Hayate the Combat Butler is a self-aware, self-referential anime in a similar vein to Gintama. Most aspects of it aren't done as well as Gintama, but overall I think that expecting them to be would be unfair and unrealistic.
Hayate is an excellent comedy with more than its fair share of gags, brick jokes, and slapstick. Characters are generic but fulfill their roles well, and serve to further the hilarity that runs throughout the entire series. My only regret about Hayate is that it suffers some pretty serious quality degradation over time. The sequels, and even the later episodes of the first season can't measure up to Hayate's strong start. Nonetheless, 7.5/10.

Hayate no Gotoku is by far my most favored anime on the planet. The authors use of "Breaking the forth wall" is utter genius. The story begins when Hayate Ayasaki, an unlucky teen left with a huge debt and sold by his parents to the Japanese mafia, Attempts to kidnap a rich thirteen year old for ransom. However, he somehow ends up saving her life, the girl offers him a job to be her butler at her mansion after he "apparently" confesses his love to her.
The Characters are to be cherished and only get better as the series goes onward. Even as a comedy, Hayate no Gotoku has a great story throughout it following the relationship of the unlucky butler and his tsundere mistress.

Hayate isn't too lucky. He comes from a poor family who, despite bad finance, enjoy spending.Hayate's parents leave him with their debts and dissapear.Hayate rescues a little girl named Nagi, who happens to be rich.As a repayment, Nagi pays off Hayate's debts, as a repayment to Nagi, Hayate becomes her butler. This story started off flawless (first ep).Good, easy to follow storyline.However...Looking forward to seeing a series full of adventures....Oh no...The series turns hareem, and a number of token bipolar anime girls show up (the female lead is one also). No real character development.Dispite it's flaws, it's a decent series that's worth the watch if you're into mild comedy.
