オーバーロード

The final hour of the popular virtual reality game Yggdrasil has come. However, Momonga, a powerful wizard and master of the dark guild Ainz Ooal Gown, decides to spend his last few moments in the game as the servers begin to shut down. To his surprise, despite the clock having struck midnight, Momonga is still fully conscious as his character and, moreover, the non-player characters appear to have developed personalities of their own! Confronted with this abnormal situation, Momonga commands his loyal servants to help him investigate and take control of this new world, with the hopes of figuring out what has caused this development and if there may be others in the same predicament. Overlord Review
Tread carefully! This review contains spoilers!!

This is a review up until episode 17!
If you like SAO and Log Horizon, this show is for you, being smarter than SAO and very different from the perspective Log horizon takes, it's a refreshing take on the "trapped in a game" genre .Great anime a match watch

Overlord, as the rank itself was an outstanding rank to symbolize the tremendous power of the user. Unfortunately the rank failed to save Momonga from trapped in a world of fantasy game, thus there is only one thing that you can do. Time for some real action. He himself will pass the judgments upon Yggdrasil. Which future will Momonga bring? A bright future filled with joy or a living hell full with horrors, pain, anguish, and punishment. Regarded as the highest of the Almighty 41 Supreme Beings of the Great Tomb of Nazarick. This is the right time to conquer Yggdrasil, a world of fantasy game. Anyone who tried to resist or oppose him shall face the ultimate humiliation and loss, to suffer for eternally.

Review
The series has been adapted out of Overlord manga written by Maruyama Kugane which is not yet finished and still ongoing. This manga received a very well welcome when it was published for the first time. By no time, Overlord manga has already successful hooked a lot of fans. However, the series is still far from succeeding. The glory will be decided upon when the author ensures not to rush the storyline and naturally follow its own pace. The sole purpose is to justify the right of Manga and the Novel. Do not misunderstand me, this series has a really great potential. It is a fact that you must know. Anyways, this series is already exceeding my expectations by proven that it one of the best anime in summer seasons. You might miss a few of the deeper plot elements, but it is still an enjoyable and often times the story is rather buffoonery. Nonetheless, this series is standing victorious over the field.

The series fight scene is rather excessive in violence, bloody, and such a bloody rain in term of gore. To put it clearly, it’s rather a brutal way to been presented. I did not expect this since I’ve been put my mind that this series probably will be censored the scene. Regretful, it does not apply. For people who kind of new to anime series, and anime fans who can’t stand a pure bloody gore, you probably will not like this one aspect. The rating for this series is R - 17+ (violence & profanity). Keep this on your mind. Gore fans, this is a birthday gift for you. Recommended audience for this series is adult and teenagers who are mature enough to evaluate. Anyway, if some parents trying to consider watching this series with your kids or putting it simply kid underage, please never do. Kid underage tend to imitate what they have see in the program show even though it just animation. Kids are basically pure. They still do not know anything about adult world. Worse case, they may have trauma, laugh if you want but people should take this matter more seriously for their own goodness. In the end, undeniably Overlord is still a good series to watch.

Character
Momonga perfectly define the best figure for main villain and undeniably brilliant to be disliked, much less hated. He's such a manly man although his humanity is slowly fading away. His skills are a significant to assess the abilities each of his comrade to the fullest. To some extent though, Momonga does not really mind being insulted by the enemy purely because want to see for him selves, how superior it is the enemy powers and abilities. Momonga also is able to intelligently manipulate people without even shows his powerful demonic aura. With Momonga abilities, knowledge and experience he had go through, the series allows one's imagination to run wild thinking how superior Momonga existence itself. That’s one of the beauties from Overlord.

Animation
The animation for this series is very good and flawless. The artwork is colorful and each of the character designs is very well done. Concept of creating a non human for the main lead is also fresh scene once in a while. The Great Tomb of Nazarick also carefully designed and each floor has a different design as well as the keepers. Bluntly, I seriously like Momonga. The way He cast a simple magic trick or a powerful magic attack make it as realistic as it was definitely real. In other words, with a short brief of how his power works, we can accept it easily without too much thinking.

