Akuma no Riddle is a fairly average anime about twelve assassins transferring into one class, Class Black, in order to kill one girl: Haru. If they succeed in going so, they will be granted one wish, any wish, within human capability. However, one of the assassins, Tokaku, develops feelings for Haru and decides to protect her. Like I said, the story is pretty average, but there is one thing I would like to point out is that it is not yuri for the sake of yuri, there are simply female characters who develop feelings towards each other. The story follows an episodic structure, giving each assassin an episode to flesh themselves out and give background. The characters themselves are also not so special, but they are varied and I enjoyed finding out each of the girls' motivations. The ending however, is less than satisfactory. While some of the flashes showing what happens to the girls after Class Black are cathartic, it lessens the impact of several scenes by magically resurrecting FOUR CHARACTERS for the sake of a happy ending. I neither wanted nor asked a happy ending from this anime. They took one of the character arcs, which while melancholy, was still beautiful, and took away the power of the finale. Despite this, however, I would recommend a watch, but don't feel like you have to go out of your way. It'll still be there later.

Riddle me this; How do you take what should be a fun premise and ruin it?
Akuma no Riddle, incorrectly translated as "Riddle Story of Devil" (it really should be Devil's Riddle, which sound way cooler and is more accurate), is a show about a bunch of female assassins trying to kill one girl when suddenly one of them decides to protect said girl from the rest.
It's kinda like the movie Smoking Aces 2, if it were a yuri/action anime. Not being a big fan of yuri, I'm frankly not sure how it stands in that department. It certainly had way less than I was expecting, but perhaps it was just so subtle that I tuned it out.
This could have been a decent "rule of cool" show if not for the bland characters and crappy writing. There's just so many little things that don't add up in this story. I'm not going to go into detail as to not spoil anything but here's a couple of problems.
1. Character Motivations sometimes make little logical sense.
2. Many things don't happen that logically should, and vice-versa.
3. The show takes itself a bit too seriously to excuse a lot of silly conveniences in the writing.
There is a plot development towards the end that explains one or two of these writing blunders, but most of ends up being badly written. Even the ending is cheap and lazy. It's a pussyfoot ending that carries absolutely no consequence for the actions taken. It's as if everything leading up to it was one big joke on the audience.
They try developing each of the assassins but it backfires. They're each given so little time that they all come across as bland archetypes with forced drama backstories. I literally cannot remember most of their names. The only two characters worth a damn are Nio and Tokaku.
The first for being just a fun little mischievous psycho and the second for having a legitimate character arc. I guess we're supposed to care about Haru's well being but honestly it falls flat for a few reasons.
1. She's stupid. I haven't seen survival instinct this bad since Miko in Transformers Prime. Except here it's even worse. She causes more harm to herself than the assassins ever manage to.
2. She practically immortal. As long as Tokaku manages to take down the assassin of the week in a timely manner, all injuries Haru suffers amount to nothing.
3. She's a usually well-liked archetype (the Pollyanna) that feels so out of place and generic in this setting that I just didn't care about her.
The show is mildly amusing at times for its fight scenes and stupidity but it's still hard to recommend, even to its intended audience.
Now on the production values. The BGM is really good. Very atmospheric and fits the dark visuals perfectly. Part the reason the show isn't a total bore is because the music and visuals are actually pretty engaging. The lighting, shading and design of the setpieces all come together to make something pleasing to the senses. If only it could've pleased my brain as well, *sigh*.
They experimented in trying to give the assassins more depth by having 12 different ending themes, each focusing on a different character/characters (except the final one). But they're all mostly generic and fall flat aside from maybe Nio's theme and the final ED. Try quality over quantity next time. The OP is pretty catchy, sung by the lovely Uchida Maaya.
The animation suffers a tiny bit in distance shots but overall is very impressive coming from a studio I'd never heard of before. I'll atleast keep an eye out for their name in the future.
Overall, this show could be a decent watch if you're bored and just want something that looks and sounds nice. But it is held back by crap writing, bland characters, and ridiculously out-of-place and barely justified ending and just being kind of dumb in general.
Rewatch Value: No (Based on a Yes/Maybe/No scale)

