March comes in like a lion

3月のライオン

Rei Kiriyama is a 17-year-old boy who recently started living alone, financed by his salary as a professional Shogi player. Despite his independence, however, he's yet to mature emotionally, and his problems continue to haunt him in his daily life. His relationship with his adoptive family is strained, and he has difficulties interacting with his fellow high school students. Meanwhile, his professional career has entered a slump. Burdened with the heavy expectations placed on him as the fifth to become pro in middle school, his wins and losses are fluctuating as his record and progression into the ranks begin to stagnate. Acquainted with Rei are the three Kawamoto sisters: Akari, Hinata, and Momo. Unlike Rei, they live happily in their modest home, which they warmly welcome Rei into as if he were one of their own. Despite his reservations about becoming too close to the family, he frequently visits, interacting with them and receiving the kind of care and affection he never quite had while under his foster home. This is the story of Rei's triumphs and failures, relationships new and old, and his growth as a person. (Source: TV Tropes)

3-gatsu no Lion has been my favourite anime of 2017 so far. It’s a simple anime about the life of a high school boy who is a professional Shogi player, But the reason this anime is so good is that it’s so much more than an anime about playing Shogi. I could relate to the characters mental struggles on a personal level and felt emotionally connected with them, almost as if they were family. The side characters in the story were very well portrayed and I felt just as much love for them, maybe even more than the main character. Each person had very unique personalty’s and were all going though their own struggles throughout the story. The struggles that the characters faced made the story feel real, like you were hearing a story that really happened.
The part I love the most about this anime is the character development which gave a sense of progress throughout the story and it was very heartwarming seeing some characters face their fears and doubts to become happier and more in touch with their thoughts and feelings. The animation and art style was drool worthy, just the way some scenes were animated created a wave of emotion within me and made me feel like I was getting an insight into how the characters really feel.
Overall I don’t have anything bad to say about this anime, it left me with a sense of calmness and a more positive look on life. Even though I am satisfied with just one season, I would defiantly watch another. <3
(P.S The music was ammmaaazzzing and fit perfectly)

The plot of the story isn’t a masterpiece, but is great.

To be honest, what really make this show so interesting to me is the way they treated depression with visual metaphor. Sometimes is very relatable, and sometimes you can ‘find beauty in depression’, sorta speak, because they show depressive phases trough art.

I think It’s a great show, a solid 4,5/5,0

3-gatsu no Lion is not a show. It’s a feeling.
I just finished feeling it and I can’t accept the fact that it’s over. It’s not just about the plot or the artwork, else I’d start on the manga right away. The colors, the movements, the sound- everything gives it the feeling of 3-gatsu no Lion. This Lion is love. Not just an anime. It’s something beyond what words can express.

A real visal treat. While keeping shogi as the central theme, the series uses visual cues to portray what it feels to be an introvert, from the difficulty to socialize, passing to the weirdness to find someone who accepts us fow who we are, to how solitude feels to us and how we cope with it while, somehow, (learn to be) being part of society. A real bliss for introverts and a great anime for those who want something king of new.
