Magical☆Shopping Arcade Abenobashi
アベノ橋魔法☆商店街Childhood friends Arumi and Sasshi are residents of the Abenobashi commercial district in Abeno-ku, Osaka. After an accident, they find themselves transported to an alternate sword and sorcery world. Their attempt to get back to reality finds them traversing a series of nonsensical worlds built on science fiction, war, fantasy, dating sim games and American movies. Each alternate Abenobashi is a surreal manifestation of Sasshi's otaku interests, populated by analogs of the protagonist's relatives and acquaintances and a blue-haired stranger known as Eutus. Abenobashi Mahou☆Shoutengai
Abenobashi is about the two childhood friends Arumi and Sasshi. One day it is decided that Arumis family is gonna move to Hokkaido which shocks Sasshi. A few days after the announcement strange incidents start to happen and Arumi and Sasshi get sucked into alternate worlds and have to try and figure out a way home. The alternate worlds all have a theme and is in some way making a reference to popular culture at the time of the making of the show. Especially the many references to american movies are fun to see when you recognize them.
The art is the traditional Gainax art and reminded me a lot of FLCL. Even though the show is somewhat old the art is really good with a lot of details and fast paced movements.
The sound is mostly comprised of the dialogue and the voice actors make a excellent job in making the characters feel real. The music that is in the show mostly is in the background and only helps set the mood. It does a good enough job doing that but nothing really great.
Arumi and Sasshi are the main characters and they get really fleshed out. You get to know the motivation behind their actions and understand them well. The background cast is comprised of some really uniqie characters that help create the weirdness of the show and are also really entertaining in there own right.
Abenobashi is for those who want a longer more fleshed out FLCL. It has the same feel to it and the character design and art is also visually similar. It is a fun energetic ride that will take you through many moments of laughter but is also able to convey sadness.

Great fun, with lots of awesome animation (the drawing style will change from one episode to the next). While the general premise does at first only lends itself to some good slapstick and gags, we do get a bit of a deeper plot later, so it has the best of two worlds. I'd recommend it heartily!

Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi is probably one of my first shows, and boy has it resonated as a gem. Each episode follows Sasshi and Arumi, two childhood friends who are transported to various realities which are based off of popular genres of animation and video games (with references to some of Gainax' very own series), each of them parodies in themselves.
Also, it's seinen, and there's some pretty heavy stuff discussed such as suicide and murder, so don't let the jokey-joke goofiness get you too comfortable. Don't get me wrong, it's lighthearted and humorous all the way through but towards the end it becomes pretty serious, going into such topics as murder and suicide. For the sake of the show, I won't ruin any of the surprises, but just know that this show is much more than it presents itself to be.
