Fairy Tail

フェアリーテイル

A superficial but kind-hearted celestial mage, Lucy Heartfilia, joins a famous wizarding guild in Magnolia Town called Fairy Tail, where the members use their powers to earn rewards in exchange for fulfilling quests. Here she befriends an impetuous but faithful dragon-slayer wizard, Natsu Dragneel, who is scouring the land for his missing father. The two form a bond with fellow mages Erza Scarlet and Gray Fullbuster, and together they tackle daunting challenges, taking on several powerful allies and foes along the way. Created by Hiro Mashima, Fairy Tail is an action-packed adventure that follows Lucy and her friends as they learn the value of friendship, forgiveness and family. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

A pretty good action based anime with good plot, interesting characters and amazing soundtracks.

Even though this is my favorite anime of all time, I am not going to say it doesn't have major flaws. I know there are a lot of things wrong with it but it has some strong points.

Story- For people who don't like long shows, this is not for you. There are 175 episodes and there is a plan to continue the anime after the manga gets ahead a little more. Basically the show follows Natsu, Lucy, Erza and Gray who are all part of the magic guild Fairy Tail. It dives into each of their pasts and many of the secondary character's pasts as well. The show is very painfully broken up into arcs, and I say painfully because once one ends, that's pretty much it. There is hardly any reference to what happened in the arc once its over, save for the first few arcs that are about backstory and get mentioned sometimes. They do bring back characters from past arcs to progress the current arc, once even bringing back almost the exact same group of villains, just more powered up than before, for a later arc. One good point is that there are barely any filler episodes, only 1 or rarely 2 in between arcs. The arcs get more interesting as the story goes on, not just because everyone is getting more powerful (somehow? you never see them training so???), but because they just get more complex, especially more towards the end. I don't think it's the kind of storyline everyone would like, because of it's length, but I still rate it about a 6.

Animation- The first thing anyone is going to notice about this show is the sheer amount of fan service. It's not the most extreme fan service I've ever seen, in fact I think it's a little mellow, but it is overabundant of that mellowness. Other than that, the colors are bright and I'd say the actual animation itself if consistently above average, but great. The fight scenes are pretty good, I do think there are much more better action scene in primarily fighting shows, but still good nonetheless. I love the look of the different kinds of magic. They can make it very beautiful when they want to and then good-looking the rest of the time. I also rate this a 6.

Sound- This soundtrack is the best anime soundtrack I've ever heard. Every opening (except one) is brilliant, though some stand out more than others. There are limited endings that are memorable, but a few are also quite good. The tracks used in the background are beautiful. My favorite are the main theme and dragon-slayer theme. I absolutely love everything about the music of this show. Besides a few endings, and the one opening I can't stand, it's awesome. Then there is dub versus sub. I did start out with the dub and being a die hard Haberkorn fan, I had no problems with it. Then came season 2 and there was no more dubbed episodes, so moving on to sub was my only choice. I tend to like whatever version I hear first, but this was a veeeeeeeeeery close match. I love Todd. The rest of the English cast is good. Then they release season 2 in English. There went all my respect for the dub. Wendy and her cat, Carla, got messed up so bad, as well as so many new characters, that I cringed the entire time. I like Brittney Karbowski, but not as Wendy. She just sounds so wrong for the character, and OMG the poor cat. Carla sounds like an old prissy woman. Shes like five years old and calls Wendy 'child' all the time. Wendy's like seven years older than her, good God! I can understand writers wanting to put their own touch on the show but this casting for season two destroyed the pretty good dub they had going. I am sub all the way. I love Todd as Natsu, I love Tetsuya Kakihara as Natsu, so there's no major sacrifice switching to the sub when I'm not watching season 1. Rating is 7.

Characters- I have to say the main thing that got me hooked on this show is the characters. Natsu is a fire dragon slayer looking for his lost dragon parent Igneel, who went missing seven years ago. He has a very sever case of motion sickness where he can't even be carried by other people. His best friend is a flying cat named Happy and no one knows how old he is. He is by far my most favorite anime character of any anime EVER! Obviously not everyone will agree, since he can be loud and an air head which for some reason bothers other people. I call it having an outgoing personality. Lucy, Gray and Erza are the other main cast, until season two roles around and Wendy and Carla join the group. Lucy is supposedly the main character of this show even though she does nothing except get kidnapped, get rescued, find gate keys, and be used for fan service. Sometimes they let her fight. I think she could've been a better fighter but she always barely gets by all her fights. Gray is okay. I'm not the biggest fan but he has a good backstory and most of the time is strong in a fight. Erza is bipolar in this show. Sometimes she's over the top serious, sometimes she's over the top silly, they call her the strongest female wizard in Fairy Tail but she hardly ever gets any big fights, and when she does, they're usually a struggle for her. Her magic is cool but 95% of the time is mainly used for fan service. Wendy is...basically a clumsy little girl...with a flying talking cat. It's like turn Natsu into a girl, completely flip his personality and you've got Wendy. Since she's a dragon slayer too they are basically complete opposites from each other. The rest of the supporting cast are pretty awesome too. There's a lot of them and I can't think of any I don't like, be it after the show ended. There were times when secondary characters received my hate, but I got over it as time went on. Overall I'd say the characters get an 8.

