Psycho-Pass
サイコパスJustice, and the enforcement of it, has changed. In the 22nd century, Japan enforces the Sibyl System, an objective means of determining the threat level of each citizen by examining their mental state for signs of criminal intent, known as their Psycho-Pass. Inspectors uphold the law by subjugating, often with lethal force, anyone harboring the slightest ill-will; alongside them are Enforcers, jaded Inspectors that have become latent criminals, granted relative freedom in exchange for carrying out the Inspectors' dirty work. Into this world steps Akane Tsunemori, a young woman with an honest desire to uphold justice. However, as she works alongside veteran Enforcer Shinya Kougami, she soon learns that the Sibyl System's judgments are not as perfect as her fellow Inspectors assume. With everything she has known turned on its head, Akane wrestles with the question of what justice truly is, and whether it can be upheld through the use of a system that may already be corrupt. I think this show was executed well and really brought out it ideas in the best way possible. The animation was really good expect for one episode, the OST was really good, and the story was so interesting that it made come back for more every week and the main characters were developed very well, especially Akane and it was very hard to distinguished who were the good guys and who were the bad guys since everybody was along a gray area.It had a good ending but not the best one and I wished we had know the past of Makashima since we do not have a full detail of why he was doing this and this will make this series perfect.Overall 9/10

Psycho Pass is a 22 episode anime made in late 2012. It is famous title written by the famous Urobuchi (Madoka Magica, Fate Zero) and designed by the also very famous Amano Akira (Katekyo Hitman: Reborn!). As you can always see from the writer, it is dark world and demeaning characters.
Story - 9/10
Plot - 4/5
The story takes place in the near future (22nd century) where people are judged by their crimes (or any other action) by the Sybil System, which upholds the 'Justice' in Japan, which has been famous for high technology even today. Akane Tsunemori is a new Inspector at the Police Bureau. She discovers that the justice system in the country is unique but really strangely unique once she hears how the Police work by rankings. At the start she is told that people who worked as an Inspector but later had high stress levels have to work under society's foot. The Dominator, along with the Sybil System, is a strange system that she must follow. Weird crimes go about, and it is said to be by the very same mastermind who, despite the 'perfect' system , never got caught by the name of Shogo Makishima. Kougami Shinya, Akane's partner in 'justice', is a hunting dog (a 'latent criminal' working for the police) is determined to track him down, along with Akane and the rest of the bureau.
Delivery - 5/5
It first sets out as a normal crime conflict show. Akane then knows that bringing justice is not easy as it seems. More importantly, is this truly justice? They uncover mysteries one by one. It's hard to say without spoiling, but it gets gruesome and disgusting. Shougo Makishima is truly a mastermind, something that Shinya is restricted to destroy due to his position. Akane, what she thought was a perfect world, is now just a big question as she proceeds.
Animation - 8/10
The animation is well done. The setting is fantastic. The setup angles are awesome. However quality did drop from time to time, and it also went to points where they completely lost it.
QUALITY ANIMATION FOLKS! Need to say more?
However the producers apologised, so I'll cut them some slack and bump it to 8.
Characters - 9/10
Design - 3/3
Nice looking characters and awesome design, as expected from Amano Akira's awesome characters in their works.
Personality - 3/3
The characters have interesting yet mysterious personalities in them, having so many things to let out. Shougo Makishima is the best antagonist from my times of watching anime (then again I am fairly young, and I have a long way to go). A lot of interesting traits. Kougami Shinya starts out as a mysterious person but later on has a surprise. Akane starts out as innocent but later she gets so many things in her head, but she manages to keep her head high. Others have a nice personality, too.
Development - 3/4
The development was awesome! It keeps you tight and wanting more of the character. Action in every way. However some minors didn't get enough development and had some of their actions just perfectly accepted by the series without reason, Masaoka for an example. Sion was also left like that. Yayoi's really had less than of a more 'impact'. However the rest were really nicely developed.
Sound - 10/10
OP & ED - 2/2
The OP and ED were my favourites of the year. The OPs go all groundbreaking and action packed style while the ED makes a calming factor as 'there is always happiness if you go throughout' way.
OST - 2/2
The inner OST was amazing for me. They lift up the mood well.
Voice Acting - 6/6
The Voice acting is well done. The emotions are well played out, too! They fit the characters perfectly! Kougami Shinya's may not sound like it at first, but later on it'll fit his personality perfectly.
Enjoyment - 10/10
I enjoyed every second of it. The action, the mysteries, the OST, the characters! what is not to love about it? If you're me, you'll enjoy it. If you love action, mystery, crime and utopia-dystopia, you are gonna love this!
Overall - 9/10

