So Magic Kaito. Much gentleman thieving and snooping around.

I got pretty interested into the whole MK franchise once the gentleman thief himself stole the show on Detective Conan. Needless to say I got interested and started watching it....Never mind the background to this.

But overall I though MK is a pretty decent anime, without too much cliched romance, some pretty interesting actions, and characters(questionable on that one).

Overall, I would give MK a 7; it sucked a bit mainly on the character and story aspect of the show. Otherwise, I thought that the animation was decent(as expected of Gosho Aoyoma); and if you are not sick of repetitions, it is a very enjoyable shows (especially for girls).

So, looking at MK in details Story-wise: 6

Okay I need to sort of get this clear, MK is a lot like Detective Conan, both structure and story wise. So we start off with Kaito stealing stuff, and finding out that he needs to complete X-mission, which basically takes forever and looking at the rate MK's story line is progressing, it will probably not end anytime in the next 10 years, if Mr. Gosho Aoyoma wants it. Since I have watched Detective Conan for some 300 episodes or more, MK is quite repetitive, and predictable to me. So advice, don't watch DC and MK at the same time if you hate repetition.

It's certainly interesting to see how Kaito avoids getting captured, and pulling out pranks in each episode; however, without the presence of Conan, or another rivalling detective (Hakuba you are out), the initial adrenaline rush gradually dies. Hence it is really boring in this aspect.

Otherwise, there are some really enjoyable (and memorable) moments, which shows up in a lot of fanfics; but nonetheless they are a good distraction.

Animation: 9

Hands down. There's no argument that the animation is brilliant.

Character:6

Yeah a lot of my friends can tell you that I am obsessed with MK, especially the gentleman thief himself, but personally I thought the character was averaged, and somewhat copy and pasted out of detective conan itself.

Well let's have a look at it,

we have a central protagonist, Kuroba Kaitou, who looks A LOT like Shinichi from DC. we know that he's smart, mischevious, likes to pull pranks, ichthyophobic, and has a childhood friend who he may or may not have a crush on. Looking at Shinichi, he's also smart, somewhat mischevious, not ichtyophobic, and also has a childhood friend/sweetheart. As such, there is so much similarity between these two characters that Kaito can even pretend that he's Shinichi (which he has done on a variety of occasions)...what is this witchcraft???

Okay, Aoko. She's pretty much a clone of Ran, appearance-wise, except for her hair. Like Ran, she also has a crush on Kaito (and pretty obvious), gets mad at Kaito and chases him with mops, etc. After watching, I thought that she's pretty much Ran, but without as much decorum and formality that Ran has.

The other characters, Akako, and Hakuba are honestly sort of original, especially with Akako being an actual withc; but now that I'm writing a shitty review about it, Akako really reminds me of Sonoko, with the same high-pitched voice and somewhat bitchy attitude.

So ending the rambling on about characters, if you haven't watched DC, the characters will probably appear really interesting because it's still original in that aspect. However, if you HAVE watched DC, or Lupin, then the characters are somewhat bland, and quite character-typical. Enjoyment

So despite me having watched one too many DC episodes, and ranted on about DC and MK's similarity a bit too much in this review, MK is still one of the animes that I really enjoys, and have watched A LOT of times.

It's an original story, with interesting plotline and not too many traditional fanservices which I am not even going to get started (but it does have fanservice, and as Irene Adler puts it "brainy is the new sexy"---essentially, Kaito's intelligence is fanservice for me). There are incredibly intense points, and also really silly moments; but overall it is well balanced, henceforth I really enjoyed it.

AND I SHIP KAITO WITH AOKO SO FREAKING HARD

Anyway, Final words? Magic Kaito is a pretty decent anime, if you are into a not incredibly complex anime, that still has really really attractive guys (with brains) Overall:7