Enjoyment- Like I said before, this is my favorite show. I can't not enjoy myself when I watch it. I feel sad that people pass it by because it's one of those really long series, but it was totally worth it and I can't wait for it to come back again. Rate 10

GUYS, PLEASE DONT GET BUTTHURT OVER MY REVIEW, IT'S JUST MY PERSONAL OPINION AND PURE FACT. LET'S ALL GET ALONG BECAUSE WE ALL NAKAMAS. No but seriously, don't get butthurt over my review guys. If you have something to counter it with, or have something to add, don't come with blind fanboy/fangirl shit and attempt to burn me or bash me alright? I accept civil interaction from anyone, however blind fanning I won't respond to. Also, FINISH IT FIRST. Thanks.

Alright, its time to do a review of Fairy Tail! An anime that is mainly circulated around children who run countless Fairy Tail and Shounen fan groups, and it really should just stay among them. So how did you come to watch Fairy Tail? Well I started watching it because I was just plain depressed after watching too many tragedy anime in a row. I didn't actually know anything about it, I just clicked on it, and started watching. Unless this was the way you got to watch Fairy Tail, or because you were plain interested after looking at the genres, I find no excuse at all for you to have watched it. If you had watched it because you are one of these little children from one of these groups, then I suggest you Alt + F4, open another browser, and continue rewatching it.

Fairy Tail is a bland Shounen anime, and one of the worst ever. The plot is almost nonexistent, the characters are bland and boring and get development that they really didn't need, the battle scenes are bullshit. Even if you liked Shounen anime, you would still be able to find overwhelming faults with Fairy Tail. Even the battle scenes are rubbish. It's like they took a bunch of stills, threw them together using the earthquake effect and put some epic music behind it. So if you are looking for an anime that is based on magic, or based on superpowers, watch The Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere, or The Legend of the Legendary Heroes, or for God's sake something else. Fairy Tail will be nothing but a disappointment.

Story

So, what is the story in Fairy Tail? Could someone please tell me? Is it about Natsu looking for his dragon dad? Is it about Fairy Tails wacky escapades, fighting baddies, but not killing them (EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE CUT BY SWORDS, LOGIC FTW)? Is it about Zeref and he's evil, whatever he does? No one will ever know. The whole damn anime just feels like its a filler. Though of course, since the actual fillers in the anime are so bad, you can tell them apart from the non fillers. Even though the number of fillers aren't high compared to the non fillers, the non fillers are of course not that good themselves. They portray a lot more "relevant" events yes, but why do they seem relevant? Bigger battles. More "my friends give me power" crap. More this, more that. Oh allow me to elaborate on each "tough" battle: they are losing, then shouting "My friends give me power!", then Natsu eats some flames or shit, then they beat the crap out of the enemy randomly, they win, aftermath. That's it. Ok ok, not all the battles were stills + earthquake effect, but most of them were. And here I am going on and on about battles in the story section. Why? BECAUSE THERE ISN'T MUCH TO TALK ABOUT HERE.

Animation

Well, like I was talking about earlier, the battles have some action in it, but mostly stills + earthquake effect. Basically, the animation ain't great either. There's fanservice of course, that's one of Fairy Tail's main selling points I think. Two of the main females, Lucy and Erza have big breasts. Oh did I fail to mention that at the beginning of the anime, Lucy is trying to seduce this old man into lowering the price for a Magic key? Dammit, I should've put this under the Story section :/

Sound

Probably the best thing about Fairy Tail, is it's music. The voice acting was pretty good I guess, but since the characters were irritating I didn't take much notice to it. The sound effects sounded tinny during the battle scenes though.

