Time of Eve

イヴの時間

The movie version is the complete version of the story. It includes all the OVAs and completely new scenes giving details on the background story of some characters. Sometime in future Japan, androids have been involved in every aspect of people's lives. One day, upon checking his android's behavioral log, Rikuo, a student, noticed his android's returning times have been odd recently. With his friend Masaki, they found out the place where his android, Sammy, have been visiting: a small cafe called Eve no Jikan where androids and human are not seen as different. Upon talking with the "people" in the cafe and discovering more of Sammy's behavior, Rikuo changed his view about androids and treat them as friends rather than tools. At the same time, elsewhere in Japan, the Ethics committee is trying to impose policies to reduce the involvement and use of androids in society. (Source: ANN)

A very enjoyable anime! Definitely worth a 5/5 for me. Beautiful storyline and hope they continue the series/film as it ended with a to be continued storyline. Makes you wonder in the future if this would ever become reality.

Eve no Jikan or Time of Eve in English is a six episode ONA (Original Net Animation) series. It aired from August 2008 to September 2009 over the internet. A theatrical release then came a year later in 2010 that ran for 108 minutes. This first series was labelled as the first season and the second season has yet to be announced. Now that the formalities are over, Eve no Jikan is a spunky title that entails a setting in the not to distant future. I heard it's probably Japan. It basically tells the tale of where androids have become common use among Human households and now people are questioning whether or not these androids should be recognized as their own person. A funny tale to tell because it gives an interesting look at what our own future could be like, I suppose It'd be pretty dismal cause we can't even deal with having differentiating dress sizes. It focuses on one particular house hold where teenager Rikuo Sakisaka checks his android's actions and notices a strange entry in her locations. Buckle up, charge your android cellphone and enjoy the time of EVE.

Overview

Time of Eve has several cups of coffee to offer you:

  • For those who treasure calming and soothing experiences, EVE is slow paced.
  • The cast show a different aspect of their society; a thin line between android and human.
  • A soundtrack to accompany your calm and peaceful afternoon literature intake.
  • For the customer who values questioning ethics and morals, then EVE has you covered.
Story

For most of the story, Time of Eve takes place within the cafe only known as Time of Eve. The coffee shop is one of the few places that do not allow discrimination between humans and androids. It exists only to serve those who wishes to have a good time away from the fingers that point at them on a daily basis, be it human or android. During your stay in the cafe, you are to uphold the main rule put in place, do not discriminate. All androids display a status ring above their heads but within the cafe, this ring is removed and it's very hard to know whether a person is truly a human or an android. This is where our protagonist comes in, like most humans around him, he takes his android for granted. From what you can expect, people are lazy and have their androids do all their work for them, you know the kind of stuff you'd expect. Rikuo notices a strange entry on his android, Sammy and decides to investigate thus stumbling upon the cafe, the Time of Eve.

Time of Eve is not for someone who relishes in fast paced plots, this is slow, almost excruciatingly so to some people. Whenever you consider watching this, you should note that this show could be for those who wants to sit back, relax and watch the story unfold, to see how people react and take on the actions of their new helpers. Perhaps, you'd prefer to have a good ole cup of java to perfectly immerse yourself in this, I know I did. Upon finishing it, I wondered if that was the end of the story but I was glad to find out that this set of releases were dubbed as "Season One" so hope for more lies on the horizon. Normally, shows like these would bore the heck out of you, in fact chances are you'd be bored out of your mind if you don't know what you're getting yourself into. There is no romance sub plot, there is comedy but not like most anime around. Where the entertainment in Time of Eve lies is where the conflict between humans and androids is shown and how our protagonist Rikuo comes to terms with his android and ultimately accepting her independence.

Animation and Sound

The animation in Time of Eve was acceptable for the entire duration of the film. It was produced by Studio Rikka and DIRECTIONS, Inc. The quality of the movie stayed consistent during its course and I'd have to say I was quite pleased with how it looked. This is definitely a movie that should be watched with HD treatment. It isn't something completely out of the water but it would be able to make you put a smile on your face. One thing that did stand out for this movie was its use of the camera. The way the scenes are shown and is pulled off is definitely not something you'd see in typical anime. If I remember correctly, I was disoriented at first but soon adjusted to the change. You'll see what I mean when you watch it.

As I've taken the time to say above, the music in Time of Eve all have soothing, calm and slow properties to it. For the most part I enjoyed it, an example of such music is the one I embedded at the top of the video. I'd say that's the most iconic piece of the title and you'd see why. It's the type of music I'd play in my store if I owned a cafe. Here's the ending theme, I liked it:

The voices actors did a top notch job at voicing those characters so I never felt difficulty connecting with what they presented to me. By the way, are you having the Time of Eve yet or do I have to introduce the staff now?

