how does this japanese adult not know how to cook rice? his kid does not act like an actual human child - she’s more of a mascot in desperate need of a haircut. no idea what this boring high school girl is doing here either since she’s barely interacting with anyone. she might as well be a cardboard cutout. i was in it for the food.

Calling Sweetness and Lightning a slice of life would be incorrect. It is a slice of happiness. If you can watch it without smiling uncontrollably at Tsumugi's antics and her dad's attempts to handle her, then you likely lack empathy and work at Comcast.
There is no "real" plot line, but you won't care. The characters are the substance of the show, and they are all interesting in their own right with well fleshed out perspectives on their environments. There is an episode from Tsumugi's perspective which is absolute gold that illustrates my previous point. There is also a slight chance this show convinces you to start cooking. Not in the Food Wars sense where you want to chop food at the speed of sound, but in the actual real life cooking sense where you want to eat like a normal person.
TL;DR Vladamir Putin would smile at this show (without sadistic pleasure).

Sweetness and Lightning is an adorably light-hearted show about a father who recently lost and wife and now has to raise their daughter alone. After only the first episode of the show, you can immediately tell everything this show is about, and while it may not be for everyone, I highly recommend checking it out whenever you want a light hearted show to watch. God damn it I might be a man, but this show is honestly way too much for me sometimes. I feel like I'm actually turning into the respectable and devoted father our main character is just by watching this show.
