The "Hentai" Prince and the Stony Cat.

変態王子と笑わない猫。

Youto Yokodera wants to be seen in a way different from most men: as a pervert. However, his lewd actions are often misinterpreted as good intentions, and people cannot see his true nature. Upon hearing rumors of a cat statue that can banish an unwanted trait, he searches for it and prays for his façade to be removed. But each wish comes at a price: those unwelcomed traits are transferred to someone else who desires them! After realizing that vocalizing his dirty thoughts is not the best thing, Youto decides to regain his lost traits by seeking out the person who received them. Unfortunately, he was not alone in praying to the cat statue, and now he must not only fix his life, but the lives of others as well. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

Great visuals, fresh story with moderate plot twists. Very funny and entertaining.

This is one of the most exciting series of anime i have ever watched. Youto the perverted prince represented most of the guys (who are perverted minded of course(but not into lolicon)). If you are reading this review then stop here and start watching the series (Trust me, you'll be enjoying this series more than anyone else)

Too bad that they haven't completed the story...It would have been a dream coming true

HenNeko, quite a good - or almost perfect, i think - romantic anime I've ever watch since Toradora.

Story : 8/10 - Some out of logic happenings might not be necessary, somehow it kinda ruin the romantic storyline. There are also some crucial scenes spread in some episodes that you don't want to miss.

Art : 9/10 - A good, well-designed anime.

Sound : 9/10 - I don't really need to review this one, it's good.

Character : 9/10 - Doesn't have too much character, each one have his/her own unique personality. Some sudden-unexpected scenes boosts up some character's cuteness (If you're looking for kawaii girls, it's here.)

Enjoyment : 10/10 - For someone who is looking forward for romance animes, I can say I extremely enjoy this one. Caused a PADS on me in the end.

The "Hentai" Prince and the Stony Cat is a fun and adorable romcom with a touch of supernatural to the story. I don't know why they chose to put "hentai" in the English title, because that's a red flag to any normal person, unless you're aware that in Japan "hentai" just refers to a pervert - but not everyone knows much Japanese culture here. Regardless, it's not hentai, you're safe. It's just the story of a perverted dude who really wants to tell everyone about how much he wants summa that poon, and a chick that just wants to hole up her personality.

If you're considering watching Henneko, whether you should go for it or not really depends on what you're looking for. If you're looking for a really fulfilling romantic comedy with a really interesting and well-thought-out story, unique characters you can really identify with, and captivating visuals and audio, you're going to be sorely disappointed. If you've already seen J.C. Staff's masterpiece Toradora!, I can assure you that they are not replicating their success with Henneko, and you should not expect something of that caliber.

If you want a mindless romcom with some funny gags and character interactions for a quick watch, Henneko fits the bill. Speeding through this show is probably the best way to watch it, anyway.

The show really isn't a work of art - even those who love it will admit it has generic characters and a mess of a story. But like many things it can make for a good and enjoyable quick watch to take your mind off of the PADS from the last show you watched.

If you've already seen Henneko and enjoyed it, or you liked the idea but not the execution, I suggest you watch Kokoro Connect - the show has a very similar structure, but Kokoro Connect does it better with more of the romance, comedy, and drama you find in Henneko.

If you haven't seen Henneko, the review ends here for you - potential spoilers ahead.

Note: if you really don't mind, upon re-reading, the only spoilers in the story section don't really spoil anything without the context, so you can get away with reading the rest of this review.

I'll give it to you straight: Henneko had more of a focus on character interaction, and a lot of the elements to the story were just thrown in to add to that. You're probably going to see me mention Kokoro Connect in here a lot because their structure is pretty much the same - there's a supernatural element that forms some semblance of a plot but is really just there to make for more interesting comedy and drama. In Henneko, the statue of the stony cat provides the supernatural twists to the story in the form of taking something you don't want and giving it to someone who needs it, or granting wishes. Yeah, this is the type of story that's hard to explain to someone who hasn't seen it.

On top of the supernatural element that serves no plot-related purpose, the entire story is a mess. It's hard to tell exactly what it's focusing on. In the first three episodes it's about how Yokodera helps Azuki Azusa. Then it's about Tsukiko's problems with her sister (sort of) for something like four episodes, with Azusa still getting pointless screentime for some reason. Then a loli makes a random appearance in episode eight or so, and a couple episodes are dedicated to her. Then the ending finally deals with the problems Tsukiko's facing again, with time travel, because, time travel. It's hard to really tell what is trying to be accomplished, is the story about trying to return Tsukiko's expressions? Or deal with her family drama?

