SHIMONETA: A Boring World Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Doesn't Exist

下ネタという概念が存在しない退屈な世界

With the introduction of strict new morality laws, Japan has become a nation cleansed of all that is obscene and impure. By monitoring citizens using special devices worn around their necks, authorities have taken extreme measures to ensure that society remains chaste. In this world of sexual suppression, Tanukichi Okuma—son of an infamous terrorist who opposed the chastity laws—has just entered high school, offering his help to the student council in order to get close to president Anna Nishikinomiya, his childhood friend and crush. Little does he know that the vice president Ayame Kajou has a secret identity: Blue Snow, a masked criminal dedicated to spreading lewd material amongst the sheltered public—and Tanukichi has caught the girl's interest due to his father's notoriety. Soon, Tanukichi is dragged into joining her organization called SOX, where he is forced to spread obscene propaganda, helping to launch an assault against the government's oppressive rule. With their school set as the first point of attack, Tanukichi will have to do the unthinkable when he realizes that their primary target is the person he admires most. (Source: MAL)

Immature. Lewd. Low-brow. Predictable.
You could call Shimoneta all these things and you wouldn't be wrong. But there is an underlying complexity to this.

Let's start from the beginning:
Shimoneta takes place ten years in the future where legislation has been passed to illegalize all pornographic material and profanity to promote morality.You do have to kind of suspend your disbelief for a bit to let that premise to sink in. But once you do, you see what problems that would bring.

Early on the anime demonstrates the dangers of having pubescent teenagers who are uneducated to sex.

False information gets spread and children have no way of coping with their urges. Not only that but "erotic terrorist" organizations begin popping up in protest. Most are peaceful but there are many who aren't.

We follow S.O.X. a newly formed organization made up of a daughter of an arrested politician who enjoys dirty jokes, the son of an "erotic terrorist" who was arrest about a decade before the events of the show and an prodigal artist student who feels like she has been limited by her inability to draw the human body. Their usual operations consist of distributing pornographic material, yelling swear words and drawing depictions of genitalia.

Throughout the latter half of the show they make a heavy emphasis on the difference between peaceful protests and violent uprisings. Which seems to be the true core of the story.

Also I would have a hard time believing you aren't here because of the "love nectar" meme so let me summarize that for you. The daughter of the politician who passed these laws is the Student Council President of the school the protagonists attend. Naturally she like all of the other children have no information whatsoever on the nature of sexual intercourse. So when she begins having feelings for the main protagonist she begins producing vaginal lubrication (a.k.a. Pussy Juice) which is normal for a young teenager. But she doesn't understand what it is so she calls it her "love nectar".

I highly recommend this show.

One of the funniest anime I have ever seen!  The characters in the show are just amazing, not just the main characters but the supporting characters are as well. This anime had me laughing so hard and gave me so many moments I will never forget.  Also a extra bonus was reading the comments section after a episode... just priceless.  So many laughs from people responses to WTF  they just saw.  10/10 LOVE IT!

Really lewd and really fun. I taught it was gonna be a stupid show with a bunch of unfunny sex jokes, but its actually a smart and provocative show that pokes fun at todays society. The jokes are on point and Anna senpai is best girl for sure this season.

Erotic terrorism, sexual contraband, and the unexplainable feelings of youth. Shimoneta exists in a near future world where Japan's given everyone a cell phone that's permanently strapped to your wrist and monitors for illicit activity at all times, leading to a country that has the "healthiest" public morals in the world. It's like if the NSA had access to a sexual discipline squad that systematically destroyed any erotic material it could find. And just as having a gynophobic protagonist means a harem just waiting to happen, it's obviously going to be full of dirty jokes. Hell, every cover picture hilariously telegraphs what the series is like. But underneath all that shine, is there something else there? With how ridiculous the situations in this anime are, you can't help but feel like it's trying to say something about that. After all, a world where the concept of dirty jokes doesn't exist is boring, right?

Right. Such a world is boring, but Shimoneta is anything but. The story revolves around an erotic terrorist organization named SOX that fights against the oppressive world where one cannot tell dirty jokes. They spread information on sex to the ignorant high school students and fight to protect stray erotica that hasn't been destroyed by the government yet. In terms of episodes, it's a continuous timeline of events without much of an overarching narrative until the last couple of episodes, which are an arc. The writing is pretty good, with the dirty jokes and jabs spicing up the dialogue. It's legitimately funny at times and can even be emotional at others. I know. It's weird how an anime about streaking terrorists can give you feels. Episodes are fast paced and are always over before you know it, leaving you want more.

