Wraps up what happened in the anime with another set of amazing visuals. However, does not really deliver what the anime did. Amazing nonetheless.

The Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann Movies, Gurren-hen and Lagann-hen retell the story of The Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann anime series. They cut down and condense the 27 episode anime into two movies with approximately 2 hours of run-time each.
This review will focus on the adaptation, from the series to the movies, and not on Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann in general. This means that I will mostly discuss the difference between the movies and the series. For a review of, what Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is actually all about, check out the reviews over here: Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
I will also consider the two movies as one entity and post this review on both movies, since they are essentially one story.
So whether or not you should watch these movies, very much depends on your current relation to the series. The movies removed a large amount of “filler” content. This resulted in a lot of character development being cut out. It did however also add some extra scenes and changes to some of the major plot moments.
If you have not seen the series yet, but I’m planning on doing so:
Go watch the series, first. The missing, character building, fillers really hurt the movies and the series is truly amazing. You will get much more out of it.
If you have not seen the series yet and I’m NOT planning on doing so:
If you are certain that you won’t have time to watch the series (then I very much pity you), then this is a good way of substituting it. All the major plot points and amazing scenes are there, but be aware that you will be missing out, compared to the series.
I watched and liked the series, and now I want more:
Definitely watch the movies then. Be warned, they mostly reused scenes from the series and only added a handful new ones, but I would definitely consider the additional scenes worth it. They added around 20 min to the final battle, at the very end… and it’s pure awesome. Especially if it has been a while since you watched the series, the movies will be a beautiful reminder.
I watched/dropped the series, and am hoping for something different from it:
Whelp…. Not gonna find anything, but more of the same here. It’s Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann all the way.
In the end I would conclude that the movies are a very faithful adaptation to the series. They do suffer under their shorter run time, but considering that the point was to cut down the show, that was unavoidable.
