Love, Election and Chocolate

恋と選挙とチョコレート

In Japan, participation in extra-curricular activities is as fundamental a part of an education as chalk and gym shorts. However, not all students are overachievers, and for those like Yuki Ojima, groups like the Food Research Club are welcome havens in which to slack-off. But what's a slacker to do when the radical new candidate for Student Council president announces her intent to get rid of clubs like the FRC? Well, getting the help of the current Student Council president is a good start, but HIS suggestion is so counter-intuitive that it's crazy: Yuki should run for the Student Council himself? And yet, it's SO crazy that it just might work! Especially when Chisato, the chocolate-adverse president of the FRC (and Yuki's best childhood friend,) and members of other targeted school clubs start to join the swelling FRC army. But can this army of goofs and goof-offs coast all the way to political victory? Or will someone have to step up to the plate and take one for the team? (Source: Sentai Filmworks)

With such potential by its 12 eps, the anime was worth watching than few other anime series with the same genres. It might sounds weird how come the school life anime series like KoiChoco can turn into an amusing story if its compared with other common school life animes. KoiChoco involves some politic aspects, it made us explore the fight of characters in the election. Begins from a simple-minded intention to only keep the club running and able to get budget, a penny-in-line wish paves the way to intrigue behind the election. That’s how the show captivated audience.
Eventhough I mentioned politic aspects before, the show won’t make us suffer from serious actions related to pure political activity. Tricky characters do their job perfectly for the show. KoiChoco doesn’t focus on election only but the relationship amongst them too. The election problem still keep on track with the plot to reinforce each characters bond one to another. Since there are few characters, on the top of that minor characters appear quite much, the development characters weren’t felt much better than the major characters itself. Their emotions are involved, such as love, discomfort, fear, and concern, but with less development.
I like bright colour and soft shading and the line, it’s quite thinner and made characters movement looks more flexible. Overall, this show had good visualization, it’s more than just decent. You can love its art, feel the depth of beauty from its intensifying colours. I attached to this show in the first place because of its visualization then fell in love with its story.
One of my favorite parts of KoiChoco is its music, includes the theme songs, insert songs, and compatible seiyuu. Annabel is sung the OP theme, Signal Graph (シグナルグラフ). It has melodious tone, its soothing tones are sweet, as well as the ED theme Kaze no Naka no Primrose (風のなかのプリムローズ) by Ceui. I can enjoy my supper with these two as backsound of my deserted time.

I don’t know why it has low popularity despite the amazing story it has.
Pros:
Nice visualization, match with its seiyuu. Nice combooo~
Story is worth to watch omnomnom

Cons:
in-depth development (for characters) needed

Plot: In Japan, participation in extra-curricular activities is as fundamental a part of an education as chalk and gym shorts. However, not all students are overachievers, and for those like Yuki Ojima, groups like the Food Research Club are welcome havens in which to slack-off. But what's a slacker to do when the radical new candidate for Student Council president announces her intent to get rid of clubs like the FRC? But can this army of goofs and goof-offs coast all the way to political victory? Or will someone have to step up to the plate and take one for the term? Now, you may have come here because it has the same creators as Ao no Kanata visual novel, or vice versa. You may be wondering if you expect some FC (flying circus) on this one, or maybe the same universe as that. But no, this is different. This is like the anime version of the US Election 2016, but with high-school students from Japan. You expect politics on this one. Alooooot of things. But politics aside, the romance in this one is pretty.. cliche, I guess? You know how it ends. You know who the MC chooses over this pathetic harem (there's really no harem). Of course, it is said that 90% of all male MC choose the childhood friend route. You may be wondering, "Dude, that's such a spoiler...", but I'm sorry. An MC choosing the childhood friend route is just so common in romcoms. YOu should know that. (sorry I'm secretly a Chisato fan). Anyways, romance aside, the art is expected to be classy. (I don't really know how to describe it). The closest thing to describe the artstyle is just deformed cartoon face--- nevermind actually. I should say that the animation is reeeaaaalllly goood. I didn't even recognize any CGI at all! (Sorry, I've watched this like a few months ago). All right, the character development is just different from the visual novel. Of course, you take different routes on VN, so you expect a lot of character development. But this anime took the childhood friend route + some scenes from the other route. Meaning that there were some character development between [insert girl name] and the MC. So, the character development is pretty... predictable. That's all. By the way, if you plan to play the VN, beware that it is literally hentai. Oh, Ao no Kanata VN is also hentai itself so.. yeah..

STORY:

The story is one of the most realistic (to some part) overview of what actually politics is. The first few episodes manage to give me the feel of generic harem anime. We've got dense MC, his childhood friend, a busty club member, a loli club member, a bishie club member ( yep I thought first that this guy is part of his harem), a hot teacher, a sexy rival and a bullied hottie. But how wrong I was ehen suddenly The story decided to take a U-turn and make the easy-going nature of a harem anime into a VERY SERIOUS anime about politics. That turn somehow caught me off guard and I didn't realize that I was watching an intense anime. The conclusion to the story is brilliant making me wonder why 25 episode anime can't conclude a damn story well (see SAO for details) I mean seriously this anime only contains 12 episode and yet it tells a very wonderful yet concrete storyline.

