Inuyasha is a very fun, albiet very flawed series. Does Final Act improve upon the flaws of it's predecessor, or is it just a huge dissapointment? Let's find out!
StoryTo quickly sum up the story of the original series, Kagome falls down a well and gets transported to feutal Japan and meets Inuyasha. After learning about the Sacred Jewel Shards, Kagome, Inuyasha, and a whole bunch of other people they meet along the way must collect the Jewel Shards before it’s too late. The Final Act leaves off right where the original series ended, and by that, I mean they don’t even take their time to explain what happened in the last show (though this is a sequel series, so you should’ve probably watched the original before going into it). So pretty much, it’s more of the same stuff from the last series, with all the demon hunting and Naraku fighting intact. If you’ve read my previous review, then you’d know that my main problem with the series is that it drags on too much. Well, for Final Act, I have the exact opposite problem. You see, Final Act was adapted from the last 200 chapters of the manga. If the show were, say, about 50-70 episodes, then they would’ve had enough time to adapt all the chapters at a reasonable pace. However, because Sunrise had to adapt all of those chapters in 26 episodes, the end product just ends up feeling very rushed.
Have you ever seen that Team Four Star video where they abridge DBZ Kai and it’s pretty much a fast-paced mess? Well, the first 4-5 episodes of InuYasha: The Final Act are like that, except without the parody that made that video so great. Because of that, the show becomes really hard to follow. The show does slow down later on, but that’s not really better. Because of how much it decided to skip, it starts to drag towards the end of the show. Also, there are quite a few questionable choices when it comes to the story, like dedicating an entire episode to how Kagome got her name, and spending an entire episode to Shippo comedy filler. I haven’t read the manga, so I don’t know if these problems are caused by the show’s new format, or if it’s because the manga went downhill at that time. Either way, I felt that the show’s story was poorly handled due to how much they decided to rush it.
CharactersThe characters from the original are back, and they’re pretty much the same as they were before. I would say that’s not a bad thing, but it kinda is. I feel like this would’ve been a perfect place to develop the characters, as the show was made to tie up all the loose ends of the original series, but they don’t jump at this opprotunity much at all. I mean, Inuyasha gets a little bit of development, but everyone else is rather stagnent. Kagome in particular could’ve used more development, as she is the main character of the show. She was never a particularly interesting character in the original series, but I would’ve liked to have seen her mature as a character, as well as developing her relationship with Inuyasha. I feel like the lack of development is mostly due to the show being super rushed and not being able to spend time on these things. Had they had more time, I felt they could’ve done a lot more with these characters.
AnimationIf there’s one thing Sunrise knows how to do, it’s visual presentation. Ever since the 90’s, they’ve usually done an excellent job at making their shows look great, and this show is no exception. There are certain points in the show where the animation looks absolutely stunning, like the episode were Inuyasha fights Sesshomaru in the Underworld, which was a highlight episode for me due to the animation alone. The only complaint I have about the animation is that they sometime use clips from the original series in flashbacks, and it comes off as sort of jarring at points. But that’s just a minor nitpick, and it doesn’t stop the show from looking fantastic.
SoundThe music used in this series is pretty much the same music that was used in the original series. If you liked that score, then you’ll like this. If you didn’t, then you’ll probably hate it. I personally didn’t mind the music at all in the original series, so I had no problem with it here. The show’s opening is pretty good, although I kinda got sick of hearing it after a while. The ending themes are also pretty nice to listen to. Honestly, there’s nothing really much to say about the music. It’s there, and it’s just fine with me. Now for the more interesting part of this section, the voice acting. They got most everyone back from the original series, except for a few people. Most notably, they had to replace the English VAs for Kagome and Sesshomaru. As expected, this caused an uproar in the fanbase, as is the case with most major re-casts. Personally, I don’t have much of a problem with the new voices. Sure, they’re not as good as the old ones, but I feel that they did a decent job portraying their respective characters. I can certainly see why some people don’t like the new voices, but personally, it doesn’t really bother me all that much, and I feel like they could’ve done much worse with the dub (aside from Kohaku's lazy voice work).
Final ThoughtsTo be honest, the show wasn’t as good as I was hoping it would be. The fact that the show was so rushed really ruined a lot of what the show had going for it. It’s a real shame, because if the show had a lot more time and care put into the final product, it could’ve been a much better show. Despite me being largely negative towards the show, I’m glad the series finally got to have a conclusion. Inuyasha has always had a special place in my heart, and seeing it have a proper conclusion has pleased the soft-spot I have for the series, despite it not being the final arc I wanted.
Final Score: 5/10Alternate Reccomendations: The Vision of Escaflowne, Yona of the Dawn

I prefer Inuyasha The Final Act because it follows closely the storyline of manga. The Final Act should've been done earlier, because events of it add a lot depth in the characters. Sad scenes and tragedy but also the joyful ending!
