Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches

山田くんと7人の魔女

When Ryuu Yamada entered high school, he wanted to turn over a new leaf and lead a productive school life. That's why he chose to attend Suzaku High, where no one would know of his violent delinquent reputation. However, much to Ryuu's dismay, he is soon bored; now a second year, Ryuu has reverted to his old ways—lazy with abysmal grades and always getting into fights. One day, back from yet another office visit, Ryuu encounters Urara Shiraishi, a beautiful honors student. A misstep causes them both to tumble down the stairs, ending in an accidental kiss! The pair discover they can switch bodies with a kiss: an ability which will prove to be both convenient and troublesome. Learning of their new power, Toranosuke Miyamura, a student council officer and the single member of the Supernatural Studies Club, recruits them for the club. Soon joined by Miyabi Itou, an eccentric interested in all things supernatural, the group unearths the legend of the Seven Witches of Suzaku High, seven female students who have obtained different powers activated by a kiss. The Supernatural Studies Club embarks on its first quest: to find the identities of all the witches. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

This show was a lot less shallow and more enjoyable than I thought it would be. A nice little love story.

[Spoiler-free]
I was first drawn in by the pretty animation, and stayed for the overall amusement.

Note: This is all my personal opinion. It’s totally fine if you think differently about this anime and I’m not here to force my opinion onto anyone.

Story - 7/10
Here, the anime could’ve done better. But who am I to judge them, since they decided to cram over what I think was over 100 manga chapters into just twelve episodes? The overall plot was enjoyable, but I feel that the anime was rushed. Sometimes, they even worked an entire manga chapter into maybe a few seconds of screentime. Again, they only had twelve episodes and I understand that, but it took away some scenes that I feel like make it even more entertaining. Other than that, you were still able to follow well what was happening and the story is satisfying for anyone interested in a short but entertaining anime to watch. It mostly encompasses the magic and “adventure” genre, seeing as the main character is constantly trying to find out the mysteries of the seven witches.

Animation - 9/10
First of all, the animators have my props for creating one of the (in my opinion) most aesthetically pleasing animation currently available. Though not perfect, I’m simply just drawn to the pretty colors and comforting atmosphere of this anime. The aforementioned comforting atmosphere of the anime stuck with me throughout all twelve episodes.

Sound - 10/10
Again, sound here is nothing short of amazing. I’ve downloaded both the opening and ending of this anime and still occasionally listen to it. The opening and ending fit the anime in general and give you a good idea of what genre the anime is part of, though in the main it seems to be positive, with a small degree of mystery. (As most of the secrets are only revealed in the last couple of episodes.)

As for the voice acting, it wasn’t anything worth writing home about. The voice actors used, however, did sound exactly how I imagined they’d sound while I read the manga, which I commend the voice actors for, providing a fully faithful adaptation of the dialogue, even if the rushed chapters of the overall anime didn’t.

Characters - 8.5/10
Simply put, I loved most characters. I had mixed feelings about each one when they were first introduced. All antagonists, the student council, at the beginning, but I slowly came to like them. I found none of the characters particularly annoying, with the exception of the protagonist, Yamada, later on. His actions become somewhat predictable to a point where it just becomes a bit bland to me. I believe this highly varies from person to person, though. A lot of girls seem to have a thing for him and- I’m not the biggest fan of harems, so this was a little disconcerting for me. My favorite character by far here is Nene Odagiri. I’m usually not into stuck-up girls such as her, but the considerable amount of development her character receives makes her more than memorable, in my eyes. Not only Nene, but a number of others as well.

Overall Enjoyment - 8/10
Like said, it’s a fun little anime if you want something you can finish quickly and still enjoy. As much as I feel that it’s rushed, I do hope for a season 2 of this, especially if the second season is less hurried than the first. Definitely give this a watch if you particularly like supernatural, school and/or comedy anime.