Characters

Oh perhaps the section that I was dreading the most when I started writing this review. The characters are annoying and non-sensical. Like I've been saying, in the battles, they just shout out "I fight for my friends!" and they amazingly triumph over their enemies. Are they only fighting for their friends? How about the world? Or the environment? Or I don't know. How about getting power from training? Their "training" is total bullshit. Whenever they are about to start training, something random happens and they don't end up doing it, but some sort of last minute/day thing happens and they magically gain power from that. Now lets talk about how irritating the characters are. First Natsu, the main male lead (I think). He's obnoxious. All he does is shout and do retarded things when he's not fighting, and he's always picking a fight with someone. He is even more hot headed and non-sensical than other Shounen protagonists out there. At least they train to get their powers. Oh, and he's a dragon slayer by the way. At the beginning of the anime, dragon slayers are some sort of mythical fighters, who were brought up and trained by dragons. Later on, dragon slayers just pop out of nowhere like they are the latest thing in style. You have the metal dragon slayer, Gajeel, the wind dragon slayer Wendy, you have the lightning 2nd generation dragon slayer Laxus, a poison 2nd gen dragon slayer Cobra. And later on, you have a 3RD GEN DRAGON SLAYER. I mean what are dragon slayers, fucking Pokemon? "Ash is now headed to Magnolia, to discover a new species of humanoid Pokemon, known as Dragon Slayers!". That doesn't sound too bad actually. Ok, back to the characters, you have the celestial mage Lucy, who keeps having a break down during every fight and seems to be extremely weak [[SPOILER]] until she get's Loke, then hardly uses him [[SPOILER END]]. Then we have Erza, the equip mage. She's good for fanservice. Oh yeah she's strong. The strongest mage in Fairy Tail. Until the strongest appears, Mystogan. Then the strongest Fairy Tail mage appears, Laxus. And then later on, the strongest appears, he's called Gildarts. Seriously, these contradictions just never end. I'm still waiting for the strongest mage in Fairy Tail appears. Next up, we have Gray, a stripper ice mage. He's strong. But not the strongest. Natsu and him have a rivalry. Because every anime team has a rivalry in it, right guys? There are plenty other characters to introduce, but I won't because they are unnecessary. If you watch Fairy Tail you'll meet them. But I will introduce just one more character, and that's the flying dragon cat Happy. At least he has a better sense of humour than the other characters. And he's a cat.

Enjoyment

You know what, unless you are a 9 year old kid or someone who has never watched a proper movie or anime or cartoon, and has never read a substantial manga or book in your life, I don't see how you could enjoy this. However, it is weirdly addictive. I mean, I maintained my views on Fairy Tail for a long time, but I rewatched it, and am in the process of rewatching it. I'd like to know what drug Masaomi put in this anime that makes me do this. I even watched all of the fillers. So if you have already watched Fairy Tail, uphold similar views to mine, and are rewatching it, I understand. We are all just being drugged my Masaomi. Its okay.

Overall

All in all, Fairy Tail is a shallow anime with a shallow plot and shallow characters. If you are any veteran of anime, or have watched at least 50 anime, or you can tell a good plot from a horrible one, I advise you to stay away from this anime. There is nothing in it that is worth 155 episodes. Only the openings. So go search on YT for the openings or something and that's it. Don't get impressed by the fighting scenes in them though, cause they are nothing like that in the anime.

Fairy Tail ~ Another battle shounen anime to join the glorious world of anime. Adapted from the manga written by Hiro Mashima of the same name.

Now before you continue reading I must warn you that if you haven't seen all the episodes or are a huge fan that can't take criticism please refrain from reading this review. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
For those yet reading this review please keep an open mind about what you are going to read.
Initially I did enjoy fairy tail but in the end i started disliking the series. Here are a few reasons why

First of all the arcs are short. Which means there's a lot of things they can't do, bigger story, adventure or exploring, showing more of the side characters, etc. Every arc ends up boring to me and not memorable. The arc size also makes it so predictable. They have to go there without knowing much, be beaten by the enemies easily, get back up and run after them, beat them, a little talk afterwards, then go home.

The fillers, Fairy Tail has horrible fillers. Like the Daphne arc and the Starry Key filler arc. Just unbelievably bad. ABove that the filler arc is the second longest arc in the whole series. For those who might argue that fair tail has "less" fillers let me point out that FT has 38 filler episodes out of a total of 175. That's 21% filler, which is quite a lot.

Lisanna~They took a nice little cute backstory that helped multiple characters and ruined it. Brought her back without a good explanation and then afterwards nothing has changed. She barely talks to Natsu, she isn't important in the story. It was better when she was gone. Her being back and doing nothing basically ruins the whole flashback which was supposed to show how much she thought of Natsu, he thought of her, how Elfman decided to get stronger after losing her, Mirajane changed to be nicer, etc.

