Will make you angry watching it if you have even a vague understanding of how police, governments, or people in general behave. All of the good guys seem to be mind-boggingly incompetent or just deliberately make bad decisions. Characters do things with no apparent motivation and then are angry that they did those things. Case in point: after the failed mission to stop Satou, Yū Tosaki frees Nagai from capture by the police, betraying his supervisor. Presumably, he did this because he felt he needed Nagai to attempt another capture of Satou, but immediately afterwards he regrets rescuing him and doesn’t seem to have any idea why he did it.
At one point during the failed operation to capture Satou, Nagai is the ground in front of Satou and his henchmen, and yells out “Satou doesn’t even care about you!”. This gives Tanaka, a man who must have killed dozens for Satou at this point, serious pause for thought. Really? That’s all it takes? This either sets up the cheesiest betrayal scene of the season, or it leads to nothing but functions as cheap suspense.
Later, the Japanese government is under threat of annihilation by terrorists, and the United States government offers its assistance (natch). A Japanese diplomat scoffs at this idea, saying that this voluntary offer of completely optional assistance in the face of your extinction is invasive of Japan’s sovereignty… somehow.
Comms between military units sound informal and use language like “take a shot if you think it’s a good idea”. I’m no Tom Clancy but I’m pretty sure orders aren’t given like that. The idea that Satou can acquire weapons of mass destruction, kill twelve VIPs around Japan, and no one manages to track him down… this is very convenient from a writing standpoint, but it is no way believable, and it kills immersion.
The only thing you can say positive about the show is Nagai is a likeable protagonist, because that guy is cuh-razy. He’s like Eren Yeager minus the power of friendship. You see a lot less of him being an unstable sociopath this season, and a lot more moping, so in the end I guess this season does absolutely nothing right.
Strong contender for worst anime 2016
