Punch Line

パンチライン

A bus has been hijacked by armed robbers, but not to worry—vigilante fighter Strange Juice is on the scene. With a Bam, Pow, and Crack, she sends those baddies flying right out of the bus! All except the mastermind, unfortunately. To get past him, she’ll need some help from… a panty-powered superhero!? Yuuta Iridatsu is a pretty typical high school kid. Except for his tendency to faint every time he sees a girl’s panties, of course. After his encounter with Strange Juice, his soul gets separated from his body. But for Yuuta, this is more of a blessing than anything else, as it enables him to wander around unseen, looking up skirts and making trouble as much as he wants. For some reason, though, every time Yuuta gets too excited and faints, an asteroid hits the Earth. What gives!? Yuuta figures he’s got no choice. He has to find out why his love of panties threatens to destroy the world. And probably stop it. Right after this one last panty shot!

I Love This Anime For it's comedy and story. When you start off the story takes a while to get rolling but after this 6 episode of development and many panty shoots you get the next 6 episodes of pure story and even more panty shoots.
Other then that it has a great ending which get's you asking for more.

Animation: Animation was great i don't normally pay attention to this but i did see they had great design for characters, objects and mecha. Plus The Amazing Opening which is absolute Crazy

Sound: Most Sounds are re-used like the metal bash sound which you may recognise from the Valve's Source Games like Half-Life. And That Uberfing Power-up Sound which sounds like the level up sound from Borderlands. The OST was really cheerful and has a a lot of electronic in it.

Character: The Characters are Spectacle with a strong bond with the other house members and strong development to make you care about them they was a lot of plot and "plot" ;)

Enjoyment: Like i Said it starts off slow but it does get better and the comedy in this is great the anime gets more serious near the end but it still keeps you interested.

Overall i'm overwelmed by its ending and think is a must watch for those brave enough to watch girls have fun and show there panties xD

"If he sees underwear, humanity will be destroyed!?" With a description like that many people avoided this because they thought it was gonna be just another ecchi trash show. And were they wrong. Punchline may have ecchi elements but it manages to parody other ecchishows excellently creating a funny and moving story.
The story premise may sound ridiculous but as the story goes on more and more get explained and suddenly you find yourself watching interesting characters in a weird and strange world that at least I got invested in a lot. The first episode is actionpacked and is followed by three more episodes focusing more on humour. This is one of the things that threw people off while watching it, believing that was all the show had to offer. From episode 5 and onwards the show enters the best part of the story. It is a basic story of the main character trying to save the world through solving mysteries on the surface but as you watch more and more you start to see how everything is connected and minor plotpoints you might have overlooked could be of great importance to the story. It is a smart and funny story to sum it up.
Another thing that makes this show great is the many multifasceted and enjoyable characters. Each and every character felt important and no one was there "just because". No character fit neatly into tropes and they were all genuinely interesting and relatable. Yuuta unlike many main characters actually has some confidence and manages to solve things on his own instead of relying on deus ex machina solutions or overwhelming power to push the story forward. Chiranosuke, the cat spirit, is honestly one of the most entertaining characters I have seen in recent years. The girls all have distinct personalities and act according to how their characters have been built up and not according to what the plot wants. To not spoil I will just say that every girl is more than what they look like at first.
The art is one of the main draws of Punchline. It is both clean and colourful and manages a level of brightness that is just right. Each character design is unique and interesting to look at. They all have small personal details on themself and in their rooms that serves to reinforce who they are as a character even more. The art overall fits the show well and manages to be absurd when the show is absurd and feel really grounded when the show enters the more emotional moments.
Sound is great too. Action scenes have a fast paced music that increases excitement and makes the fight entertaining to watch. The more emotional moments has a soundtrack that reinforces the importance of the scenes even more and fits them perfectly. Voice actors did a good job overall and some standout performances managed to bring even more personality to great characters. The opening and ending were both memorable and especially the OP will be stuck in your brain for a long time. It is that catchy and one of the rare shows where I listen to the OP in every episode.
This is a show I like a lot but I understand that it is not for everyone. All I ask is that if you decide to watch the show, give it to episode 5-6 before deciding what you think about it. It suffers from the start but manages to create a great experience if you stick with it long enough.

Didn't like it.
Thought it was gonna be hentai.