I found the whole deal with Yokodera giving his memories to Tsukiko and her sister in the past interesting and a little touching, but that's the only thing giving the story area points. The rest of it is just an absolute fustercluck, with a lot of things never tying in or having any relevance in the end, like the deal with Azusa and Emi. If there was a better balance between the nonsensical comedy/fanservice and the plot, and it came together nicely, I honestly think Henneko could've been a real decent show. I really think there was potential in the part about Tsukiko's family drama. But it instead was just one big jumble of plot, side-plot, and comedy/fanservice (how many times does Yokodera have to walk in on Tsukiko naked for us to get bored of that anyway though?) 2/10

Usually when I take art and animation into account I only ask that it looks good and it fits well with the mood and tone of the show. That's what makes the visuals stand out to me. And honestly, Henneko did that just fine - it had a cute and uppity art style that fit the bill for a cute and uppity show (for the most part). But I absolutely couldn't stand that style. I could see how others might find it appealing, but it just hurt me. And argh, the character design for the protagonist hurt to look at. And all we see throughout the show is Yokodera, but the fluffy style just hurt my eyes.

I actually do like the character designs of the girls though - Tsukiko pretty much won my heart, and I developed an appreciation for the look of Azusa. But everything else is fairly forgettable - a show with real great visuals that kick in during the pivotal parts of a story will usually stay in my head, but not so much with Henneko. 4/10

Just like the visuals, the audio was entirely forgettable. I didn't remember a single piece from the soundtrack that I'd want to put in here - and again, this is something that I usually remember if it was captivating. Looking back at the soundtrack on youtube, I'll admit, it barely scratched mediocre for me, although once again, like the visuals, it did suffice and fit with the show. However, there was one piece of audio that will remain with me until the day I die.

Yup, you guessed it - Fantastic Future, the catchiest OP theme since Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-Chan. Once you listen to this, your fate is sealed, and it'll stick with you forever.

As for voice acting, I won't lie, the VA for Yokodera, Yuki Kaji, did a solid job delivering his perverted personality, probably because he has experience in the area. This is the same person who voices Issei from High School DxD, but you may know him better for a non-perverted role as Eren Jaeger from Attack On Titan. The rest of the voice actors did a great job, I particularly liked Azusa's VA, and this was my first time hearing her. I'll also mention that Tsukiko was supposed to have a weak and non-expressive voice as part of the story, but that still bothered me for a main character. 4/10

Overall the entire cast of Henneko is really, really weak. Yokodera is like any dumb perverted protagonist. I've seen enough characters with the generic personalities of Azusa or Tsukushi. And Tsukiko made for a really weak lead with the story making for her being unexpressive the entire time. In the end every character wouldn't hop off of Yokodera, the semi-harem ending with Tsukiko being the main love interest. I knew right from the start that's how it would end, and I'm sure you might've predicted it too. No surprise. I've only ever found the every-girl-likes-the-protagonist format good in one anime and I haven't seen it done well since, and Henneko was no exception. They even had to make Tsukushi fall for him by having her think it was always Yokodera's twin brother she was falling for. The jokes that came from this dynamic were hardly worth it. Then they threw in a character just to be there. They shoved in loli Emi for an episode or three, because, why not? Every great fanservice filled show needs a loli.

In the beginning there was the stony cat causing Yokodera to express himself openly, Tsukiko to bottle up her expessions, and Azusa keeping herself reserved. This could've been an interesting function in the story - there was something similar in Kokoro Connect, and it definitely made for situations both comedic and dramatic - and the same thing was done in Henneko, but it was executed very poorly. In the three episodes that the drama with Azusa lasted, there were plenty of funny and dramatic scenes but they had hardly any impact.

I think the only character I really liked was Tsukiko, but I'm biased because she's absolutely adorable, and you're probably the same. The moe factor was there, and I'm a sucker for that. But looking at her from a critical standpoint she's just as bad a character as the others. 3/10

I really hate that Henneko had this convoluted storyline with it, if it was just a plotless comedy like Baka and Test I would've enjoyed it ten times more, being able to just sit back, watch, and laugh at the gags while I read the Haruhi LNs on my kindle. Either that, or it could've taken on a decent storyline with less pointless fanservice (they walk in on each other naked every other episode) and I would've been happy to give it my attention. But instead it was a really awkward mix that didn't work out well and had me trudging through each episode. You'll probably enjoy the show more for what it is if you don't think about it while you watch it, like HOTD or SAO.