Overall:
The show is well done in the sense that the story was well written, enough to have a satisfying end with quite a cute twist.

Animation:The animation is really well done but sometimes the characters feel a little bit robotic or the expressions are out of place.

Plot:
The plot is really fun for most of the episodes with quite a bit of ecchi scenes, nothing explicit tho! There is a good mix of serious thoughts that directly relate to the witch's power and the struggles they face becoming quite evident that the writers thought out how to interconnect the multiple characters and their backstories.
I do feel like it would be really fun to have some kind of "alternative ending" in which the main character ends up with a harem!

Special Consideration:Altho the plot revolves around the power of body-switching it does not actually touch a "gender bender" subject the way one would expect from such a classification. Meaning that there is no questioning of gender by the MC or desire for him to switch genders.
Depending on your point of view that could be something for the better or worse, that is up to you to decide.
The way the MC actually reacts to the body-swapping experience was quite fun as i think that would be the most natural thing one would do if such a situation would come to pass for the average person!
The show does have quite a diverse romantic plot involving all genders and the way that the author portrayed was quite natural giving this anime a cheerful feeling.

I hope you enjoy it as much as i did!

A great school anime. Predictable with the plot but still really enjoyable.

tyson89 - 2015-06-29 22:32:58

Adapted from Yoshikawa Miki's Yamada-kun to 7-nin no Majo, the anime is an excellently put together piece of work. I've been following the original work since that first arc and am so glad that the anime I've been so excited about is finally here and is, best of all, actually good.

Story
I never really know how to treat anime that come from manga in terms of story, because most of it comes from the manga anyway. I usually end up judging the story as a whole, manga and all. Yamada is a faithful adaptation of the source material that only ever changes small details to help the pace of the plot. With only 12 episodes, the first arc was told wonderfully. I liked most of the slight changes they made, but there were one or two that I would have wanted the original way. The actual plot itself is absolutely brilliant through and through. It's a refreshing high school story starring a delinquent as the lead, as is seen to be a recurring theme with Yoshikawa's works. It's amusing, it's funny, and, most of all, it's heart wrenching in just the right places. This is my third time experiencing the twists and turns and it's just as vivid as it was back then.
Animation
Liden Films brings Yamada to life with vibrant, colorful animation that's just a pleasure to watch. The fun of the original manga really shines through and is reflected in the high quality animation work. It's smooth and wonderfully captures the energy of the characters. The opening, especially, had me enjoying watching an opening for the first time in a while. The picture book filter/aesthetic was really a nice touch, given the nature of the story.
Sound
I really liked the opening song as well. I wasn't as fond of the ending, but it was still nice. Overall, the music was pretty solid, with music that wasn't outstanding, but did the job in terms of playing up the emotions of the scenes. However, the voice acting is really where this anime shines. The characters are absolutely brought to life by the voices and this was a wonderful show of that. The voice actors especially shined in the range they bring that really emphasizes the body swapping aspect of the show. That doesn't count as a spoiler, it's in the summary.
Character
The characters are quirky, fun, and relatively trope free, which is a nice change of pace. I mean trope free in that they're free from the archetypes that many characters get jammed into and never escape. They all have an adequate amount of complexity, but in a story like this, it's really more about how much fun they are to watch. Their interactions never cease to be amusing and, near the end, you'll at least be feeling some kind of emotion as the story runs its course.
Enjoyment
I had a wonderful time watching Yamada considering I've been waiting on it for a couple of years now. I hope that another season eventually comes down the pipe, because it was so nice having an adaptation of a manga that was so faithful and so good. There's probably not enough out there right now for another, but I can't wait for when there is. In the meantime, though, I'd really like to see an anime of Yankee-kun to Megane-chan, which is just as wacky and fun, with less magic.
Overall
It's a lovely piece that will be sure to entertain you through its duration and never overstays its welcome. The plot is fun at times and sad at times, but never fails to be anything but great as you watch the hijinks of Yamada and crew. I really recommend going to read the manga, as well as reading Yankee-kun to Megane-chan.