The setting is fascinating because it's the extreme of Japan's current attitude about sex being immoral, which resonates clearly overseas as well. Shimoneta works well because it's gratuitously sexual; that's the point. In the same way that the members of SOX spread their erotic message, Shimoneta does so as well. There were points at which even I had to gasp out loud because of what was happening. Even if you're expecting something, it still manages to catch you off guard, especially considering it's not a flat-out hentai. At the end of the series, I definitely felt like I'd watch another 12 episodes without hesitation.

Okuma Tanukichi plays the role of the main protagonist, his father being a famous ero terrorist, or "ero-rist," who is still in prison for his opposition to the law that prohibited material deemed inappropriate. He's your everyday straightman, playing the role of both the viewer and sanity amongst all the other characters.

Kajou Ayame is the leader of SOX, dragging Tanukichi along on her attempts at educating her peers on the mysteries of sex. She has the unique privilege of having a number she can call to block her monitor for up to 4 minutes a day, meaning she's the only one who can whip out dirty language without a euphemism. Not that she doesn't also use plenty of euphemisms. Coming along with them is a myriad of other characters who are just as vibrant and colorful, leading to a series that is an absolute joy to watch. There's never a dull moment because at all times, someone is doing something. Specifically, Anna Nishikinomiya. If that sounds familiar or even if it doesn't, the image below might clear it up.

This line is so ridiculous, it instantly propelled her to meme status. Anna is the daughter of the legislator who pushed the illicit behavior ban through, meaning she's supposed to be the epitome of purity. Supposed to be. In a twist of dramatic irony, Anna is the character who exhibits the most explicit sexual activity in the entire series, under the impression that it's how one expresses their love for another. Her ignorance as to how love works is the direct cause of her explicit activities that include but are not limited to stalking her love interest, smelling his underwear, forcing herself on him on more than one occasion, and, of course, mixing her "love nectar" into his cookies. Whether it's meant to be a simple irony or an actual point about how sheltering someone too much can lead to ignorance as to how to healthily express their feelings, I can't tell. I just don't think I'm smart enough to answer that question. But I'll try to anyway; look further down for that.

I'll briefly touch on sound before I move on to whether or not I think it's satire or not. The character voices are excellently fitting, with Tanukichi's being very normal and reasonable sounding, while Ayame's ranges from very calm and collected to energetic in a second's notice. Japanese voice acting always tends to be pretty good, especially when compared to the dubs that follow. So no complaints there. The music is absolutely fantastic. The opening and ending are both incredibly catchy. The ending especially makes you want to dance along. Which I did, of course. Because no one could see me making a fool of myself. Hopefully. Other than that, the background music is just as quality, elevating the series to an even higher level. Everything just gives a sense of high quality and polish that you rarely see due to the sheer cost.

The animation is similarly top notch, having a sense of vibrancy and energy you'd expect from a well known studio like JC Staff. If they don't sound familiar, they're incredibly well known for shows like Revolutionary Girl Utena and Azumanga Daioh. The anime is beautifully put together and the characters really come alive through the vigorous motions that's conveyed by the animation. A lot of time and care went into making Shimoneta, and it shows.

So now it's time for the elephant in the room. Is Shimoneta satire or simply a clever way to pushing the censor envelope? To start, I want to make it clear that I don't know too much about Japanese social structure, but I'm going to work off of what I know. What I do know is that it's either very clever or very very lucky. The material presented in the show is almost like a deterrent for censorship in and of itself. How can one pull a piece for being too graphic if it's literally about how hiding content about sexuality for being too graphic is bad. Indeed, the often extreme nature of the series shows that it's entirely aware of what it can do and uses that to its advantage. The question is if the author of the original light novel intended for it to be a critical piece on the strict moral standards of Japanese society being too restricting and conservative for the new generation or if it was just meant to cleverly use sex to sell a product. On top of that, does the author's intent really matter in that case? If it causes something to happen, does the author's intent change that? For instance, the author of Jaws regretted writing his novel due to the mass panic and shark-phobia it caused. Shimoneta is a fantastic subversion of Japan's strict rules on sexuality and graphic content. Not only that, it portrays a group of high schoolers as the protagonists, fighting against the adults who made a boring world where dirty jokes do not exist. It resonates well with a younger generation that doesn't have the same ideas about sexuality and morality that the older generation does. This is something that, I feel, resonates across cultures because it's a relevant problem here in the US as well. Speaking of cross-cultural problems, Shimoneta also subverts gender roles in an interesting way. Ayame speaks and gestures explicitly, Otome Saotome becomes a fujoshi, and Hyouka Fuwa collects and researches insects in order to figure out how reproduction works. All in all, they're not exactly model examples of what a girl should be, according to Japanese gender roles. There's a fascinating article about whether or not the Magical Girl Genre is empowerment or reinforcement of traditional gender roles that I'll link here. Other than that I don't want to get too deep into the topic because I'm in over my head here. Moving on from that, there's a specific scene in the last couple of episodes where characters confess their love and it's surprisingly touching. It's a moment that slows the pace of the series and has a real moment of human connection that is highlighted by the fact that it's not as extreme. If anything, the scene can be considered gentle. And it reminds the audience why they're fighting. They're fighting for a world where people don't need to be ashamed of their sexuality. They're fighting for a world where people can make dirty jokes and fall in love and not have to be ashamed of any of it. I think it resonates with me the same reason that science fiction does. It says something that sticks out because of the strange surroundings. Where in sci-fi it's human stories taking place in weird locations that highlight them, Shimoneta puts the spotlight on this relationship amongst all of its extremely suggestive material. That might be giving it too much credit, but that's a gamble I'm willing to take.

