Corpse Party: Tortured Souls
コープスパーティー Tortured Souls -暴虐された魂の呪叫-Nine students gather in their high school at night to bid farewell to a friend. As is customary among many high school students, they perform a sort of ritual for good luck using small paper charms shaped like dolls. However, the students do not realize that these charms are connected to Heavenly Host Academy—an elementary school that was destroyed years ago after a series of gruesome murders took place, a school that rests under the foundation of their very own Kisaragi Academy. Now, trapped in an alternate dimension with vengeful ghosts of the past, the students must work together to escape—or join the spirits of the damned forever. A feast for mystery fanatics, gore-hounds, and horror fans alike, Corpse Party: Tortured Souls - Bougyakusareta Tamashii no Jukyou shows a sobering look at redemption, sacrifice, and how the past is always right behind, sometimes a little too close for comfort. There is not really a story. It’s more just for gore and violence which was excellent.

This Anime has an interesting story...at the third episode the story isn't clear but don't worry in the fourth episode they be successful to explain all the story in one episode and it's so amazing...the characters don't have an interesting depth in the story but hey! It's the story the pivot of this anime and for me it's did very well (sorry for some errors in this review but i'm not British and i don't know english very well....i hope that this review can be understand by all)

An intriguing anime that hooks you right in with the horror held in the school. The game is also just as good if not better, they did a fantastic job.

Warning!
I really enjoyed this show as I am a huge fan of gore and horror of movies/TV shows. If these tropes turn you off. I would recommend not reading this review or watching this show. Also I watched the anime before completing the game, so my review will be written in the perspective of one who wasn't familiar with the source material. Also I will try and rebuke a few problems others had with the show or at least explain them.
Corpse Party: Tortured Souls is a horror OVA series based on the the events of the first game in the video game series Corpse Party. The OVA stays very true to the source material (a mix of the "true" route mixed in with a few bad endings to the chapters of the game) and sticks very much to the gruesome aspects of the deaths of each character.
TL, DR:
Story: Great story. Faithful to source material. Not the true ending! Not enough time to flush everything out in 4 eps so pacing is rushed at times.
Animation: gore has never looked so good!
Sound: Good not great. Sets mood very well and only adds to the visuals.
Character: Not enough time to flush out characters. Watch prequel to get a little more back story, but not that much more.
Enjoyment: I'm a sadist who likes gory slasher films. I liked the show a lot!
Story:
Corpse Party is set in a modern day high school called Kisaragi Academy. One rainy night, after celebrating their school's culture festival, a group of students, are telling ghost stories when their class representative decides to perform a charm called "Sachiko Ever After", which would allow them to remain friends for eternity as one of the students has to transfer schools. A sudden earthquake transports them to an alternate dimension to a place called Heavenly Host Elementary School. Heavenly Host was an elementary school that was torn down following the murders and disappearances of several of its staff and students. Kisaragi Academy was built over Heavenly Host's grounds once the old elementary school was torn down. The students have to figure out a way to escape, however they soon figure out that the school is haunted by the of the school's murdered children. The students try to figure out the truth and mystery of the cursed school, in order to find their way home and survive the other shadowy forces that haunt the school.
The plot of the the show was both the best and worst part of the series. I give props for the writers of the show fitting in as much as they could into 4 eps. However it's still only 80 minutes to explore a 10 hour game. In order to really understand what is going on you have to pay real close attention to the events and what's being said in the show. This can be a slight headache for most people as paying attention to the plot isn't what most viewers come to watch a show like corpse party for. The pacing of the show could've been a bit better. A fairly decent section of the main plot is skipped over (though that didn't really bug me as as it would've been repeating a similar situation over and over again) and the end felt a little to quick. Of course that is a byproduct of being a 4 ep OVA series, but I think the show would be much better if it was a 5 episode OVA series so the ending could be paced better, or if the show was 13 episodes long so the skipped middle part could be explored and the ending would be given enough time to really flush things out.
Source Material score: 9-9.5
Anime Story score: 7 (I would recommend you look up a synopsis of the game's story (and the bad endings since some appear) after watching. Things will make much more sense and the story of OVA's will be better understood and enjoyable)
Animation:
The animation of the show is very well done. The character models can kinda confuse you as some of the girls look very similar, however it is usually not to hard to distinguish which character is doing what. The best part of the show is the murder scenes. The level of detail and gore in each one is very very disturbing. You will be WTF'ing a lot during the show and cringing during every death/torture scene. Think a more descriptive and dark higurashi were you can see everything that happens to each victim. Also guts, lots of guts. The backgrounds are very similar (as the show takes place in one location), however they are very atmospheric and set a very good mood for the show. This isn't a negative as it shows how trapped and hopeless the characters are.