CHARACTER:

The character development is very solid and one of the charm point of the anime specially toward the MC and his childhood friend while the rest of the club members are shunned and denied the right to have a backstory or even a development if they're not a part of the MC's harem (sort of). The character interaction and very interesting and the way the MC handles his relationship is just brilliant.

ANIMATION:

The animation doesn't stand out that much but I had to admit that it is appealing to me at some point.

SOUND:

The soundtracks didn't have that much of effect In fact I completely forgot that the anime had one.

PERSONALY ENJOYMENT:

I did enjoy this anime because of it's very interesting story and set of characters.

An Underrated Classic.

Love, Elections and Chocolate, follows the "Snack food research club", essentially a club where a group of friends eat junk food all day. The teacher in charge of the club couldn't mind, she gets free beer!

However, the current treasurer annoucnes that she will cut the funding for all useless clubs, thus the snack food research club is in danger of splitting up. Originally they wanted to just wanted to back up an electorate for the upcoming student election to save them, but they decide to go one higher and prep club member Yuki Ojima to become an electorate themselves. Now they enter a world of politics and communication, but must face the seedy side of the school, with attempted murders, bullyings, assults, kidnappings and extortion.

While this show may have its flaws, its original and engaging story kept me interested the whole way through. Without spoiling the plot. I must admit that the first few episodes tend to drag out, but by episode 4, it quickens the pacing. The only thing that never worked with the show was the implied wackyness of their world. The story is set in a school with thousands of students, so the race for the school president position is a cut throat sport. However, they tend to take the politics way too seriously for a SCHOOL, I'm talking about attempted murder, kidnappings, extortion and assault. That's why I felt they could of set this in the adult world and it would have worked better. Perhaps, rather than cutting the clubs to save funding, they could have turned them into governmental committees. The school president position could have been a mayor or senator position and the story would work all the same. Simple. While it does address some issues like bigotry and bullying against poor kids, as well as main female lead's secret struggle with PTSD from a tragedy in her childhood. An aspect I respected was its realism related to political policies, the main male wants to introduce a possible controversial policy, but is advertised to keep it from the public until he could be voted in. I respect that and it was a clever idea.

While it could be classified as a harem anime, harem it is not. You can see why the main male and his eventual girlfriend get together, but you also feel for the other characters. We get to see a three dimensional look at most of the club members. The dialogue is always witty and the comedy never runs out. The series climax was exciting and unlike most shows that have came out in the past three years, this one had a satisfying conclusion. It tells the audience all has been wrapped up but it leaves opportunity for a new story if there was one. This show has a special place in my heart.

Story (9/10)

When I read that this anime was going to be about elections I was pretty skeptical of it at first. I thought to myself, well it would be impossible for him to lose the election because then the story wouldn't make any damn sense. And if that's all the anime is just going to be about then it would be incredibly predictable and boring. However I'm glad to say that elections isn't all this anime has to offer. The first part of the first episode starts off with a BANG and can leave you kind of confused about the rest of the episode, but rest assured everything gets explained with time. The anime does a good job of previewing at the character's mysterious back-stories and slowly reveals more about them with time. Their pasts are really interesting to watch and provide a lot of information about the motives behind their actions. It also has some dark moments that I won't explain in details because it would be spoilerish but it really brought out my emotions (and I might have got teary eyed at some parts). The climactic scenes were done really well and even though I knew he was going to win the election from the very beginning, I still felt like the anime kept me hooked into the story with everything that it had to offer.

Animation (9/10)

I'm not exactly an expert with Animation/Art styles, but the anime looked pretty visually appealing and it was done really well in comparison to other anime that I've watched recently.

Sound (7/10)

The Opening/Endings weren't exactly that great nor did I like them very much. The music within the anime however was decent enough. The music matches the mood of what's going on so you can tell when a confrontation is breaking out or something comedic is about to happen just by paying attention to what music starts playing. They also end every episode with the same music so you can always tell when the episode has ended.

Characters (9/10)

As I mentioned earlier the mysterious pasts behind the character's was really quite interesting to hear about it. And even though this anime is kind of a harem in which the main character is usually dense as a rock, Oojima does not suffer from this and he was actually quite perceptive to what was going on around him. I usually have a character or two that I just plain don't like in basically every anime I watch, but I didn't really find someone I hated in this one. Every character is likable enough and they all have their motives and reasonings behind their actions, even the main villain.

Enjoyment (10/10)

Yeah if you couldn't tell already I really enjoyed watching this anime. I marathoned through it in one night and while the beginning can kind of throw you off at first it really starts to hook you with it's mysterious story and characters. The bits of comedy thrown in were enjoyable as well and the anime does a good enough job not to put in overbearing amounts of fan service which generally happens in most harem style anime.

Overall (9/10)

It isn't perfect I'll admit. The fact it's an election just gives away the fact the main character HAS to win in the end. However the way he accomplishes it is really quite amazing. The anime does such a good job sneak peeking at and explaining the story that it keeps you hooked all the way through the series. I had my share of laughs and tears from this anime and overall I really enjoyed it and I'm glad that I watched it.