If you don't like fanservice in shows that try to offer a story, you're going to hate Henneko, but if you forget about the story (which is easy to do) it's kind of fun, and I'm sure you'll find some of it extremely entertaining if you are a big fanservice lover, particularly in scenes like this gif, this one, this one, or this one. Yeah, those are all NSFW by the way.

If anything, Henneko is at least a highly GIFable show. 4/10

Henneko is a nice show for a quick watch when you're really looking for a fanservice filled romcom, with a touch of interesting story in the end. It's very poor in all areas, so I wouldn't go into it expecting much out of it. Maybe my negative review will set the bar low for you when you get around to it, and you'll be pleasantly surprised if it does turn out to speak to you. If you've already seen it I'm sure you at least got a few laughs out of it. The story is pretty cute and sweet and that's pretty much the whole theme it has going for it, which because painfully obvious the second you hear that adorable catchy OP theme. 3/10

The "Hentai" Prince and the Stony Cat follows the age old message of "Be careful what you wish for". Or to be specific "Be very, very, very, very specific in what you wish for and don't be a dickhead about it"

The "Hentai" Prince and the Stony Cat, or shortened to 'Henneko', follows Yoto Yokodera and his friends as they alter their lives by praying to the legendary stone cat god, in turn they get their wishes granted. But the cat god has something else in store for these guys. He has a lot planned for them.

This anime was to say awesome in the least. I loved every moment of it.

While an ecchi anime, it only had said ecchi when the plot actually needed it. So if you came looking for a T n A show, you best leave now.

What the show lacks in only achieving standard voice acting, it makes up with its adorable character designs, ton of jokes and don't get me started on the OP!

Long story short, it was a great show and I would watch a second season if it came out.

Let me start of by saying this 100% opinion based on my perception of the anime. With that said I don't care if you object to it. Constructive criticism is welcome. Now let's start from the beginning, literally, I loved the theme song so much that I would purposefully go back to the beginning just to hear it and start dancing in my seat. Yokedera is a high school boy who manages to maintain a misconception of him being a Good Samaritan. This becomes a problem for him because I keeps making him busier and busier when he only really wants to focus on you think, women. Desperately wanting to get rid of this facade he has he hatches an idea to wish it away after his freind tells him about a cat statue that has the power to grant wishes because it is part of the embodiment of a deity. Upon reaching the cat statue he "meets" one of the main female protagonist tsukiko. Tsukiko is there for a similar reason, to lose something they don't need. The way this cat statue works is it takes something you do not wish to possess and gives it to someone else. Now that I've given you a brief synopsis it's time to give you the actual review.First off I found it very hard to become attached to the characters. I didn't feel alot of emotional connections, I couldn't really relate to them either. I also didn't feel like they made any real revelations or significant progress. Small development though. Yet I found myself fascinated by the characters. They're all very dynamic from each other and it's worth it just to see how these characters interacting and play off of each other. How different they are from each other and the fact they keep these close relationships with each other is one of the best things about the show. For an ecchi anime it's incredibly light hearted, it's not another "i must absolutely obsess over the main character and have his cock" kind of anime. Going back to what I said about the characters being incredibly different from each other, the situations they are placed in is one of the best parts and redeeming qualities of the show. They're thrown into these sporadic and off the wall situations and its humorous to see how they'll behave and cooperate with each other. I adored the art style of the anime as well, all of the colors seemed to fade and shade perfectly. I also loved the voice acting, every voice seemed to match the character absolutely perfect in every way, to tone, pitch, appearance of the chacter to sound of the voice, to the personality of the voice itself. Possible spoilers ahead so be warned: Now for a little more gripes. There were some major holes in the story that could have been fixed with a simple wish. Magic is already a complicated thing to explain in a story but later down the rode we deal with memories and time travel. I felt like some of the perversion was overdone just a tad and could have been easily avoided if the main character could communicate properley. The story gets very confusing at times but most of it is explained in due time. The confusing parts are actually one of the main reasons you'll want to watch more of the show.

At first i didn't know weather to put this in the positive or negative section since i was unsure weather the pros outshine the cons since this show is fairly generic at times and sometimes the characters reasoning wanted me to throw my hands in the air but here I go REVIEW TIME!!