Characters

For this section I'll briefly describe three key persons in Time of Eve and what I thought of the supporting cast members. First up, is the Time of Eve newcomer and aspiring protagonist Sakisaka Rikuo. He's a high school student and very talented with the piano. He's one of those people who uses androids for most of his actions and this is noted out in the story so he has little or no empathy when it comes to treating androids like they're their own person. His interactions with his android, Sammy is almost painful for me especially when I noticed that these androids do in fact have minds of their own. He didn't seem whiny or wimpy, he's more level headed and able to think things through. This is something that allows him to think differently from the way society wants him to think, so it's almost as if the anime puts you in his shoes as he makes his way from person with an android solely for his deeds to person who acknowledges her choices and actions.

Next on the staff list comes Sakisaka's best friend Masakazu Masaki. His involvement within the story is an interesting one because it just so happens that someone close to him is very important when it comes to robot and human ethics. This mainly means that Masaki has very differing views when it comes to androids and humans, so this plays off in the story well. I for one welcomed this because without a little conflict in the brew, this cup of coffee would have been a tad tasteless.

The android whose actions we mainly focus on is Sammy. Her appearance is that of a young woman and behaves accordingly. She is one of the characters I could not get enough of, sadly enough you won't see much of her onscreen but more on that when you get to watch it like you're supposed to. Her existence is one that connects the viewer to what she has to go through and see her go from robotic systematic presence to human-like conscience. It truly was a joy and I hope I get to see more.

Now when it comes to the supporting cast, I'd like to think they existed just for the viewer to ask simple questions. What is love between androids and humans like? Does an android express a vast range of expressions like we humans? Can us as humans stop pointing fingers at each other and respect others for who we are? What if you had an android for a father figure, would it be the same? These all came to mind and when they are introduced, I believe you will too. The characters in Time of Eve was definitely a strong point of the series. While we only got to see a taste of who these people really are, I hope in the years to come, that the story only continues. It's almost time for shop to close up so let's clean up.

Conclusion

Time of Eve is a rather peculiar title for anime watchers, it wasn't mind blowing nor was it mediocre but for what it brings to the table, it was an energizing watch. They serve a hot take on some issues that we like to argue on a daily basis. It can only get hotter from here as this is only season one, your first cup on a breezy evening so I'm hoping in the near future, you come by for another cup. So you've had your cup of coffee, our special Eve blend. I hope you enjoyed your stay and hope to visit soon. Wait, before you go, here's all the fan service you're going to get from me, I hope you had the Time of Eve.

Eve no Jikan is a story about the lives of the customers who visit a café where you are not allowed to disciminate against robots/androids to the point that when your in this café you have no idea who is human and who is an android. The film asks many questions concerning whether androids really should be treated as mere things or as people, and you get to meet people who are extremists for both sides of the point. The setting is stated as 'probably Japan' and is set sometime in the near future, i like how they took a few current inventions that you see today such as cameras and keyboards and beefed them up a little without going overboard Star Trek style. The art for the show is very good, each character is drawn and designed nicely, they do use quite a bit of CG but they use it well and i does not stand out and adds to the feel of the story, i really enjoyed the movement of the camera, at points it spins on the spot and we get to see the cafe in its 360 glory, there is the occasional zoom to the other side of the room seemlessly and we are even treated to a hand held feel when it show the view point from the eyes of a character.Voice actors did their job spledidly, though it is not surprising as they are 'big name' actors, the music was really nice, theres some decent piano tunes and the rest really highlighted the atmosphere and fitted the sci-fi setting, the ending tune played with the credits is the best part and is some beautifully. The characters play a huge role for this series, the cafe has patrons of all types, the two main guys are similar to each other but are different enough at the same time and have to deal with their own issues throughout, there is also an enegetic girl, a nice waitress who treats everybody equal, a couple of love birds, a mysterious guy guy who references Blade Runner and an old man with a young child who thinks she's a cat, they all play a part and have a small amount of drama and issues to understand and deal with. The genres given for this movie are sci-fi and slice-a-life and Eve no Jikan gives off a great feel of atmosphere of both the genres and the movie is something that can be easily enjoyed with its calmness. As a whole there are a few points that make you wish it was a full fledged television series, just to answer a few questions that were left and to see deeper into these characters lives, that is how good this is that it makes you wish i wouldn't end.
