Not your average romance. It's not all happy and cutesy. It's real and real ppl go through real hard situations, some ppl have a real hard time getting through them. These characters are awesome. Takeuchi. My heart goes out to him. He's probably my top choice for most awesome best friend of protagonist. Definitely recommend

Even as a fan of Shoujo anime, Bokura ga Ita was, at many times, infuriating to watch.

The story starts the same way as any typical shoujo. Main girl Nanami develops a crush on popular guy Yano. They hate each other at first but eventually start dating. Yano has a tragic past that Nanami must come to terms with. Actually, at first the show is quite enjoyable. Nanami is very cute and her relationship with Yano is sweet and believable. Both characters make selfish decisions and have complicated emotions, and they have to learn how to understand that about each other.  

But by the second half, I was fed up. Every character in this show has someone they can't let go of. Yano can't get over his first girlfriend, Nana (I don't think anyone even brings up the fact that Nanami looks just like her and has nearly the same name, which is really a pretty terrifying basis for their relationship!) When Nanami and Yano split, neither one of them can get over each other, even though Nanami knows she should. This would be fine if it was limited to the main couple, but the story has two supporting cast members, Takeuchi and Yuri, who are in love with Nanami and Yano respectively. Even though both are repeatedly rejected, they refuse to give up on their love interests. By the end of the show I was thinking Takeuchi and Yuri should hook up so they could spend the rest of their lives commiserating about how they people they love are a couple. And heck, even Nana apparently wasn't over her ex-boyfriend before she died, which causes Yano even more anguish.  

Speaking of Yuri, she is a disgusting character with absolutely no redeeming qualities, and her whole existence seems to be to cause drama with Yano. But the characters in the show constantly bully her or, at best, treat her like she's to be pitied for being ugly, quiet and having a dead sister. And it's really not cool.  

Now, having characters devoted to each other for all eternity is a pretty typical romance plot, and it would almost be acceptable except that through the second half of the story, everyone is miserable. And it's so frustrating to watch knowing that if these guys would just MOVE ON, they could be happy. Takeuchi tries to by dating a girl he meets, but decides it won't work out because he didn't have a crush on her first. You're gonna have a rough time dating in adulthood, buddy.  

Bokura ga Ita had a great start but quickly became frustrating for the sake of drama. If that's your thing, you might enjoy it! But for me it was just too much.

This one gives the impression of being another simple high school romance anime when you read a summary of the story.It's after the first few episodes that you realize it's much deeper and complicated than you originally thought.

And what romance it is. The beauty of this series is that it just feels like it’s about a real couple, and throughout the series, they explore all of the common aspects of being a couple: rivalry, understanding and compromising for each other, truthfulness, breaking up and saying goodbye, but the common theme for this series is the fact that love can turn sane people into a bunch of inconsistent idiots; the contrast between common sense and your own feelings, and the 24 episodes do an excellent job of exploring said themes in-depth.

I think this is one of the best shoujo manga/anime because it actually gives you the real life struggle of a couple,well there are only a few manga/anime that I can name that really gives off that feeling which is Bokura Ga Ita,NANA, 5 CM per second, and honey and clover.

If you like sad romance anime then please give bokura ga ita a chance and please also read the manga for the continuation.

My review will be different. I might save you some time:The first half of this series (up through episode 12) was simply wonderful, hovering between 8/10 and 9/10 for me. I don't even mind what happened on episode 12 — I thought the girl and boy were both right and both acted right.But.Between episode 13 and the end, it kept drawing out, and out... and out. It became a true shoujo soap drama, where one character picks on the tiniest little things and makes the relationship unnecessarily difficult, while the other character can't get away from the past. It was slow and tiresome. I just didn't enjoy this second half very much, but it was still watchable, and you will probably be able to stick through it. Unfortunately, the ending is nothing really worth waiting for anyway.The main girl, Nanami, plays it so perfectly in the first half though. The way she talks... if I hadn't seen the second half, she'd easily be one of my favorite characters. Animation: low-budget mediocrity galore with mostly static frames, but they do try to be artistic with it (e.g. all the bubbly framing around key scenes, or how they occasionally blank out one eye for effect). Pacing: slower than average. Music: gently compliments every mood, insert songs never feel unwanted or out of place, and they cycle through a remarkable number of ending themes (9!). All in all, I definitely recommend at least starting Bokura ga Ita, and if the front half leaves enough of an impact, perhaps try a bit of the back half for yourself. It's certainly not awful, but just nowhere near as alluring as the front's wonderfully carefree slice of life, and far more irritating. And it may leave a bad aftertaste.P.S. — If you do watch the entire thing, be sure to check the manga for the last episode since they leave out a key line after the anime's final scene. (It's in the last few pages of Chapter 31. You'll know it when you see it, but feel free to ask me if you're uncertain.) And if you're up for it, there are 39 more chapters to Bokura ga Ita after this.