All in all a 9 on animation.
Sound:
All around decent atmosphere. Nothing especially epic, but nothing really bad. Everything fit the scenes that they were used and never detracted from the show. Don't speak Japanese so I can't say much about the VA's. To me they sounded good enough, but idk.
Would say good not great. 8
Characters:
I would recommend you watch the mini-prequal Corpse Party Missing Footage in order to get a better sense of the characters and their relationship between one another. Because this is only a 4 Ep show with a large cast it is hard to really get to know the characters all that well. I found only a few to be really enjoyable (and they died more towards the beginning). I feel like if the show was longer you could really flush out their back story's more and get to know them better.
6 out of 10. Potential, but show was too short to capitalize on it.
Enjoyment:
As I said at the beginning of this review, I really enjoyed the show. The combination of gore and the dark atmosphere of the show was very fun to watch visually. The plot was interesting and kept me intrigued about what was happening even if the characters weren't given enough development. Also I really love horror/slasher movies and this genre isn't really explored much in anime.
9 out of 10 for enjoyment (cuz i'm a sadistic lover of gore!)

Now .. let's give this a second try.
You blink once, you blink another time. It's pitch dark. The air smells putrid. The atmosphere feels claustrophobic. You notice that you can't move, seems like you're hurt. You try to wiggle your fingers around but all you feel is a thick liquid seeping out, but from where? Is it what you think it is?
You try one more time to see if you recognize anything and you see
Such a welcoming face, don't you think? Welcome to my Corpse Party Tortured Souls review where I tell you all about how a couple kids life got twisted upside down and I'd like to take a minute and tell you what its like so sit right there and I'll show you how a corpse party became the last hurrah of a school called Heavenly Host Elementary.
Corpse Party Tortured Souls is Original Video Animation (OVA) and an anime adaptation of a horror game which came out on the PC-9801 in 1996 then rereleased in 2010 for the PC and PSP. Now it's important for you to know what you're getting yourselves in so if you're the faint of heart type, then you probably shouldn't be watching Corpse Party.
Here's some music to entertain yourself with while reading this, enjoy *chuckle*
OverviewSince this is an adaptation of a video game, many references to the game will be made. That said, this should be spoiler free. I wouldn't want to ruin potential feels being crushed, now would I?
Corpse Party Tortured Souls..
- It's a faithful adaptation of the source material
- It's soundtrack and sound effects are easily fright inducing. It kept many of the background music from the game as well.
- Voice actors from the game return to their roles and will not disappoint.
- Animation quality and Art style is great. The art style is adapted to anime format well.
- It will keep you on your toes, fans of the game and new persons.
- It incorporates its own twists to make it feel fresh but I assure you, all in true Corpse Party fashion.
Everyone has that group of people in their life that they would never want to part from even if it means their own life. A simple charm should do the trick, your mom always did tell you superstition was a bunch of poppycock. That was the beginning of misfortunes for our group of characters which I will later introduce. They find themselves smack dab in the ruins of a school that existed 30-40 years ago. They're all separated and here's a twist on the story, they're all in different dimensions within the same wall. A tall order for anyone looking to explain to a student experiencing the total shock of their location. Such is the curse of the Heavenly Host Elementary School. Many have ended up in here and all have died, but what's worse, they can never leave these walls, their souls will remain here in torment forever.
That's about what the story offers to you and you'll just have to catch on as the show goes on. It's a scary situation alright. Since I played the game I know whats going on and who these people are but I'm afraid persons now coming into the ovas for the experience should not expect little too much on the exposition side of things? It's because they're going to... y'know die. Maybe, I don't know.
On the subject of the game, the adaptation had to leave out a few scenes here and there and well it didn't suffer for it. The viewer is able to understand the story so it didn't leave out there. Some people might be disappointed for the exclusion of certain scenes but I assure you, it's still a great adaptation.
Since this is Corpse Party, it's important to know that this does not pull any punches. If it had the chance, it will pull you and your whole family down into purgatory and make sure that you eat one another just to survive. It's the nature of the show so expect some feels to get crushed.
