Man, this movie was a lot better than what I was expecting. I've seen a lot (all) of the Detective Conan movies and I pretty much have a feel for its' usual ebb and flo, but this was a breath of fresh air and arguably one of the best movies in the series.
First of all, the writing in general felt a lot better than the normal standards. Characters are more witty and jokes are flown with taste. I felt that more attention to the writing was provided than the usual DC movies, which is seriously great.
A lot of the time, the DC Movies burdened with a stiff and strenuous atmosphere, where everything is riding on the wit of our Only Hope Conan. The addition of the Lupin cast in this movie provided Conan with a considerable amount of support(?), who knew that he was Shinichi (and it wasn't a Big Federal Issue) and was basically just...refreshing. The Lupin cast's presence forced Conan to share the spotlight, and in turn I think it gave every character their own chance to shine.
The music score was fun. They had music from both DC and Lupin III, and the sound effects (that were definitely of Lupin origin) were silly but didn't feel out of place.
The animation is obviously a merger of the two styles, and they did clash a bit. However, while it was a little weird at first, I got used to it rather quickly, and I don't think it took away from the story.
DC movies tend to have localization issues. Sometimes, the puzzles are Just Too Foreign for anyone who doesn't speak the language. (I'm not faulting the movies that do this, but it does take some enjoyment out of the experience.) This movie doesn't do that though, which is great, and worth noting.
Watching the previous movie is recommended because they do make references, but it's not 100% necessary. It's been over a year since I saw the other movie, so I forgot some details, and I kind of wish I rewatched that one before watching this one, but it's up to you.
I'm not the most eloquent writer, so sorry that this review is a bit sporadic. Whatever though, basically what I'm saying is this: It's a good movie, and if you like Detective Conan, you should watch it and all will be well.