There's no training neither any foreshadowing. None of them really change. They were only going to train once but then Mashima said screw you, they're going to instead get powered up in 5 minutes. Natsu had a chance to grow with his powers near the beginning. He learned that he could use his flame to hold things or whatever. He forgot right after, lost a good chance and it hasn't showed up again yet.

Natsu's a horrible character. He's a main protagonist of the worst type, cocky yet can't prove it. Always runs ahead and gets beaten easily by the enemies, then he gets up and is able to beat the main boss of the arc. He needs a power up every fight or he loses, he sometimes has to get insulted until he's angry enough to beat him. Why the hell can't they give him a fire lacrima to use in a fight, he always has to get fire from some inconvenient ways. He even forgave Gajeel after he beat Lucy for like an hour, talked to him all nicely about dragons after their fight.

I couldn't even care about any of the characters.

Natsu's power is supposed to be unique. Yet, every arc they run into a new dragon slayer. And then they run into god slayers that's powers are even stronger than their dragon slayer counterparts. It's like he's making it up as he goes.

The comedy is annoying. Natsu's vehicle sickness got boring when it screwed up his chance to fight, which was by like the 8th episode. After that it's just been used way too much and has messed with his fighting multiple times since. Gray has to strip every god damn episode, they haven't thought of giving him a jumpsuit or whatever. Everyone elses comedy is boring. The only person who ever says something funny is Happy.

The action sucked, all the fights weren't interesting and of course were full of random powerups and bad comedy. The animation of the fights were mediocre and most fight end in Natsu consuming fire in some convenient way for the plot or getting help from his "nakama" and magically beating the enemy who seemed overpoweringly strong till now.

Story is nothing special. Nothing has really changed since the beginning.

Oh the time skip. I totally forgot about mentioning that. It was horrible, a 7 year skip. They didn't even let the mains train or whatever. They came back and were easily able to beat enemies that had almost beaten them 7 years ago and had been training the whole time they were gone.

All in all Fairy tail happens to be one of the worst battle shounens i have ever seen and this is coming from a guy who has seen a fair amount of shounen.
With this I end my rant. ( I wonder how much I'll be hated now, damn)

*THIS IS A REVIEW OF THE FIRST EPISODE*Lucy is a young wizard who wants to join the magic guild Fairy Tail. During her travels she meets Natsu, a fellow wizard, and his mascot pet Happy. Together they travel the world and get into lots of fights, presumably, in her quest to join Fairy Tail. This is, after all, a shonen series, so that's to be expected. The characters are standard fair for the genre: plucky, but slightly air-headed, girl, awesome fighter guy who's also an idiot, and a cute mascot pet that explains everything to the air-headed girl. Really nothing here to make them stand out from any of the other series from this genre.Outside of the CG from Bantorra, this is probably the cheapest and blandest animation I've seen in the Fall '09. It's flat, has a low framerate, and minimal movements. Background characters are embarrassingly undetailed. Spell effects are mainly just some CG plastered on the screen. It doesn't really help that everything Fairy Tail does has been done before and better by a lot of other shows like One Piece or Rave Master. The only real saving grace of the first episode is that it has a smattering of genuinely funny moments and some nice looking backgrounds in a few place.'Bland' is the word for this series. Art is bland, animation is bland, story is bland, characters are bland. Inoffensive, but tasteless.I guess if you really, really like these sorts of shows [shounen] then you might enjoy Fairy Tail, otherwise you can probably avoid it and not feel as though you're missing out on anything.

