Two years ago, Kiniro Mosaic took my obsession with anime in a new, more wholesome direction. It pretty much cemented my love for moeblob comedy slice-of-life shows, and it felt regrettable that it had to end. Then this OVA came along.
The focus of this extended episode belongs to Aya of all people, who begins to feel doubt about her friendship with Youko and Shino. I mean, it is understandable considering Alice and Karen steal attention faster than a flame dies from being submerged in water. Considering Aya and Youko never got explored much in the main show, I welcome the concept.
At first, I was beginning to feel worried that the usually story-lite structure of Kiniro Mosaic would be thrown out in place of a greater emphasis on plot. As the OVA progressed, I began to realize that isn’t the case. You see, KinMoza is a show where people come for the fun and cutesy characters and stay for the heartwarming and emotional scenes. In this case, the subtle story elements woven into this special actually made me interested in Aya’s character and plight. It also hints at themes that make me think about how deep the characters are, how they think and why they do what they do. Granted, KinMoza was never a show that required you to think, but it kindly invites you to understand the small nuances of life. It gives meaning to all the fun things the characters do, and makes them grow stronger as individuals and as a group of friends.
I digress. This special reminded me why I love KinMoza, even after going two years without seeing it. Now I can only hope I never outgrow this series, as I may find myself watching it all over again before I know it.