This anime was a weird one.. but it was really really GREAT.. It had a nice good ending but was also abit sad. The story is actually great.. dunno how they got the idea but its creative. Must watch!

wolff.marcel - 2015-06-29 02:53:06

What a great show. Every episode I watched, I waited for it to go Kyo-Ani and have the story slowly weaken, the plot to drag, the main character to do something so cheesy that it essentially sets him back two episodes.

None of that happened (less a little cheese). The plot flowed smoothly, there was a little rushing of the story here and there but when you want to wrap it up in a season, sometimes you gotta do that.

And the OP is magical. I am not one to watch the OP more than once, but this OP made me watch over and over again. What a delight.

kennedy77 - 2015-06-28 19:18:00

Short and sweet, should you watch it? Yes. Especially if you have a soft spot for romance/comedies.
                                         ***Beware of slight spoilers***

If you're lazy and don't want to listen to me, read the sentences in bold. Now, as usual, starting off with the story

Story: 9/10
So we start off with our man character, Ryu Yamada. He is a Second Year (Junior by U.S. standards) delinquent in a prestigious private school. He fits the "high school delinquent character" to a tee. While he's getting roasted by one of his teachers, in comes in a honor student. She has the good moral character, good grades (and good looks) that a star student should have. Now stop. You think you know exactly where this is going. "From that picture I assume that he's going to fall on top of her, they're going to accidently kiss, and some shit is gonna happen and they fall in love." Yes. And no. Both magnified tenfold. As the description tells you, they switch bodies. Now what. Well, what happens afterwards if for you to find out yourself, I'm not gonna spoil it (go watch it).
This story is surprisingly really well executed. The development, the twists and turns, the stunning realizations - beautifully done.

Animation 8/10
The animation of this series was good, and up to par with most other anime of this time. However I couldn't really find something that stood out or "popped" but there wasn't anything wrong with it. It was good but nothing special.

Sound 10/10
The opening. This is my favorite opening of the season. The soundtrack for the anime was also amazing. And last but not least, the ED was also nice. The voice acting was also fitting. The sounds and such of this anime are gorgeous.

Character 10/10
As the anime's title states, it is about Yamada-kun and the 7 witches. But there's more than just him and the witches of course. The Supernatural Studies Club, the student council and others are very important, and must I say prominent in the show. Yamada, Urara, Miyamura are the main characters for the most part, and the rest fall in line. The development of the characters and their transitions are phenomenal. Most of the 7 witches require Yamada to set those changes into motion, successfully bringing about character development as well as taking roles in the plot progression. It becomes sort of like a harem, but not. It's similar to SAO for you [DATA EXPUNGED]. Most of the girls have a thing for the MC, but the MC falls in love with the main heroine. Except in this circumstance, he stays in love with her. I don't know why I used that as a comparison, but it fits. Except this is a real romance.

Enjoyment: 10/10 - Overall 9.4/10
I enjoyed this anime thoroughly. Initially I only watched the OVA and ONA and didn't think much of it. I just thought, oh boy. Some generic slice of life school anime labeled as a Rom-Com only because they use kissing as a method to switch bodies. I was basically going into this one blind. But roughly about the 5th episode or so, I really really started liking it. It quickly moved up the ranks in my top anime of the season, and came out on top. This is going into my favorites, let me tell you that.

Last kiss was really cute but kinda disappointing, so here's this one.

Just saying...that i was reading the manga for both shokugeki-no-souma and yamada-kun-to-7-nin-no-majo and while the manga of shokugeki-no-souma is at +/- 118 chap, the manga from yamada-kun-to-7-nin-no-majo is at 138... and still yamada-kun-to-7-nin-no-majo has 12 anime episode and shokugeki-no-souma  has 24... second season? or even A THIRD SEASON COMING OUT?????
