Chaos. It has all the characteristics of a bad video game OVA - terrible CGI, a plot that only makes sense if you have played the game (which you can't due to the fact that it has never been translated), forgettable voice acting, and extremely mediocre audio quality. So, why am I reviewing it, you may ask? Well, I already reviewed Mars of Destruction over half a year ago (hint: I hated it, it was absolute garbage), and shortly afterwards, I reviewed Skelter + Heaven (hint: I also hated it, it was complete garbage) on one of my Facebook Pages. So, I have bookended his work for when I need something easy to make fun of. Consider this my treat to myself.
Now that I'm done pretty much ripping off the intro to Prof Otaku's review of Cybernetics Guardian (feel free to read the rest of this in his voice), let's actually talk about the anime.
Since I couldn't really figure out what the plot to Generation of Chaos is supposed to be, I'll instead describe it using a metaphor: First, take the primary mechanic of the Pokemon anime. Then, make the creature designs closer to Digimon. Next, set the entire thing in the universe of an extremely generic version of The Slayers. Generation of Chaos is a rip-off of the product you would get. Before you ask, I can't think of an anime with that premise that's actually good (in fact, I can't think of any other anime with that premise).
One thing that's kind of unique about Generation of Chaos is that it's the only anime I can think of that uses both hand drawn animation and CGI with the hand drawn animation taking a back seat - sure, Gundam SEED had moments where the majority of the screen was taken up by CGI, but they were minor. Unfortunately, but somewhat predictably, the CGI here is terrible. Just like the rest of the animation.
The characters are either generic or forgettable - the only one I really remembered is Chiffon, who is basically Ash Ketchum if he was from The Slayers instead of Pokemon. Everyone else I can't really say anything about.
The sound is...mediocre. However, the sound design is actually decent. It's not enough to recommend this series, however. Also, there is no dub, since this is unlicensed - I had to resort to sites of questionable legality in order to watch this.
The whole plot itself actually reminds me a lot of another terrible OVA, World War Blue, mainly in the sense that both seem like they are leading into an eventual anime series. And believe it or not, but this show could have led into a possibly enjoyable fantasy anime. But because it's an Idea Factory work, that didn't happen.
Overall, this was a definite waste of time, and I give it a 1 out of 10, and obviously I recommend you skip this series. As previously mentioned, the series is currently unlicensed, and given the fact that the game this is for has never been released outside of Japan (to my knowledge), we're more likely to see a sequel to movie adaptation of theGolden Compass than we are to see this being licensed. As for alternative anime recommendations...just watch any of the following that I mentioned earlier in this review:Gundam SEED, Digimon, Pokemon, or The Slayers.
Oh, and if you're curious what parts 1 and 2 were, they were my reviews of Skelter + Heaven and Mars of Destruction.
