This is a prequel story to the Free! anime that follows Makoto and Haru as they enter junior high and become a part of a swimming club. It circles the issue of whether they really love swimming (spoiler: they do) and whether they really like competing (spoiler: they do) but doesn't really get much deeper than that. There is a lot of internal examination from the characters who don't really have problems except for the angst they make. Still, there are plenty of cameos from the boys we love from the anime series (including Rin, Rei, Nagisa and Sousuke) and lots of the bromantic drama that looks like actual romance. Altogether, the plot is predictable but still an enjoyable watch for the show's main audience.