Usually people who look at the title of this anime think that it has to do with some type of horror. Rest assured this series is something that is beyond horror and which would not only make you think about how we in reality are living our lives but also this show will leave a really great impact on your heart. (Simply means that this show is outstanding!)Psycho Pass is series that is about law enforcement and control in society. Although this type of control is Sci-Fi, it portrays control so greatly with how things work in the 21st Century that its actually scary and thought provoking We are citizens of a society which is being controlled by a system and we refer to that system as the government which enforces the "laws" towards people making our lives seem like a Panopticon. If you are like me who likes authors like Foucault, O'Brien and Seaman and Jermey Benthem and are a hugely interested in how society works, this show has all that to offer to a certain degree of truth which you have to find if you are willing to look for it. I am not going to explain what the series is and the cast of characters because each one of them is explained greatly in the show and I would let that do the showing/talking for you. Like all stories there is a protagonist and an antagonist. One is evil and one is good. But you will feel like siding with the evil person at some point of the story because his ends justify his means. You will be pleased none the less.It starts slowly but by the end of the episode if you are not shocked/surprised how things escalate then I'm not too sure you will be interested, unless you are willing to give it time.I know this isn't a review but I wanted to give an overview about how the series works. This is R rated which means that you should have knowledge about law enforcement and good vocabulary to some extent.I hope you like this and enjoy the show as much as I did and I will probably watch it again when the Blu-Ray comes out :D

I absolutely am in love with the characters and storyline. The character development is perfect and a great example is the main female character, who evolved from a naive girl to an experience inspector in a fluid motion through the series. The enemy is one-of-the-kind, the viewers could sympathize with him. The animation was perfect (up to certain episodes but they have corrected it) and soundtrack is amazing. It might be gory and bloody for some viewers, but it is worth every single second.
Another thing is Urobuchi Gen does not think twice of killing a main character or two, which I respect and enjoy a lot.

I'll keep this review short. :D
A very interesting and amazing storyline, beautiful animation, excellent music, and one of the best anime of 2012! I really enjoyed this one. The pacing is slow, but it's worth the wait, so definitely give it a shot!

Animation - 10/10
Sound - 10/10

Review out of 100. 35 for Story, 35 for Characters, 15 for Sound, and 15 for AnimationStory: (33/35) Really good dystopian story that knows how to separate itself from the pact. Characters: (29/35) Good Main Character, Villain, and a Heroine who develops a lot throughout the story. Sadly, the side characters aren't as memorable. Sound: (14/15) Really well done soundtrack, good openings and a great use of techno. Animation: (13/15) Nicely done, good fight scenes, very fluid, but bad character designs. Overall: (89/100)I really enjoyed Psycho Pass (from now on it'll be called PP), mainly because it reminded me of all the good things about a couple of movies I saw this year. The plot of PP reminds me a lot of Minority Report and Equilibrium. The similarities between the shows are that each one has a set system in place that strives to become a crimeless utopia of sorts, but they aren't without limitations. Also, all three take place in a futuristic setting, and PP in particular has a pretty original setting. Of the three I felt PP has the most believable story, as the others revolve around seeing the future and taking away emotions (not very likely). The show explains the pros and cons of having this kind of system in place, and expands upon that. It doesn't tell you whether a system that limits human freedom but basically stops crime is right or wrong, and leaves these thoughts to you. I like it when a series doesn't force their opinions down my throat yet still makes me thing about the story at hand. One downside is that this kind of story isn't 100% original, as there are tons of similarities with other shows (not just the two I mentioned). The show also likes to quote famous works of literature, which to me makes it sound like it's trying too hard to be smart. (33/35)The characters in PP aren't all that interesting. When I first seen the cast I immediately thought Cowboy Bebop for some of the characters. That would be a good thing, but these characters lack the charisma of the Bebop crew. None of the characters are particularly interesting aside from maybe Kogami. The problem is these characters aren't very interesting. Some crime shows counter this by making them more laid back, but of they are too laid back that can also be a problem (they are saving lives after all). On the bright side, the show has a great antagonist in the form of Makishima Shougo, and Kogami is also very cool. One character I had a problem with for majority of the series is Akane, who didn't seem right for this job at all. Thankfully, she got some great character development by the end and was a real treat to watch in the final episodes. (29/35)The production values for this show are generally favorable. The score is very good, particularly both opening songs. The tracks fit each scene great, with some having your normal music, while others having some good techno music (really fitting with the sci fi elements). (14/15) The fights are very nicely choreographed, and the animation is very fluid. Sadly, the character designs are a big let down, and can be really annoying in the first part of the show. (13/15)This was one great show, and one of my favorites from 2012 (of what I have seen so far). The show excelled in pretty much every category, except in the cast and character designs department. This is one 2012 show you don't want to miss. (89/100)

