Flip Flappers
フリップフラッパーズCocona, a cautious middle school girl, encounters an eccentric and headstrong girl named Papika. Together, they end up traveling to strange worlds known as Pure Illusion, where they must retrieve mysterious, amorphous fragments said to grant wishes. As Cocona and Papika gather these fragments for the Flip Flap organization, they come up against Cocona's childhood friend Yayaka, who is seeking the fragments for Flip Flap's rival, Asclepius, allegedly bent on world conquest. As both organizations collide, Cocona learns more about the world than she thought possible. (Source: Wikipedia)

Flip Flapper’s is by all intents and purposes another exploration of the world of magical girls and love. If you’ve seen something like this before, you’re treading on familiar ground but with an incredibly stylish, colourful impact to it. Similar to the vibrant colours you might’ve seen in other animes, coming into Flip Flappers, shades of well known anime’s like FLCL and Madoka Magica are present; the art is stunning and sometimes a little bit surreal, the themes can be a little adult and focus on twisted representations of love, longing and hate. What these feelings between people mean are explored through the medium of very frenetic, action packed scenes that explore a number of genres, from mecha to straight out shonen to even a little horror. Anime as a genre is explored through Flip Flapper’s, which centres on a girl called Cocona whose drifting life is suddenly enhanced by the arrival of an overly excited girl called Papika.
Flip Flapper’s has an undertone of yuri that in honesty, gets a little weird as time goes on. It’s not that the yuri aspect is bad at all really. As a lesbian myself I appreciate more content coming from anime that has the romantic element that I identify with in the background to an exciting fantasy story of sorts, as the girls explore the fantasy worlds of ‘Pure Illusion’. Without saying much though, Flip Flapper’s decides to be deep it has to go into a slightly convoluted plot point. It’s interesting and presents a concept of the adult world into a show that has dealt with these concepts but firmly through the eyes of a child. Flip Flapper’s is a joyful experience that deals at its core with love and through that, how what we see as love changes in the eye of the beholder. Our main characters and those around them grapple with if love means to hold onto someone tight because you’re afraid of letting them go and the consequences of both not letting go and letting them slide away too soon.
This review is a brief one but a high recommendation. Flip Flapper’s is a fun trip that suffers from a few simplistic cliches of anime, such as nudity that isn’t needed, a lot of ‘I like you but I don’t like you’ shenanigans and little explanation on certain things happening by just relying on the fantastical nature of the worlds the characters go to. However, these cliches didn’t overall impede my enjoyment and indeed it home to a thing I’ve felt many times; the feeling of drifting through life, afraid to make decisions out of fear of what might happen. Flip Flapper’s is joyful, energetic and thoughtful when it wants to be. Go give it a watch.

Great fun! Wish they’d pulled the ideas together a little better at the end. I’d still say it’s worth watching just for the beautiful visuals and world.

My gem of the season. While it could have been better in certain aspects, it excelled in what it did right. Definitely worth a watch.

Took one look at the synopses for the show, looked at the art style and the trailer, and I already knew this would be a show I'd love. Characters atm are very easily likable, the characters really make you care about their relationship, and in my opinion has the perfect amount of random weird stuff happening unexplained without it being annoying or tedious not even knowing what you're watching. It pains me so to know that there are only 5 episodes out atm.