Sound
The opening series is very catchy with a rather interesting lyric. While the Eds has symbolize the purity of Albedo. These two Op and Eds is actually quite a good song. The sound is slowly embracing us gently and I quite impressed by the incredible sound effects in this series. Indeed such an incredible effort by the voice actors, Op and Eds vocalist to keep up the best performance to date. The series music section deems another one extra point.

Enjoyment and Overall
But what makes it so great is the story of the game itself. Little biased with a previous concept such as Sword Art Online (SAO) and Log Horizon (LH) but amazingly arise and ascend amongst them. In my own opinion, the story, the sound and adding with art animation together were creating such a masterpiece. The only problem is our hero does not have skin, blood or any human organs. He is totally undead beings. The skeleton body is kind of cool, but highly no fan girls will attracted to our main lead. Fortunately, our main lead shines bright through the ugliness. No need to worry about romance; he still has Albeldo who's totally love him deeply and the other girls to be with him at times of thick and thin. I'm not quite sure why but he was the only person I doesn’t mind getting harem. Magically, I'm supporting him. For my second problems with this show is the number of episodes. The episode in the series is way too short. I do not mean the episode length, rather why this series only has 13 episodes per series that make it such a huge disappointment. Anyways, I still recommended this series as it was highly entertaining and give you quite a ride up to the finish line.

A while ago, I was going through the list of anime being released this season. I was very dissapointed with what I saw for the most part, *COUGHPRISONSCHOOLCOUGH* but despite all that, I did manage to find some interesting anime that were airing. So, with nothing better to do, I started watching, among a few others, Overlord. What drew me in to this show was the cover image. It straight away distinguished itself from all the other generic boring Echi romcoms (personal opinion, no hate please). What kept me going was the description. A guy gets stuck in a game world? well, we all know SAO, Log Horizon, and (less so) .hack. But none of these other shows focus on the "dark side" of humanity. In fact, until Log Horizon came along, all they thought about was "Let's all get out of this awesome game world as fast as we can because unlike most people our real world lives are much more interesting than a made up fantasy one." Which, when you think about it, is a little stupid. Log Horizon than offered the idea that maybe they were actually normal people, and wanted to stay in the game world. Now, we're starting to get the idea of what would actually happen if someone was stuck in the most OP character ever made (yes, he would even beat Kirito or Tatsuya Shiba). *WARNING* slight episode one spoilers ahead, but really, if you consider what it is spoilers, perhaps you need to spend more time in the R 18+ side of anime...

STORY
Well, seeing as I seem to be doing this properly, I might as well subdivide my points. Story-wise, the idea of the show is that a boring salaryman from Japan enjoys playing an MMORPG (this is also around 100 years in the future, just for reference). He's playing the game in his level 100 Skeletal Mage character for the last day of the servers being operational (its never explained why they're shut down. The game is called Yggdrasil, the most popular game of its kind because of its player freedom. Things start to get interesting as when the servers are scheduled to shut down, he isn't logged out of the game. He starts to freak out even more when his beautiful second-in-command, Albedo, talks to him. He confirms that he's not in the game by doing the most logical thing. Groping. Yes, because this game wasn't R rated, (and probably to stop in-game sexual harassment, I mean, this is a game where you can feel everything the avatar can, and control it like your own body, presumably there needs to be restrictions to stop those things from happening) he was able to figure out he wasn't in the game by groping her. This is where the show reaches the first hurdle it doesn't make. It has a tell not show philosophy. The first 2-3 episodes are pretty much all exposition dump to give you the most basic of information about the game and the new world he's in, and its not the only time it happens. While I can see the need for people to know many of the things described, the way it was presented was... painful. The show would have benefited greatly from keeping some of the information from us at the start, and letting us discover it in a less in-your-face method. This isn't a problem restricted to the show, as it's pretty much copy-paste from the light novel. The idea, and the things that happen, and the way they portray different characters, and tell this story of world domination is great. I love the fact that the show and novel have long parts where they focus on fairly minor characters, and give you a different point of view from the main one. They make up for the lack of an antagonist that can stand up to the MC for very long at all by making it all very in-depth and make every small side story seem important. But many things are just clunky. Conversations, exposition, all of that could have been handled better, but alas, we will never get ourselves the image of perfection.