Punchline is flawed, however it does succeed in pushing the boundaries and expectations of what has been conceptualized by many anime fans and studios as the norm.

Punchline utilizes eechi as a means of reaching an end, while the finale is at most underwhelming; it does act as a decent plot device to push forward the unexpectedly complex story. The use of eechi in this show is prominent only in the first half, as it's used to progress the MC's characteristics and way of thinking. While also developing the cast along the way, using similar methods of utilizing eechi as a plot device as the show practically revolves around panties early on. While the fan-service is used to be a means of progressing a above average story, it does not seem too intrusive to the plot in the early stages as it's done cleverly and it's apparent that something bigger is happening behind the scenes.

While the show does succeed in breaking some stereotypes and stigmas that most eechi shows inherit, it still lacks in narrative. The story is above average and an appropriate amount of foreshadowing is used to hint at what's to come. This however is pulled off rather poorly at times, while it was redeemed in the end with many elements linking back to the start. This does not redeem the poor methodology used when delivering that information to the viewer. In a way, much of it seems forced and unnatural.

To summarize, the show would benefit from further planning of events and how to foreshadow what is to come. The only other problem with the series in terms of narrative is characterization, no characters in the series feel that relatable. The show does break many tropes in this regard, however the characters are only developed superficially with no in-depth insight into their inner workings or motivations.

Conclusively, the show is very good for an eechi as it breaks many stereotypes and expectations. It however lacks an deep narrative, this can be justified however because of it's lack of episodes and style of story telling to a degree.

Overall it is recommended if you want to watch an eechi with many elements that come together to create an overall enjoyable experience.

Final Score   -   6.5 / 10   -   (ABOVE AVERAGE  -  RECOMMENDED)

Punch Line is a show that plays dumb for five episodes and then spends the next five giving well thought out and logical reasons to its dumb behaviour.

I loved every episode, for the most part. I have a slight issue with the finale, im questioning the motives of our MC, but to be honest this is a tiny blip on a stupidly fun show.

Punch Line will probably be my show of Spring 2015. Also probably the best OP of 2015 over all. I have listen to it countless times at this point.

dorothy49 - 2015-06-26 05:47:30

It's been a while since I've reviewed anything, so let's get right into the swing of things. When boiled down to its summary, Punchline seems so base and lame. Honestly, the plot sounds like it's a thinly veiled excuse for fanservice and nothing else. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was much more. Created by Studio MAPPA, it's a nice piece that isn't defined by its panty shots. Well. Sort of.

Story
The story is way better than the plot summary lets on. In an almost Madoka-esque bait and switch, the panties are just a draw to lead you into a false sense of security. In reality, the plot is actually pretty well written and executed, if a little outlandish. There's not really a cohesive setting, but it's one of those moments where you just want to suspend your disbelief. It makes you wonder if that's what they were going for, or if it just sort of happened. I'm going to leave Studio Mappa the benefit of the doubt.

Animation
Studio MAPPA is headed by the former founder of Studio Madhouse, meaning you know it has to be quality. The animation is fluid and dynamic and incredibly pleasing to watch to the point that many people watched it just for the animation before being turned off by the panty shots. I loved watching the opening with the 360 degree views of the rooms, thinking about how this kind of thing is super recent. On top of that, the ending seems to be animated by the same person who did the animation for this song.

Sound
To be honest, I don't really remember much of the background tracks. I don't know if that means it's good at staying out of the way or not good for not being memorable enough. The only song I really remember is the nursery rhyme that one of the characters keeps singing, though that's really more for plot related reasons than musical reasons. I'm not a music guy, so I can't really say much about it either way.

Character
You know, I can never tell if this category is for characters or character, as in the attributes of a show that make it unique. I take it to mean the former. The characters are surprisingly well written, especially considering, at first glance, the show looks like pandering trash. Honestly, if the plot isn't all that coherent/realistic, the characters more than make up for that. They're definitely one of the strongest points of the show. It's an example of a show that really shows the importance of working together without blatantly shouting it in the face of the antagonist as is the case in many shounen manga/anime. The main character is more than meets the eye, and all the residents of Kourai House have complications that make them interesting in different ways. I honestly did feel some attachments to the characters by the end, and some of the episodes really had me feeling those feels.

