Ever since I was a young kid I enjoyed playing Sonic The hedgehog games. They were not only fun, but something that simply drew me in was the link you’d create with some of the characters. Sonic X is not exactly that kind of anime. For hardcore fans of the series like myself, it is without any doubts something you have to watch, but if you aren’t, then you might be disappointed.

The plot of the story, or should I say storieS since Sonic X is splitted in 3 segments, each covering different arcs. The first arc was a bit painful, a slice-of-life style that just didn’t feel right. The second and third arcs were really enjoyable for me though. The references to Sonic Adventure DX and Sonic Adventure 2 Battle were well placed. The games obviously did it better, but it is still nice to see such spinoff.

The ending, or the 3rd arc, is what the first should’ve been. They picked up an actual story they’ve and made it progress through the last few episodes. It was… weird, yet fun to watch. This anime is definitively not the best spinoff that could have been made, but I would recommend it to any hardcore fans of the Sonic saga.

Watched it as a kid, thought it was pretty good. When I went back to rewatch it years later, I found it kind of meh. The English voice actors sounded like they were halfheartedly attempting to stay awake and many of the voices weren’t too great. Rouge had this bland 40 year old woman voice, and Tails sounded more like a four year old girl than an eight year old boy. The original Japanese version was much better in my opinion.

As you can see from my profile pic, I am a big fan of sonic ( unless I changed it, in which case what I just said is pointless :/ )

Back to the review, now I played a lot of sonic`s games almost all o them, and I was very happy as a kid to hear that they were making another sonic cartoon ( well I didn`t know what anime was back then ), but I was also skeptical, since the last one had nothing to do with the original games. But this one surprised me in a good way. The story of this show, is taken from Sonic Adventures 1 & 2 but with there own spin on it, so if you played does games, you will now the base of the story, since it is changed a lot so that it could fit as a show, but it still has the same concept. The biggest change however, is that they came from a planet of there own, which makes them aliens, while in the games, there origin, has never been discussed. I definitely liked there spin on the story, and the totally original second half of the show, but the show had too many pointless episodes, but then again, this is a kids show, I can`t expect a death note type of story. The animation was solid, and the voice over was done by the brilliant game crew, this is probably one of 4Kids best dubs, alongside Yu gi oh! & pokemon. The characters stay true to there game counterparts, and there are quite a lot of them, they even put some characters who have only showed up in hand healed sonic games. The only character I did not like, and by did not like I mean hated his guts, was the only original main character, otherwise known as Chris. Overall, a good anime, but unless you are a big sonic fan like me, or are around 13 or better yet younger, I`d recommend staying not watching it. But if you watched it and liked it, there is a comic book based on it, so go check that out if you want to.
