I like to point something out right at the beginning: The shounen-ai tag is highly misleading.
It's completely up to the viewer if he/she wants to see the relationship between the two main characters as romantic, I for one would rather go with brotherly love because that's more plausible in the context of the story.
So don't get repulsed by this tag, it means absolutely nothing.

Robotica * Robotics is not a casual watch, it's a good example of the artistic possibility of animation, not just because of its art-style but the story as well.

Art
One of the strong points of this OVA is the art, which is unique and unusually brightly coloured.
It's animated at some points throughout the story, sometimes just a frozen image accompanied by voice acting, and it often seems more like a comic rather than an Anime.
The art per se is raw, not much work has been put into unnecessary details but instead into the use of colour and its influence on the characters and overall feeling of the story.
I have to admit that it can be confusing at times, especially because of the text bubbles that are popping up out of nowhere, but it shouldn't be much of a problem for most people.
So everyone who expects smooth animations, or overly detailed character design, will be disappointed.

Story
It's about human emotions and the incapability to understand and describe them as well as the influence of what we do to each other and how it affects not only how we see and experience ourselves but the world and the people around us.
Haru is thinking about the sunny side of life, he's a happy-go-lucky character even after everything he had to go through. Happiness, love, positive emotions are what drives him and that's why he lacks understanding of the negative sides.
Natsu on the other hand is stuck in the shadows, he's convinced that robots can't feel anything and he's slowly drowned by his past filled with abandonment and pain. He is only familiar with the negative side of emotions and has no understanding of the positive aspects.
We have two extremes with nothing in between.
Emotions aren't just good or bad, you can't have one without the other, but we are often drawn to a specific side influenced by our past experiences and personal reaction to them.

The message at the end is easy but we often tend to forget it:
Love doesn't need to be understood or described, it's there against all odds and it comes in a great variety. It's not just something shared between lovers, it's the time spend with our family and the warm hand of someone we love.

And that there's beautyeven in the face of tragedy.

If you want something more heavy and character driven, short and unique with a very sad touch, then give it a try.
