Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic
マギ The labyrinth of magicDispersed around the world, there are several bizarre labyrinths hiding incredible treasures within them. These mysterious places, known as "Dungeons," are said to be the work of Magi, a class of rare magicians, who also help people build their empires by guiding them to a dungeon. Djinns, supernatural beings that rule over the labyrinths, grant successful conquerors access to their immense power and choose them as potential king candidates to rule the world. Having spent life in isolation, Aladdin, a kind and young magician, is eager to explore the world upon finally leaving his home behind. He begins his journey only accompanied by his mentor Ugo—a djinn that Aladdin can summon with his flute. However, Aladdin soon becomes friends with the courageous Alibaba Saluja after causing the destruction of a local merchant's supply cart. In order to pay for the damages, Alibaba suggests that they attempt to conquer the nearest dungeon, taking the first step in an epic adventure that will decide the fate of the world itself. This anime is a shonen and as a shonen it shall be judged
For this review I will follow the criteria given to us by hummingbird. I will try to avoid any spoilers, there could be some minor ones, but nothing of importance.
Lets start then !
Magi is a story of two characters that fate has brought together, Alibaba and Aladdin. Even if they share the names of the famous "One Thousand and One Night" story characters there is a fundamental difference. Aladdin and Alibaba are not enemies but friends. The setting is almost the same- old Arabic continent.
After being secluded for years, young Aladdin starts his travel where he meets a strange boy named Alibaba who is serving a local rich merchant. Alibaba is not a simple servant, he has a rather ambitious dream, conquering the local dungeon. Dungeons are mysterious buildings that started to appear around the world for an unknown reason, it is said that whoever conquers a dungeon will be full of wealth and fame. After some troubles Aladdin reveals that he is not a simple boy, he can control a big blue giant named Ugo, that is a being named djinn. Aladdin becomes attracted to Alibaba(no homo), so he decides to help him conquer the mysterious dungeon. This is where the adventure of Alibaba and Aladdin begins.
The story starts in a simple way. The first arc just introduces the main two main characters and the mysterious dungeon, but at the end we are already hinted to the complicated past the two main characters had. In the latter arcs the plot becomes deeper, many new things are introduced as well as a new main character Morgiana.
The story contains a lot of comedy as well as a lot of dark elements. The mix of the two is really good and makes the story really interesting. The story is not hard to understand and runs really smoothly, for a shonen the story is really good so I think it deserves a 9/10
I think the animation is solid. It not something really impressive but it is well made. I don't think I encountered a scene where the animation looked weird except for the ones where it was intended to be (ex. funny scenes). The actions run smoothly and is really nice to watch.
Animation gets 8/10
I really like the OST.. the songs used did fit really well with the happenings. The happy ones, the sad ones and the serious ones were all well made and well used. The voice acting in the Japanese dub was great too. That's all.
I think 9/10 is well deserved.
There is a lot of characters. You can find any kind of character, from great serious warriors to tsundere princesses, but for this review i will focus on the main party + one extra.
One of the two main characters. Yes this is a shonen but it has not one but two main characters. Alibaba would be your classic shonen main character. He is stupid and naive, but has a strong sense for justice and a good heart. He usually looks pathetic and the other character make fun of him, well even tho everyone makes fun of him he is still well respected by all of them and everyone loves him. Also he is really unlucky with women and this makes him cry a lot. I feel like the author is making fun of all main shonen characters using Alibaba.... poor unlucky guy.
The second main character. He is a small perverted boy who likes big cleavage but has a good heart and loves everyone. He is very likable and cute, which works well with girls(lucky him...).His past is a mystery even for himself, and attracts many troubles in his way. He is very fond of Alibaba and thinks of him as his best friend.
The girl who joins the two main characters. She used to be a slave but was rescued by Alibaba and Aladdin. She then takes a liking to them and starts following them around until they eventually become friends. She is part of a race called Fanalis which are known for their immense inhuman strength. She appears violent and feeling less but the truth is she is cute and sometimes shy. She would do anything in her power to help Alibaba or Aladdin. She is one of the most likable characters of the series and my personal favorite.
The man of the series ! The legendary conqueror of seven dungeons and king of the Syndria kingdom. Even if he is not part of the main party he is a really important character, so i decided to include him in the review. He makes his first appearance in the second part of the series, and has a rather unique entrance. He appears clumsy and easily distracted, but soon shows his might. He is respected by allies and feared by the enemy. If he is good or evil we don't know, what we know is that he is gonna take an important part in all future events.
In the end the characters are great, you have the standard shonen ones, dark characters, and everything ... 9/10
I just love this anime. The comedy, the dark elements, the action, the girls, the manly man and the less manly man(I am looking at you Alibaba). Everything about this show is great...well maybe all the whining of Alibaba in the second arc was a little annoying.
10/10
A great shonen series. When this was written the second season was airing and the manga was selling good(top 4 in Japan 2013). Great potential to be on top alongside One Piece, and it definitely deserves it. I don't think I found any great faults in this show so the final score is:
9/10
Alibaba is (not) popular.

Anime comes in all flavors, shapes and sizes. One of the most common "shapes" is the action, or shounen, style anime. Magi is a breakaway from this style of show (aside from the named attacks) in that it touches base on psychological, economic, and mystical elements almost flawlessly.
Without giving spoilers, the show is set in a fantasy universe where "Dungeons" magically appeared in various parts of the world. Legend holds that anyone who can "conquer" a dungeon will meet fame and fortune.
THE STORY - 8/10
Magi follows the adventures of Ali Baba and his mysterious and new found friend Aladdin as they try to conquer a dungeon.
The "Dungeon Conquering" first arc is only two episodes long. The show takes a twist And follows the adventures of Ali Baba, Aladdin, and former slave Morgianna (spelling often debated).
Something interesting is the dungeons themselves. It follows the mythology of the 72 Demons of Solomon, each Dungeon being maintained by a "Djinn" who bears the name and similar powers of these 72 Demons.
I am incredibly fascinated by mythology and integrating a pre-existing mythology into a "new" fantasy world gives a boundary of depth and an increase in potential simultaneously.
I would highly recommend Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic as it is a great adventure into the hearts of three young heroes
Second season is confirmed so look forward to it!
Now, that was basically just a summary (I know). trying to analyze Magi is like trying to separate the various elements
As I said before, Magi manages to have psychological, economic, and action elements at the same time.
THE ANIMATION AND STORY - 9/10
Very rarely can I say it is almost perfect. Action scenes are fluid and lose very little in comparison to the "calmer" scenes. In fact, the actions scenes are potentially better.
As far as the music goes, it is like a neo-twist on more traditional classical music emulating the far east. That is a mouthful, but I am a music nut. Basically, it takes the themes of the "Mystical far east" and transforms it into classical composition.
If I bother to buy or download a soundtrack, it means I REALLY liked it.
Overall, I loved it. I would probably rewatch it if i weren't trying to watch everything else that exists in this known universe.
Please enjoy Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic.

A great anime that borders the line between shounen and a normal action show. The story is very well written and balances action and story perfectly in the later parts. The animation is pretty average and the sound uses some sound effects (the fire and lightning) that I swear that I have heard used before in other places. Characters are very well written and interesting overall. I thoroughly enjoyed the action. Keep in mind that the series takes 8 episodes to get really good so hang in there and force yourself through the first few episodes and you won't be able to stop. Watch it now on crunchyroll.com
