Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha: Lyrical Toy Box

リリカルおもちや箱

The original video performed by hitomi (under the name Minami Hokuto) that inspired Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha. It is from Triangle Heart ~Lyrical Toy Box~, a merchandise CD released on June 29, 2001 for the eroge video game Triangle Heart 3. The CD contains a large amount of fan material, including a number of visual novel-like stories called "mini-scenarios". One of them, entitled "Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha", cast Nanoha Takamachi (a minor character in the TH3 canon) as a magical girl and served as a prototype for the Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha anime series.

Let me be fair to you guys, I'm not a big fan of magical girl anime. Perhaps it's because I'm not part of the demographic these kinds of shows aim for or I just have standards that prevent me from ever becoming part of that demographic. Their stories and characters are generally too saccharine or formulaic for my tastes, and never in my years as an anime fan do I watch a show for fanservice shots. I don't see myself getting into any sort of series with these factors included.

This three-minute short is no exception, although there's something about the presentation that's oddly inviting about it. There's no story to speak of, hence why there's no score for it. It's more of a music video showcasing what could have been. It could have been meant as either a joke or a pitch to anime/visual novel publishers to get a project like this going. It's not a bad idea, and I can forgive it on the possibility that it was simply a joke that never came to fruition in its current state.

Perhaps the best thing about the video is the accompanying song. It's diabetes-inducing and catchy, and the singer is pretty okay at her job. The animation is pretty dated, but it's not terrible. I mean, I've definitely seen worse. :P

At the end of the day, I'm left wondering if the actual anime is a much better show. I've heard many opinions about it from crazed fans and loud haters alike, but perhaps my curiosity will get the better of me. Then I'll look back on this short and see how I react from there.
