D-Frag!

ディーふらぐ!

Kazama Kenji likes to believe he is something of a delinquent. Moreover, others seem to like to agree that he is. Of course, Kenji's gang finds their way to a group of four not-so-normal girls—Chitose, Sakura, Minami and Roka—and all at once, whatever reputation he may have is nothing compared to the outrageous behavior of the girls. Shanghaied into joining their club, what will happen to his everyday life from that point on? (Source: MU)

D-Frag! was THE MOST pointless anime I've watched to date...But, I was laughing HARD the whole way through and that's saying a lot because, the most I ever give is a chuckle. This had me bursting at the seams saying "What the fuck is this shit?!" Whilst laughing hysterically! I hope this helps make your decision!

Comedy is the one thing I will never recommend to anyone. And you should never ever ask me to. Comedy is so ridiculously subjective it isn't even funny, and for a more objectively-minded critic like me, it presents an obvious problem when attempting to review it.

Frankly, some people are fucking buzzkills when it comes to comedy and you'd be better off trying to get India and Pakistan to see eye to eye than trying to get some of these motherfuckers to so much as chuckle. Me? I'm far more loose with my comedic tastes. I'm not really offended by anything so almost any variety of humor is cool with me. And honestly, I'm an easily amused person so it would be kind of pathetic if a comedy series couldn't even get me to chuckle.

If I had to describe this show's style of humor, it would be "a main course of crazy hijinks, a tall glass of sly references, and a side order of boob jokes". If that sounds like your jam, then maybe this anime is right up your alley.

These isn't much of a story, not that it needs one. Former/Current/On-And-Off-Again Delinquent is roped into joining a wacky school club full of girls who pretend their lives operate on game logic and occasionally play actual games. The cast works alright as an ensemble though nobody apart from Roka stands out on their own. Roka is basically one cute little ball of densely-packed insanity and awesomeness.

The atmosphere is probably my favorite aspect of the show. The school is clearly insane, and everyone but our protagonist seems to be in on it. Epic battles are waged over mundane things, dramatic speeches and crazy plans are executed frequently, and half the time nobody seems to take anything seriously and the other half they start interpreting the silliest things in the most serious manner possible.

Really, it just kind of sucks you into its insanity and refuses to let go. It's memorable because of its really bizarre set-pieces. I can't think of another show where a gang war was started with a group of bald students over a board game in which you collect porn mags in space. Though if anyone else has seen another anime do that before, let me know. It's like everyone in this series has all the behavior patterns of a chuunibyou without the downsides of being completely delusional. Many might disagree, but I found it extraordinarily entertaining.

The production values are solid but nothing special. I remember the OP and ED for being.... really weird and somewhat catchy. It kind of reminded me of the Lucky Star OP only not QUITE as random. The visuals are colorful but limited by the standard school setting.

Overall, it's a pretty good comedy because of its sheer insanity and wit. Again, comedy is extremely subjective so don't take my praise as gospel (you should never take anything as gospel anyway but whatever).

Rewatch Value: Yes (Based on a Yes/Maybe/No scale)

In D-Frag! we follow Kenji Kazama, a high school delinquent who ends up in a situation where he’s practically hunted down by the members of the Game Creation Club.

You see, the Game Creation Club doesn’t have five members and that just happens to be the minimum for a high school club to have, so they have to go through any means necessary to get Kenji to join.

While the show is a gag-comedy that doesn’t really focus much on developing a storyline of events, it does a surprising amount of fleshing out each character in this very first episode. This even includes characters outside of the Game Creation Club, such as Kenji’s three childhood friends who also attend the school. It wouldn’t feel right detailing any of the jokes since that could ruin them, but I’ll just mention that my favourite gag this week directly relates to the review subtitle up there. Not only am I weak to all elements, I’m super-weak to fire and water it would seem.

Something that really surprised me about D-Frag! was the level of detail in the animation. There’s a chase sequence quite early on that sports some great digital cinematography and while the scene is short, still manages to make things more exciting than some high budgeted action shows. I also found myself quite enjoying the character designs and art-style.

Shows that focus on gags and just being funny are always tricky to review. So in case this review said no word of value at all, here’s a short and quick summary:

D-Frag! has a really funny first episode with some really funny characters. I’d join the Game Creation Club in a second.
