Joker Game

ジョーカー・ゲーム

With World War ll right around the corner, intelligence on other countries' social and economic situation has become a valuable asset. As a result, Japan, has established a new spy organization known as the "D Agency" to obtain this weapon. Under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Yuuki, eight agents have been assigned to infiltrate and observe some of the most powerful countries, reporting on any developments associated with the war. In order to carry out these dangerous tasks, these men have trained their bodies to survive in extreme conditions and studied numerous fields such as communications and languages. Someone made a point where it was expected that we, as viewers, still don't know their 'names' and 'identities' as they change for the rest of their life. A good enough excuse for me not remembering faces to names (I was already not good at such in the beginning).

Joker Game was a breath of fresh air. It gave me a good amount of seriousness and danger present in the world of espionage, and I was already watching a feel-good anime so this one balanced the rest out quite nicely. I got tired of shows focusing on one story arc through a whole season, so episodic variations, with a good tie-in at the end made this show truly stand out. The tie-in proved that you had to be a special sort of person to be invited into the D-Agency.

The idea of spies during peace time isn't a new one, but it was one that hadn't crossed my mind when we talked about war and the events leading up to war in shows, books, and history classes. The animation was clean (although it made it difficult to distinguish between certain characters) and the OP and EP truly fit the kind of lifestyle these men had.

Overall, the anime has a good story and it truly left me with a want to know more about the spies themselves. I added the novel to my list, enough to keep me waiting for the next installment.