So, in the end, what do I think? I think it functions as an effective piece of satire, considering it's subject material and the way it handles it. Of course, effective or not depends on whether it makes people think, but it definitely made me think. And, overall, I enjoyed watching it a ton and would love to watch more.

So, if you stuck around this long: Thanks. And also why did you do that.

I never thought that this anime would really hit big -- not after I saw the first episode. It's not like any other ecchis or comedies! This has that spark that turns you into craving for more episodes and hoping for more seasons. Its lewdness won't make you worry if someone's watching your computer screen from afar. It's an anime you could even watch with your SO. It's a perfect combination of a comedy!

sarah.koch - 2015-08-28 03:44:06

Just a top class dirty comedy where you can enjoy the sheer hilarity of awkward situations and ignorance! Must watch XD

lindsey.beatty - 2015-08-08 22:35:22

Are you feeling bored? Have you ever had a thought about changing the world?

Watch this, it will change your mind.

Have watched 6 epis, amazing and way too entertaining.

 EVERYONE MUST SEE IT. You won't regret it!!

madilyn66 - 2015-07-28 06:48:26

Ah yes, Shimoneta.

If I had to relate it to an anime, it'd be Seitokai Yakuindomo, because of the endless stream of sex jokes each show provides, but that's pretty much where the similarities cease.

// PLOT

The main difference between Shimoneta and SYD is that Shimoneta actually has a plot, and a pretty darn well-executed one too. Japan's public moral committee outlawed anything and everything sexual, and it's treated as if it's a crime to say the word p*ssy or to draw two people going at it. There's also a little bit of romance and dramatic irony involved between the main character and his crush.

// ANIMATION

The animation is pretty on-point. It's J.C. Staff, so they've got everything perfect, from blushing to drooling, from lewd motions to drawing lewd pictures, everything is fluid and great to look at.

// SOUND

The soundtrack to the show is pretty interesting. I remember hearing some "ba-ba shoobidy-bop" kinda song in the background of the first episode, and I knew that the show's soundtrack wouldn't disappoint. The OP seems to be intentionally bad, and the ED is extremely, extremely catchy.

// CHARACTERS

Despite having such a bizarre plot, the show still manages to create some very memorable characters with varying personalities that are all understandable but at the same time fresh and new. The main character, Tanukichi, is pretty simple, he loves the pure-hearted senpai of his dreams, and follows her to her high school in order to confess his love or whatever. Then there's the pure-hearted girl herself, Anna, who knows absolutely nothing about sex. In fact, nobody really does. Anna is the president of the student council of this high school, and it's known as the school with the best morals in all of Japan. And finally, Ayame, who is the vice president of the student council. However, Ayame is secretly a terrorist, who goes around throwing lewd pictures everywhere wearing nothing but a sheet and panties. On her face.

Those are the main three characters, but of course, there are plenty more, such as Hyouka, president of the science club, who is determined to find out how reproduction works no matter the cost, and there's Goriki, the "Gorilla", basically just a massive lump of meat who's also in the student council. Saotome is a girl who draws lewd pictures for Ayame's terrorist organization, and Kosuri is a red-haired girl who appears in the opening and is listed as a main character, but had not yet made an appearance yet (I will fix this once she does appear).

// OVERALL

This anime is ridiculously stupid. And immature. However, it's so perfectly executed and well-done, that it doesn't matter how immature or stupid it is, because it's freaking hilarious. It never gets old because it constantly introduces new characters and plot aspects, and it'll make you laugh. There's nothing better than sitting down (on a d*ldo), having a nice warm mug of p*ssy juice, and buckling up for the best anime series this season.