Animation & SoundHaving fun with the animated gifs yet? Yea, I am too. Now the animation quality here is nothing short of a good job. Every drip of blood and piece of skin slit open is excellently animated. It's not everyday you get to see a girl with half her head gone and we get the tasty treat of seeing what inside half a head looks like. I think a horror anime is doing well when it forces the viewer to cringe as much as possible at all the stuff going on and boy, did I cringe. The style they used for this adaptation translates over 1 for 1 from the style they had in the game. The characters all had their own separate portraits whenever they spoke and the special scene pictures that tended to pop up. It all looks more or less like that so I was pleased. As much as I hate to say it, Corpse Party could have benefited with two more OVA episodes in order to cover more essential details from the source. Regardless, it was a smooth four episode OVA and it didn't falter once. It wasn't anything stellar or mind blowing like Bakemonogatari or Fate/Zero but it did its job well.
The sound design is very much eerie and panic inducing. It utilized most of the background music from the game. Speaking of which, are you enjoying my piano solo straight from the ghostly corridors of Heavenly Host? If you plan on playing the game, make sure find the piano and investigate it. The voice actors have returned and done a good job. No one felt out of place and it kept the corpse party feeling. No horror work is done without blood curdling screams and that's all there as well.
Top Row: Ms Yui Shishido, Yoshiki Kishinuma, Satoshi Mochida
Bottom Row: Naomi Nakashima, Seiko Shinohara, Mayu Suzumoto, Ayumi Shinozaki, Yuka Mochida
Photographer: Sakutaro Morishige
CharactersAhhhh, such happier times for this batch of students. It's hard to look at such characters in this setting and not think of them as lambs for the slaughter. That's what they are essentially and Tortured Souls will pull no punches. The OVA only has four episodes so it must kick things up a notch as quick as possible. It's left up to you the viewer to see what type of person this is. You don't need to know much, just a little about who they are you know? Those of you who played the games would know more than most but here's a brief introduction of each of these characters so you know who they are.
First to the chopping block is Satoshi Mochida, the level headed and all rounded male of the group. He's a typical fare for anime characters. Next lamb for the slaughter is his cute little sister, Yuka Mochida. She fits the bill for the "Onii-chan, I love you" and gives you moe induced headaches. In steps Yoshiki Kishinuma, he's the delinquent type and who likes to think everything is a drag. Both males get things done however. The teacher is Ms Yui, she's our sweetheart who loves her students dearly but the spirits of Heavenly Host begs to differ. Naomi Nakashima is our cute and popular girl for this group, she's also level headed. It wouldn't be a party if there wasn't someone who's the life of the party right? That's where Naomi's best friend Seiko Shinohara comes in. She's everything you expect of a fun and spontaneous teenage girl. Mayu Suzumoto is the innocent and quiet girl who is moving with her parents soon. Ayumi Shinozaki is the class rep and is an intelligent girl. She just so happens to like all things weird and occult. Not that anything might have to do with that school right? The one you're not seeing is Sakutaro Morishige, he's the mandatory nerdy looking guy. There's one more key character I'd like to introduce, Sachiko Shinozaki.
She's so kawaii. Anyways, Sachiko is as much a mystery as the school that imprisons everyone. She, along with three other ghost children terrorizes all who enters and trap them in the school forever. Now, for her characterization, it's easy to imagine her as a psychopath. That's all you need to do, not a yandere cause there is nothing or no one for her to "dere" with so to speak. At least, that's what she comes off as when you see her coming with scissors. I wonder what's the real reason for her actions..
As I said before Sachiko is not the only entity in the school, she's accompanied by three ghost children all who has their history with the heavenly host elementary when they were living. Other characters are there too where they will play the role given. Now a common feature of the Heavenly Host Elementary is to slowly drive you bat shit crazy, no joke. It's easy to see someones fall into madness upon entering these halls and our batch of characters are subject to the same treatment. It adds to the horror element and I'm glad they weren't afraid to get dirty.
Corpse Party Tortured Souls is a great adaption to a great game. From what I could have told, it stuck to its roots and added in their own little twists. Some gamers may have seen already but I'm sure something will surprise you even so. I could tell the animators only wanted to give viewers a "good" experience and I'd say they did well. It may not be the best thing since I can't believe it's not butter but it makes for a great spread on toast. It's really not for the faint of heart if you haven't noticed by the gifs by now but I implore anyone who wants to give it a chance, please do. To those who seems interested enough in both watching the OVAs then playing the game, do so as soon as possible. I promise you, you will not be disappointed.
I give Corpse Party: Tortured Souls, a 7 out of 10.
Quick question, If you were to experience this and be imprisoned but you miraculously made it out, would you feel comfortable to know the friends you had no longer exists in neither physical or other memories?
Just something to think on, have a nice night.