ANIMATION
My previous two paragraphs were massive, so I'm going to make up for lost space. The animation is quite good, the characters detailed, and the worlds full.

SOUND
Told you I'm making up for lost space. The soundtrack is amazing. The opening and ending songs are my current favourite (apart from the new Anti-Hero by Sekai no Owari from AoT live action), and the voice actors do a great job in the sub. I don't even know if there's a dub yet, but if there is, it probably won't be as good.

CHARACTERThe Characters are brilliant. A salary-man becoming the Overlord of a giant tomb full of insanely powerful creatures? Try to find that elsewhere. He does a great job at giving the air of an all-powerful "supreme being" that knows all and has plans for the next 200 years, while still keeping the realistic voice inside his head constantly crying out WHHYYYYY!!!!! His subordinates, while occasionally getting annoying with their undying love and loyalty for him, are mainly interesting. Not very many characters I could consider trope-breaking, but fun to watch still. The humans and other assorted creatures from the rest of the world all feel right, and despite the clunky conversations with the MC, they felt like they really lived in that world of insanity.

ENJOYMENT
I really enjoyed it

CONCLUSION
Overlord is worth the watch, and when you get tired of waiting, worth the read. It's still ongoing, and (unless you can read Japanese) is currently on the 6th volume. The anime is currently at the end of the second. I can't speak about the rest of the show, but I think it will end up to be on the more interesting side of anime this year. If you bothered to read this far, I'll also say that if you analyse the opening sequence, it contains things that will probably never be animated, at least not this season. The only downside I can see about it is it seems to be going like No Game No Life, and Deadman Wonderland, in that the anime will end in a place where you just want to know what happens next, sets itself up for more, and never delivers. All that aside, give it a go.

As an extra point for those who really have too much spare time, this show (In my own opinion) also has a fair bit of merit for being similar to Lord of the Flies. It shows (an interpretation) of what would happen if this certain event occurred, and showed it in a darker (and probably more realistic) tone. It's really quite interesting to take apart and analyse character actions, especially for Momonga (the MC), who is later Ainz-sama, and is also known as Mormon-san, as he is the one who's in a place he should never have gotten to. It will be interesting to see how his character turns out, and if you have the time, post a deconstruction of him on the wiki page, because I'm sure he will have some easily mappable changes, and you could write for hours on what it all means.

Then again, not everyone spends there evenings writing reviews to get out of writing a 6000 page report due the next day... Procrastination for the win!

Apologies for any mistakes, I do (as I said), have other things I need to get onto.

this anime is a terrible mistake can't believe the Studio is Mad House , but hey.... after Absolute Joke we have OVERJOKE !

bmarvin - 2015-08-18 11:13:37

Before we get started I should note that the series is still being aired and that this review isn't complete as such. It's been over two months and I've finished the show now.

On the internet I've seen various comments saying how this is just another SAO or Log horizon ripoff etc. Overlord manages to differentiate itself from different 'trapped in game' animes. The main character Momongo/Ains Ooal Gown (AOG) is a max level character of an anti-human guild who was a giant otaku without even a semblance of a worthy real life. Because of this AOG doesn't mind his new life much (if at all). Instead he tries to conquer the world.

Story: It's a new take on the genre and the perspective is that of a 'bad guy'. I might just be overthinking this but this anime does lead to some basic morale questions. The MC is slowly losing his human emotions as he is truly turned undead and can we regard the now self-conscious Npc's as truly human? And as such is murdering them as bad as it would have been in the real world? The pacing of the anime is rather slow but that's not something that matters to me. The only major problem is the fact that the MC is one of the (if not THE) single most powerful entities in the anime and therefore there's a lack of a decent antagonist (so far).