sawayn.amy - 2013-07-05 04:47:04

Now let me preference this by saying that I have only seen 8 episodes of Fairy Tail so far, so for all I know the show could get much better. Just look at this as first impressions for the show. Maybe in about a couple of months I might give Fairy Tail another try. Now with that said Fairy Tail is one of the most generic shonen anime I have ever watched.During the time of this review there is the BIG 3 in anime. They are shonen jump titles that have a large following not only in Japan but also in America; they are Bleach, One Piece and Naruto. As Bleach comes to its end and Naruto begins to slow on the breaks many shonen shows will try to take their place in the BIG 3. There is Hunter X Hunter (which I have never seen), Blue Exorcist (still, never seen), and Hajime no Ippo (you might notice a pattern now...) but the one show that has pretty much taken the spot of Bleach is Fairy Tail.So about a year ago I got into anime. I had always liked anime shows but never truly knew that they were anime. The shows I loved were Dragonball Z, One Piece and even Naruto. I still somewhat enjoy these shows today (okay maybe only One Piece) but because of this I figured walking into Fairy Tail would be a nice fun piece of cake. So one day I searched Fairy Tail on YouTube and Funimation had about 40 episodes up so I decided to watch 10 episodes to give the show a try. I then began to watch the first episode…..Now I remember asking myself multiple questions after the first episode. Like, were the main characters introduced at all interesting? I mean Lucy is a walking piece of cardboard pretty much with Natsu there to give the best Monkey D. Luffy impression he can do (seriously, no else notices how much he acts, talks and eats like Luffy?). Lucy has nothing going for her except tits but besides that all the female characters have this problem. In the big world of shonen anime males rule so Fairy Tail tries it's best to make Natsu and Grey look as cool as possible. There is also Erza but she is fan service that just happens to be strong. Also even though all the characters can use magic how come they only use one type of magic? I mean if you could use breath fire and summon other worldly beings you would be well off but learning other magic would not hurt right? The story seems to so far have the problem that Bleach had and that most bad shonen have and that is that there is no real long-term goal to achieve. With One Piece it is for Luffy to become King of the Pirates and for Naruto it is for Naruto to become head of the village. So far in Fairy Tail it is threat comes up and the group solves it. How can an over 130+ anime episode show have an overall plot this paper thin? It also has a major problem that I had with Naruto. In the first episode of Naruto, the title character becomes a ninja. The problem with this was that there was no internal struggle to become a ninja. Same with Lucy in Fairy Tail, she wants to become part of Fairy Tail and boom, first episode alone she joins. In doing this we don’t see how much the characters truly want to follow their dreams because they are practically handed them in the first episode alone. The show looked nice but nothing really caught my eyes, with characters looking good with nice looking scenery. The fights looked cool I guess but overall One Piece came out years earlier and looked much better than Fairy Tail. The opening for the first season was okay with no great animation with a generic as hell song to boot, but I enjoyed the ending only because I am a sucker for a catchy electronic tune. The overall music for the show I did not pay very much attention to, since it was just the same melody every time a fight began.By the end of the eight episodes I frankly had no interest in watching anymore of the anime. I just started watching Baccano! And never went back. I know that the show has a large following and I don’t want to offend any of its fans but come on guys! This is popular enough to be part of the BIG 3? A five year-old could have written the show! Recently though many fans of the show have been complaining of the repetitive nature of Fairy Tail so change could happen I doubt it. I would not tell anyone that considers themselves mature anime watchers to consider Fairy Tail, but for younger viewers getting into anime I guess it's an okay starting point.FINAL RATING: Mediocre- Fairy Tail brings nothing new to the table, but fans of shonen might like the bland but like-able characters.

annetta51 - 2013-07-05 00:04:10

This show is amazing in every aspect. Before you may think, no not everything is perfect. The only thing I must complain about is how slow a few of the arcs flow. It seems like not much happens in some of the episodes.

The OST's are awesome and match the mood of the arcs. The animation is annoying in the beginning but get alot better! The characters never get old and their back stories usually cause a arc plotline to occur.

Overall, this anime is awesome and should be watched by Shounen fans! It is definitely a show to watch!

yledner - 2013-06-30 08:22:29

Hmm...Fairy Tail. I have to start somewhere, so I might as well start with the character design. The characters are pretty much stereotyped from the more popular series that we have all watched and (at one point) loved. For example, Natsu, the protagonist, reminds me strongly of Luffy from One Piece. There is also a reasonable amount of fan service, but not as much as I've seen from other anime this season. The concept of Magicians' Guilds also reminds me of the Ninja Village concept of Naruto. Overall, at first sight, the anime appears to be another typical shounen anime, with lots of fighting and a little comedy mixed in.That said, I would still recommend this anime for the following reasons:1) There are a few good twists to the story which keep the viewers hooked and waiting for more. Can't say anything more here, don't want to spoil it for you guys. ;D2) Finally, an anime that gets the level of fan service just right. Fairy Tail provides a good amount of fan service, without wholly relying on it. (like Seikon no Qwaser, for example)3) Good storyline: I haven't read the manga, but from the 32 episodes I have seen so far, I'd say that fairy tail has a decent storyline, and well worth 24 minutes of your time each week. Well, that's all for my first anime review ever. Now, time to go see if the raw for Fairy Tail episode 33 is out yet.Adios,Tobikage

hirthe.mikel - 2013-03-12 20:32:11

Personally i love fairy tail i might have a small bias though because i have been watching it since it first began and in a way grew with it and its true that the anime only arcs were not good but overall the whole anime was very enjoyable so much that I've re-watched it 2 times.
