Emma: A Victorian Romance Season Two

英國戀物語エマ ~メルダース編~

In the faraway village of Haworth, a new chapter in Emma's life has begun. Now employed by the wealthy Molders family, Emma has resolved to put the past behind her. She'll have to adjust to a new house, a charming (but eccentric) new mistress, and a host of fellow servants, some with buried pasts of their own. Meanwhile, back in London, William is doing his best to uphold his father's wishes as the Jones family heir, but try as he might, he can't forget Emma. Yet, whenever he feels at his worst, Eleanor is always there to comfort him with a warm, shy smile. Could the answer to his broken heart be right before his eyes? (Source: RightStuf)

If Downton Abbey and Pride and Prejudice had an anime baby, it would be this show. Picking up where the first season left off, season two finds Emma living with the Molders family and trying to forget about old flame William.

Season two introduces some new characters into the mix. One of the most prominent is Hans, a butler at the Molders household who is a love interest for Emma. There are several other characters introduced, and they are all welcome additions to the mix.

One of the most amazing things about this show is the attention to detail. Present in Kaoru Mori's original manga, this show goes to great lengths to make sure everything is historically accurate and true to the period. This also benefits the story immensely and makes this show a real treat for anglophiles.

Animation is solid. Nothing spectacular, but no real glaring issues. Mori's original art style has been faithfully reproduced, so any issues with character designs that a viewer may have were also present in the original work. Music is also quite lovely. No J-Pop or anything of that nature. Just period-appropriate music that adds to the authenticity of the work.

Ultimately, if you enjoyed the first series, there is nothing to dislike here. The story is concluded very satisfyingly. Plenty of romance, unrequited love, and period-appropriate struggles are present. If this show were live action, it wouldn't at all surprise me to see it airing on the BBC or Masterpiece Classic. It is a real treat, just be sure to check out season one if you haven't seen this one yet.