STORY:

Now before you judge the title no this show isn't entirety about fan-service and ecchi moments. Don't get me wrong there is moments but not as much as the title would make you think. It's kinda more a standard Rom/Com with a supernatural element thrown in. The story follows Yōto Yokodera a school student who is a pervert but yet he cannot express his inner self truly because his deeds are always misunderstood. He hears rumors of a stone cat on top of a hill which will grant wishes, he goes there one night with a wish to get rid of his 'facade'. He then meets a girl there called Tsukiko Tsutsukakushi who wants to not show her emotions so easily, because she was a crybaby. And the story continues on after they're wishes are granted.

The story at first seemed interesting with a girl who is emotionless on the outside but yet has emotions hidden inside yet she can't express them and a guy who can't help to shout out the first preverted thing that comes into his head. At first I thought it be a comedy about these two characters covering for eachother and steadily fall for eachother but i was wrong. The story slowly turns into a harem with our main male lead helping out other girls and their problems and they fall for him. While it isn't throw in your face it's made extremely clear at the end of the show. Pretty generic really.

Characters:

There isn't really much to talk about really since alot of them are cardboard cut out really. I mean we have guy who acts perverted but is really a nice guy, we got a shy girl and an athletic girl who isn't the brightest oh and a loli thrown in there too (Why not?). The only character i only really did like was Tsukiko since his had the appearance and tone of your standard emotionless girl but all her emotions on her face are just masked i found it funny because she talks alot and her dialog never matched her tone of voice.

Animation:

The animation was properly the best time about the show (well for me anyways). Very thing is colored very lively and bright and there's always a nice selection of color in every scene. It's not exteremly good or anything but it suits the show quite well.

As for character designs there pretty "MEH". Every character felt like a looka like of a character i already seen like the main lead looking alot like Sorata from "The Pet Girl of Sakurasou" (BTW check out that show!!)

Sound:

I found the sound department pretty weak. I can't recall any OST. I guess all i can say is the music "fitted" the scenes i guess. The opening and ending are just gernetic J-pop so there isn't really much to say really.

Enjoyment /Overall

Overall the series is fairly enjoyable with a few luaghs here and there with dramtic moments. It's not the best Rom/Com ever so i could only recommend it if you like the series and you have already have watch a good fair bit of this gerne before this ( Toradora, The Pet Girl of Sakurasou, Kokoro Connect etc).

I would properly give this show a 5-5.5/10. There's nothing outstandly bad about the show yet there's nothing outstandly good about it either. It's just pretty average. Watch if you got nothing really to watch and you like the gerne.

Fianl Score: 5.5/10

sokeefe - 2013-06-30 21:18:31

Despite the title of "Hentai Prince" the show is not an ecchi/fan service title and is really some strange supernaturalish romantic comedy. The show is about how the wishes granted by the Nekogami affect the characters and the world they live in.

The Stony cat grants a wish in a rather particular way. For instance, the main character wants to be more open with who he is so he asks the cat to take away his facade. At the same time the cat will give what it took to someone who needs it. This along with the rather unlimited power the cat has is the basis of the show and how just about all the situation evolve.

While the story is rather fresh at first and honestly, pretty funny. It goes out of hand during mid to late episodes with some questionable archs until the last couple of episodes which are heart warming and explains just about everything

This show has the benefit of having two of the most entertaining, and rather likeable leads of the season. Youto (the hentai prince), can't really talk to people, not because of being shy, but because he, after all, is a pervert and can't express himself correctly. So he wishes that the Nekogami take away his inhibition... which causes to be problematic. Tsukiko on the other hand has always relied on her emotions. I'm sure you can see where this is going. They try to help each other to regain what the cat took from them.

The show is somewhat a harem so other girls are present too. Among the most notable is Azusa, who starts out as a troubled and somewhat bullied character that looks like she might get some nice development, but unfortunately gets stuck in a rather poorly done later arch along with another character. Tsukushi (Tsukiko's older sister) is somewhat more important later on in the show, but never really gets the development she's due til the end.

Overall a lot of the characters do get significant development, but not always in the way that might be the best. For having such strong main characters the side ones range from completely annoying to average.

In the end The Hentai Prince and the Stony Cat is a show you should not pass over due to its name. It has very entertaining and endearing main characters with enough of a moe factor to keep fans watching past some of the more questionable middle parts.