Summary: The story is set at Myoujou Academy, a private girls' boarding school. The 10th year's Kurogumi class has 12 assassins with their sights on one target, Haru Ichinose. Tokaku Azuma is a recent transfer student who is also targeting Ichinose, but she gradually develops feelings for Ichinose.
Story: The story is definitely not this shows strongest point. Its overall a pretty predicable story and the show is very episodic with each episode being dedicated to one of the assassins. But, I feel that the motivations of many of the assassins and their back story could have been further explored. Even the main two characters Ichinose and Azuma don't get alot of back story. The story is one where you just turn you brain off and watch. The ending also isn't the greatest but its not horrible either.
Animation: The animation is very good and all the fight scenes are very well done. The characters and environment are very well animated and nice to look at.
Sound: I thought the theme music of the show was very good. And i felt that the Japanese voices really fit with the characters. The intro is also very good.
Characters: As mentioned before the characters really don't get much development and you really only learn just enough about some of them to remember there names and what their wish is. I feel each characters background could have been better developed.
Enjoyment: I did enjoy the series, if anything it was entertaining enough to keep me interested as long as i did not pay attention to the terribly predicable plot.
Overall: I would recommend you watch this if you have nothing better to do but I wouldn't go out of my way to watch it.

This sad excuse of a show was a huge waist of time that derives from the deepest pits of mediocrity. Story sums up as being as entertaining as watching a pseudo intellectual trying to talk about philosophy while talking with her mouth full.
Animation was "Meh'". With fight scenes being the only somewhat interesting parts of the show. But even that falls flat on its face when you realize how much you just don't care about any of the characters. Speaking of characters. They were poorly written and uninteresting, mostly because a lot of the character motivations made no sense, especially when it revolves around the plot. Also, that fucking ending man! There were a few moments when it absolutely looked like a character died, but lord and be hold... NOBODY DIED!? Yeah in the last five minutes of the show we see them up and happily alive while one of the main protagonists sets off with her love interest (?), carrying diplomas of her class mates in hopes of being able to hand them out to them some day... To class mates that tried to KILL her.
As for the music it was also quite mediocre. But something was rubbing me the wrong end with the music from from the more "Intense" scenes, because (I swear to god) one of the tracks sounds so familiar and yet I can't remember what show it seems to rip it from. That thought alone cemented into my mind and ended up distracting me through out the entire series. Honestly though the only thing they seemed to have gotten right was the intro and the ending themes. Intro was fairly decent, it was good enough for me to watch every once and a while. As for the ending themes, each episode had it's own ending theme that related to the character that the episode revolved around. Interesting design choice if I'd had cared enough to watch after I finished an episode. Which I didn't.
Overall don't listen to what anyone else says and don't watch this show, you'll thank me for it.

Akuma no Riddle is an incredibly intelligent series that explores the mindset of assassins and takes into account aspects of human psychology and projectile physics. It expounds on the multitude of techniques employed byprofessional assassins in order to corner the intended target. As Akuma no Riddle features competition between multiple assassins, it has a considerable number of mind games that will be sure to leave you utterly speechless.

At the moment, Akuma no Riddle is a battle royal anime with interesting characters but with a faulty plot. Considering the number of episodes, I would assume that each character would not be given enough attention, which would result for this anime to fail and yet, it would be a magnificent failure due to its complexity.
If each characters are explored, this anime would be amazing, if not, it would just be a failure that is amazing to watch...
FINAL IMPRESSION
My finally impression after finishing Akuma no Riddle is that it is an anime worth watching only to see how it crash and burns.
At it's core, Akuma no Riddle is an interesting anime, with an interesting plot, but with a faulty execution.
Akuma no Riddle is an episodic anime, with each anime focusing on an assassin, their background and motivation. An interesting premise but due to only allocating one episode per character, makes every episode a cluster fuck.
The characters of Akuma no Riddle are all interesting. All characters have wonderful background and motivation, to the extent that each character can have an anime of their own. The characters are the strong point of the series.
The story telling on the other hand is the weakness of this anime. With such interesting and vast number of characters, they should have allocated more than one episode to explore each character.
The sound was decent. The animation, though not the best, is still amazing.
The anime has several good episodes but my god, The ending sucks.
That ending prove my first impression of Akuma no Riddle.
Akuma no Riddle is a pure fun anime that was going to be a failure, but it is a failure that is fun to watch, and I did enjoy watching Akuma no Riddle from episode 1 to episode 12. I was never bored watching this anime, regardless of how spectacular this anime failed.