Enjoyment

Honestly, I had an absolute blast watching Punchline. I came in at about the episode 6 mark and watched pretty much all of them in one go. And then I had to wait 6 more weeks for the last couple episodes to air. It's fun to watch for the eyes and the plot and characters are stimulating enough to keep going without realizing how much time is passing. It's not complicated enough that you need to think too hard about it, so it's also possible to just turn your brain and watch it.

Overall

I enjoyed my time watching Punchline. It's probably something that deserves another watch through, all in one go, though it does a pretty good job of keeping the episode to episode mark coherent enough to watch week to week. It's a solid piece of work that is definitely worth watching, even if you're turned off the panty shots. Don't worry about those. They never get any worse and there aren't nearly as many of them as a series that does it unironically.

jacobs.lenna - 2015-06-17 13:25:52

It's not one of those fucking awful ecchi without a plot. No, Punchline is full of plot twist, there is an amazing and coherent story, plus the characters are great, each of them ! Must watch !

I'm going to leave what I said at the halfway mark of this anime here just to show the difference between how I felt then and after finishing this anime.

To put it frank, this is one of the best shows I have ever come across in my time watching anime. I've seen dozens, and I will see dozens more to come; but this anime certainly pulverized all of my suspicions and worries over what it could turn into (a fan service mess). I will be honest, beyond this review and a possible copy and paste of it to other sites, I will never talk about this show. Why? Simple:

This anime is a hidden gem. It is one where the people that didn't hope for it to be better dropped it somewhere before the 6th episode where things picked up fast, and then ones who continued on watching to finish one of the best anime around. Simple as that. There's something nice about having an anime you know to be good but not actually be popular.

Either way:

The story would only be lacking if the first few episodes stood alone. But they don't. This anime has undoubtedly one of the best tightly knitted ending to it, in that everything gets answered, and even the few things not explicitly explained, are implicit enough for the imagination to piece together what it will to connect the dots.

Animation was really the only bad part of this anime, and even so, there were points where it was outstanding. Keep in mid that this statement is not to be confused with my opinion of the art style (which I think is very unique and awesome).

Sound isn't memorable for me, but some of the music, especially the ED, were quite so. Not much else to talk about.

Characters were really fun to watch and see as they developed into (Spoiler), especially after seeing the first arc of the series; knowing that if the second arc didn't succeed, it'd be a repeat. Don't think too much on that, if you watch the anime, it'll make perfect sense. Overall, I loved Yuta and the other girls in the complex, their dynamic personalities making everything all the more lively. My only complaint is this one particular antagonist that just.... really makes no sense, to be honest....

All in all, this is an anime to remember should you watch it. It's not a simple fanservice galore anime that just shoves everything into your face. It's mind bending, intense, and in every way in shape and form an anime to never forget. Feels? Ya got it. Romance? Ya got it. Greatness? Have some more.

While this series is not over, I feel as though my two cents should be put in for people who may be reluctant as they see the synopsis of this anime, regarding as a fan service galore anime, and nothing more. Well, it's something more.

I came into the series thinking I could just watch it for the giggles and the upcoming fan service. I didn't think I might just have to reach out for a tissue.

Yuta, the main character, is whisked out of his own body, and meets a white cat spirit who tells him a way to get back into his own body. In the process of trying to find himself, he accidentally sees panties as he goes through the apartment, and the world does explode. *fin*

Then the ever-so-amazing white cat decides to tell him that he can just reverse time, and he does so. And the usual charade ensues until a few episodes in and something happens that turns the entire anime on its head.

I honestly hope that this anime ends well, and if it does, this will definitely be a more memorable anime among the general population because of its unconventional modus operandi of using panties to drive an intriguing story forward.

Wow! What a surprise! I thought Punch Line was going to be a one-trick pony show focused on fan service--but it's so much more--it's time travel and intriguing household of female characters, awesome time travel, actual character death, a ghost who needs cinnamon to move things, super suits, beautiful animation, and world needing saving from an asteroid. If you dropped Punch Line, I would highly recommend you giving it another try, as each episode is even better than the last. It's very enjoyable, it's somehow touching, and very engrossing! I can't believe this has climbed into my top five shows of the Spring Season, but that's because it's not really a silly story--it's unique and thrilling and just gosh darn fun. And thank God, the fan service does simmer way down after the third episode!