This review comes minutes after finishing the last episode. I highly recommend this anime to anyone, as long as they're ok with darker and more violent themes. The reason why is because this is one of the few anime that breaks away from the pack of anime and tries to be different not for the sake of being different but to challenge the viewer to ask questions about society and about themselves. Think of Minority Report and Law and Order: Special Victims Unit combined into one show.It attempts to ask serious questions, and hence stays "dark" the whole time. This isn't like other anime that attempt to move from comedy to dark serious subjects and then back again. Rather it asks you a serious question, and never gives you a break, never lets up with a singular focus. Hopefully by the end of the anime, you'll at least know what those questions are.For me those questions are how far am I willing to sacrifice privacy for protection. What makes something criminal? Would it be fair if I was judged by a psycho-scan to determine what job would I be happy with? That would tell me if I was prone to being a criminal before doing anything criminal? Would I be the detective or the criminal in this anime? This anime is so relevant in today's world of UAV's, cameras, cyber attacks, mass shootings, unrest, how we collect evidence and prosecute terrorists and even gun laws.Personally, I've never had any movie or animation cause me to shake in rage but this anime did. I know many others in the forum felt the same way. Anger, rage, helplessness, a thirst for vengeance. The crimes in this show are dark, repulsive, like nails on a chalkboard that make you turn your head away. Yet they do so to demonstrate to the viewer unmistakably that a crime has been done. The question then, is how far are we willing to go to stop it. The anime is thought-provoking, philosophical, and relevant to today. That's a quality of anime that makes this a 10 in all respects. Some might rate the characters lower maybe because of Akane but I think having a really cute character might've taken away from the tone of this anime. I think her character design fits with the mood of this anime as well as the personality the writer was going for. In the last few episodes, I think her personality and character development shined the most with how she looks. The music was amazing and I've grown quite fond of the opening and closing themes.Overall, this is an anime that can't be ignored. Watch it just because of what it tries to do and discover what you question. If you know the answer right away, then perhaps this anime isn't for you but for those that don't even know the question, this anime is invaluable.

At first it was hard for me to understand all this hype about Psycho-Pass. All I read was the synopsis, that it was a set in a dystopian society where one's psyche can be instantaneously and (supposedly) accurately measured via their "Psycho-Pass coefficient". Sure it sounded interesting, but was it something to be this worked up about? After only an episode, I had reached my answer. Yes. This anime is arguably one of my favorites with a great mix of action, lovable characters, a fast-paced story-line and some shocking plot-twists.
Let's start off with the story. Based on the opening scene, you know this will end up to be an exciting ride. The setting of the near future is perfect for this--humans may actually end up much like the city in Psycho-Pass in the future. The first few episodes seem, at first, a bit episodic, much like Jigoku Shoujo or Hayate no Gotoku. After a few episodes though, the storyline begins to emerge and the main antagonist--Makishima Shougo--can be seen working the strings. The story-line is engaging and full of rich dialogue and explanation--whatever seems questionable at first will be explain in the future. Through the many episodes, the faults of this "Sybil System" can be seen, and the dystopian atmosphere and themes as well as some moral themes can be seen, and all of this is masterfully woven into the story. And although Psycho-Pass is mostly full of action and mystery, there are those occasional scenes with mainly dialogue between characters and a few touching moments here and there.
Next is the animation and sound. All of the fighting and chasing scenes are wonderfully animated and the music fits perfectly. The body movements are swift and accurate and fun to watch. The character designs fit perfectly--Makishima looks friggin evil and calculating and sly, and Shinya looks like the guy that can take someone like him down. Not one scene is ugly, and the landscape, regardless of where it is set, is always beautifully drawn and animated. As with the sound, each main scene is set to a fitting soundtrack, which is perfectly orchestrated to go with the scene. And might I say, if you listen to the soundtrack, it actually gets your blood pumping.
Finally we get to the characters. Every major character has some sort of backstory and is wonderfully developed. The main protagonist is Tsunemori Akane, the new Inspector of Unit One. She begins as a sort of meek and unsure person--the type that just sits in the background. But after a few episodes you begin to see that she has a backbone, and quite a strong one too. The development she receives is excellent, and really shows how strong and clever of a person she really is. Then we have Kougami Shinya, Enforcer. He has a sharp and calculating mind, and a body of a fighter to go with it. He's determined and dead-set to accomplishing his goal of tracking down the antagonist, Makishima Shougo. A tough character overall, he's one of my favorites. The rest of the Enforcers are also wonderfully developed, although I do wish I knew more about them, and that the relationships between Ginoza and everyone else could be furthered. And then we have Makishima Shougo, the most evil individual I've seen in an anime. Cold and calculating, he's almost exactly like Shinya, only that his actions oppose his. I grew to hate him over the series due to how evil this guy is, and the things he does to people are disgusting. I wish I had more of a backstory on him though, and I feel like he's a bit underdeveloped.
Overall, Psycho-Pass will take you on an exciting ride through mystery after mystery, slowly unraveling the underside of the Sybil System and its inner workings. With masterful storycrafting and intense characters, this anime is a must see.
