This OVA series an action comedy set in an alternate universe wear 80s fashion and sci-fi technology coexist.
The series has a larger emphasis on action sequences and fleshing out the story line of each episode than it does on the character interactions and comedy. However, the relationship between its genres doesn't feel forced.
The series has fun with itself. Rock and roll accompany intense chase scenes between manly cyborgs and fashionable girls who have the entire world's fate in their hands. So while the story seems silly, it manages to be entertaining. The cast is memorable despite being incredibly shallow. The main character comes off as a mary sue but this feels intentional. The series wants the audience to cheer her on the save the day and know that she'll always find her way out of sticky situations. It feels like breath of fresh air compared to some of heavy, dark and gritty sci-fi from the around the same time.
The fact that the main cast is American adds some nice flavor to this anime. Nice touches like car details and movie advertisements in the background give it a more western vibe and help it stand out from other anime.
Each episode ultimately leaves you on a high note, and looking fondly back on the joy ride. Check this out if you're in the mood for some light sci-fi that doesn't want to be taken too seriously.
