Nyaruko: Crawling With Love!

這いよれ!ニャル子さん

Mahiro Yasaka is just an ordinary high school student, until one day he is suddenly attacked by a dangerous monster. Just when everything seems to be lost, he is saved by a silver-haired girl named Nyaruko, who claims to be the shape-shifting deity Nyarlathotep from horror author H. P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos, sent by the Space Defense Agency to Earth. She explains to Mahiro that the creature chasing him was an alien called Nightgaunt, who had planned on abducting and selling him as a slave. After rescuing him from the alien, the Lovecraftian deity falls madly in love with Mahiro and forces herself into his household, much to his chagrin. Moreover, they are soon joined by two others from the fictional universe: Cthuko, a girl obsessed with Nyaruko, and Hasuta, a young boy easily mistaken for a beautiful female. Together, the three eccentric aliens protect Mahiro from the various extraterrestrial dangers that threaten both his and Earth's well-being, all the while making his life a living hell. review is short and spoiler free

Story;
10/10
Several distinct arcs a season, each bringing its own humor and references to the table. They cover everything from Eco-terrorism to video game development. Amongst the predominant anime references you will find some to plenty of classic sci-fi films, so even if you aren't a big time Otaku you will still get at least some of the references.

Animation;
8/10
Nothing special, nothing to dislike about it.

Sound;
10/10
Imagine the catchiest song you have ever heard, multiply it by the second and third catchiest, and then that number by itself again and you might be close to grasping how good the music is. The first seasons opening is my morning alarm tone.

Character;
10/10
The entire cast, main and recurring, bring something each to the table. Most are slow to be introduced so the first few episodes will have a different feel than the latter ones in terms of cast.

Enjoyment;
10/10
Great laughs all around, will not disappoint. Definitely more fun for those who will get the references.

Overall;
10/10

Lets get a few things straight before beginning this review.

#1 This is hentai. Sorta. Lotsa lack of clothing.

#2 This is cliched. All the characters can be found elsewhere.

Ok. Cool. So anyway. I personally really enjoyed this show. It's just a really good comedy. While some things about it may turn people off, like overused character types or such, it was still adorable and entertaining. The love square made me giggle, the gags and references were adorable, and all in all it made me happy. The added bonus of most characters being elder gods or something else delightfully Cthulhu is also good.

STORY

This is what made this so great, so even though i rated this low hear me out. There is no coherent plot, which lost it a few points. However, the two-three episode shorts are always done extremely well. They have some ridiculous reason usually having to do with Earthling entertainment. It always begins seeming like a normal plot (peppered generously with moments that I felt the need to talk to Kuuko about why rape is wrong) with some big scary monster doing unclear evil things and the main character thinking it's something serious, only to discover it was a hentai obsessed alien wanting to transport Earth entertainment offworld. It is never anything serious or compelling, but always damn funny. And that's what this anime is about. It's. Funny. Not anything else, and it doesn't try, and I respect it for that.

ANIMATION/SOUND

It's good. Nothing special. The voice actors are cute. The animation is good. Not much else to say.

CHARACTERS

My only complaint is that they're overused. Other than that, they're wonderfully done. There is Kuuko, whose monotone as she informs someone of their imminent violation (take as you will but the dirtier the more accurate) never ceases to be entertaining. The titular Nyarko's obsession with Mahiro and her constant schemes to make him like her are also funny, and I will vote for anyone who beats the shit out of monsters with a crowbar. And Hasuta's adorable gayness are all wonderfully done if stereotypical, and he wins my award for best Ackbar (trap for you ignorant feebs) that I have seen in a while. And in the middle of it all, the main character, Mahiro, who desperately tries to cope with the Elder Gods who have moved into his home and constantly try to partner up with him. He is also a wonderful tsundere, and seems to actually be pretty happy about his new roommates despite repeatedly stabbing them when Nyarko sexually harasses him. Also, he uses forks to kill monsters. I'm a big fan of that.

ENJOYMENT/OVERALL

I enjoyed this. A lot. It made me giggle all the time. Nyarko is just awesome. The characters are complex enough to be funny, the plot is hilariously contrived enough to really show off the gags, and it's overall well written enough to just be funny. And nothing else. Because it's a comedy. And to be honest, I'm OK with that. Just a comedy is good. It doesn't try and be anything else, but it does comedy extremely well. The gags are constant and delightful, from shouting out what button combo they're using to the addiction to Earthling entertainments (often, cough cough,m adult entertainment) The only thing barring this from getting a perfect rating from me is that some parts are overused.

COMPULSORY AMVS

This one makes the show look badass which I thought was delightful
