In Search of the Lost Future

失われた未来を求めて

The astronomy club consists of Sou Akiyama, Kaori Sasaki, Airi Hasekura, Eitarou Osafune, and Nagisa Hanamiya. Though they say they spend their time studying the stars, certain members of the club have also been studying Sou. This potential high school romance gets sidetracked as an increasingly bizarre series of events start happening in the soon-to-be-old school building. Ushinawareta Mirai wo Motomete finds the Astronomy Club of Uchihama Academy dealing with the appearances of ghosts, quelling civil unrest among different student clubs, coping with tragic accidents, and investigating an odd, relic-like cube. But perhaps the biggest task of all is unraveling the circumstances surrounding the sudden appearance of a transfer student named Yui.

(Adapted from my MAL review)

"I'll see you again tomorrow, right?"

Ushinawareta Mirai wo Motomete was an anime I have wanted to watch ever since I knew of its existence before it even started airing. I don't know how, but it just seemed to captivate me. Thus, I waited to watch this adaptation of the eroge of the same name, and at last, my waiting paid off. What I got was a perfect example of how you should not determine whether an anime's good or not just from the animation.

Ushinawareta Mirai wo Motomete is basically about a high school boy named Sou Akiyama, who is pretty much the only one in his school club, the Astronomy Club, who actually cares about astronomy. The Astronomy Club is told by the student council to calm the uneasiness among the students before the cultural festival, as things such as ghost sightings have been occurring as of late. Suddenly, Sou finds a white-haired girl, naked and unconscious. This girl's name is Yui Furukawa, and she seems to be interested in joining the Astronomy Club.

Now, I can't really describe the story without giving you spoilers, so let me make it simple enough for you; it's beautiful. It's the kind of story that grips you from episode 1, making you want to know more about what happens. Some of it may cause questions to arise, but those questions are answered in the most heartfelt way. Ushinawareta Mirai wo Motomete has one of the best stories I've seen in an anime for a while.

I can't say the same about the art, though. Feel, the studio behind this anime, has intentionally given it the most low-quality animation I have ever seen. Thus, sometimes, I can't bear to watch Ushinawareta Mirai wo Motomete. Like I said earlier, though, you can't judge an anime by its art, like how you can't judge a book by its cover. As such, I should probably say that the animation is the only thing wrong with this anime. (The art from the visual novel, though, is beautiful.)

Besides the plot, Ushinawareta Mirai wo Motomete has an OP ("Le jour" by Satomi Sato) and an ED ("Ashita Mata Aeru yo ne" by Hatsumi Takada and Akane Tomonaga) that I could listen to all day and not be bored! The voice actors also fit the character they're voicing well. I may have said that a thousand times, but I can't help that I mean it. This anime also has a plethora of great characters that actually seem to have even a smudge of personality. I also loved the bond between Sou and Yui.

Overall, despite its awful artwork, Ushinawareta Mirai wo Motomete is a good anime. If you're in the mood for a great story, great music, and nice characters, this is the one. It's too bad this isn't really a popular anime. Hopefully, more people will be appreciating this more in the future!

A Visual Novel turned anime, this is a basic Harem/Tragic story. It drops you right in the middle of a situation and doesn't really explain anything at first. You'll feel really confused on and off throughout the anime.

If crappily explained sci-fi stories aren't for you, then this likely wont be either. There's very little ecchi for it being rated 17+ so don't expect much in the way of boobs or butts. However, if you can get into the plot its actually pretty entertaining. The ending doesn't disappoint either!