Now that I've finished it I stick with my earlier points, the pacing is slow/alright for 12 out of 13 episodes. (Episode 10 felt fairly rushed), the antagonist/antagonist organisation is revealed late in this series and is going to be a focal point in the second season (if there'll be one).

Animation: First of, let me say that I'm quite the fan of the opening song Clattonia. The battle sequences are fluid, the aesthetics are good, I like the artstyle. I'd say stuff like wonderful usage of color but frankly I don't have the capabilities to judge over those things.

Sound: Once again the opening theme is great, the ending is alright. Other than that, not much to say here.

Character: The MC is a skeletal overlord trying to take over the world by rational actions. If that doesn't excite you I don't know what will. It's interesting to see him change from a human player to a true undead overlord and how he deals with his situation. The rivalry between Albedo and Shalltear is fun to watch (most of the time). One things I ask myself is whether there'll be actual character development since most (if not all) supporting characters are npc's with fixed settings.

Well there hasn't been much development except for the main character, Lord Ains Ooan Goal and some of the humans. Most ex-npc's seem to be fairly fixed in their roles, you get to know them better but that's it.

Enjoyment: I'm enjoying watching this anime, it's lighthearted in it's appearance yet can make you wonder about basic morality. The show also laughs with it's audience, making various otaku-related innuendos.

This all hasn't changed much, it stays light-hearted, you get to see a story from the 'monster' perspective. It cotninues to laugh with it's audience and all in all is just a blast to watch.

tara.goodwin - 2015-08-06 17:18:37

So, here we have yet another "trapped in a video game" storyline. I watched it because it is a Madhouse anime and it seemed promising to have an "evil" character and his minions ruling over the NPC inhabitants.

Episode 1: Nothing happens. Fine, okay, it's episode 1. We need some time to establish setting and characters Momonga tweaks the setting on an NPC called Albedo so that instead of being a b****, she is madly in love with him. "Well," I thought. "That's gonna come back to bite him in the arse." When she turns sentient, she proves to be really frigging annoying.

Episode 2: Nothing happens. There are so many darn characters in this show that they need more time to show us everyone. This is made worse when we find out a second NPC character is madly in love with Momonga. We are force to watch her bicker with Albedo for a long time over who gets to be the "main wife" (because of course he'll have multiple wives, he's awesome, the girls agree on this). We also have to hear about him having children. Ugh. He's a skeleton. I don't even want to know how that would work. Anyway, this goes on for entirely too long. Then Momonga sends a team out to scout the area and hide the fortress. This episode is boring. I vowed that if the third episode makes me watch those girls bicker again I'm dropping the show.

Episode 3: a good episode. We find out Momonga is losing his humanity, and is struggling with what he knows he used to feel and the emotions he now lacks. Albedo is given decent and cool-looking armor instead of sexual fetish armor. In order to gain further understanding of this world they have no knowledge of, they go out and save a village so they can make allies. I decide to watch episode 4.

Episode 4: Another good episode. Momonga and Albedo slaughter a bunch of a-holes. It's fun that they're evil and hate humans but are doing stuff to save them to benefit themselves. Albedo is annoying when she gets angry and goes into "fawn over Momonga" mode. Momonga decides to call himself Ainz Ooal Gown because I guess he doesn't care if anyone can spell or pronounce his name.

Episode 5: First two minutes they make me watch the girls fawn and fight over Ainz again. Seriously now that you established the cool stuff you are falling back on this dumb s***?

Me: Screw this series. I am done.
Overlord: Bye, Felicia.

At least I don't have to be annoyed with it anymore.

Short Simple review
Overlord is an anime similar to that of other animations that is set in a 'game' world, eg. Log Horizon, SAO etc. Although it may be similar the story and its style is much different as it is directed to mature audiences (in my perspective). All in all, It is better to watch for yourself, just keep in mind that is different to virtual game world animes. So far... Pre-good!
