I like the new Macross, but I also understand the hate by the older Macross fans. Macross has changed. Idols are popular now days, so the producers decided to go that way.

Macross Delta is a prime example of a creator losing all passion for his art, which Shoji Kawamori has been very vocal about. It's not only the worst Macross series, which could still hold some regard for quality, but it's just not good enough to warrant watching in the first place. That's hard for me to say because there's actually a lot I like about Macross Delta, but it did eventually only get more and more disappointing as time went on.
This story is a rehash of Frontier, plain and simple. Walküre are Ranka and Sheryl. Mikumo is the Vajra Queen. Roid is Grace O'Conner. A family heirloom in the form of a fold quart saves the protagonist. And the end goal is to use fold waves to mind control all life into a forced and false peaceful existence.
Anyone and anything else is a question ignored and forgotten about. Very little conflicts are resolved between the characters and the warring factions. You wouldn't think to call these MacGuffins, but that's how the show treats them. Unless you're Mirage, in which case you are so out of place you'd be like a ficus in the desert. And the canon couple don't even get a satisfactory moment together as unresolved drama between them is left completely up in the air.
My problems with the first half mainly focus on Hayate and his consistent, undeserved special treatment just because he is the main character.
^ Excuse me.
But the second half is even worse for everyone involved as big revelations are treated as irrelevant with reactions such as
or
No one's affected by anything. And that's the biggest hit to this series. But expect loads of filler, recycled animation, and down right dumb decisions to be present as well.
^ Since when was that ever what this is fucking about?
What are the positives? What could possibly make the show worth it if you're that diehard of a Macross fan? Four things: Freyja, the theme, the setting, and the music.
Freyja Wion is the main heroine for this series. She's great because she and the theme basically go hand in hand.
Macross Delta has a distinct message about life being too short to let it pass you by, and Freyja embodies this literally. She comes equipped with a tragic past, and her home planet is run by isolationist assholes, but she lets nothing stop her from joining Walküre and trying to reach the galaxy through song in her short lifespan. She's effective because her circumstances earn her empathy and because she actually fucking cares about what she's doing. On top of that, her depth shows on her many faces and her cute quirk.
^ Her laugh is perfect, you shut the fuck up.
The setting is neat too. For one, I love all things water...
But most importantly, we have finally gotten humanity out of the seemingly never ending space travel to colonize other planets. It's been eight years since Frontier, and we are introduced to a huge plethora of new races and planets to explore and it's loads of fun.
Also, the music is a step up here too. It's some of the best we've ever gotten in terms of idol music and epic BGMs. To be frank, Yoko Kanno didn't do it for me on either front of Plus's or Frontier's music, but this makes up for it. I don't believe SoundCloud embeds here on the review pages, so please know this is too avoid spoilers from extracted scenes on YouTube.

And there you have it. If Delta still seems worth it enough to you, give it a shot, but only if you're an experienced Macross watcher. I give it a 5/10 for being basic middle ground that gets a lot right and wrong, but a 6/10 here because my calculator says so. Actually it probably gets more wrong than right, but that's just how much I liked what was good and was willing to stick with it.

I gave this show a fair 3 episodes before I decided to drop it.
Love the concept of the VF mechas. They are very functional and look great. The animation and sound is good too.
The main character (Hayate), while operating a mobile suit likes to dance and get his groove on which means his piloting skills reflect mobility and agility. He runs into a stow away girl (Freyja) who happens to sing when she is happy or scared because her sole dream is to be a part of Walkrue (a team of girls that sing and bring out magic from within to protect the galaxy from aliens that randomly gets sick and starts aggressively attacking everyone in their sights). Her singing brings out the best in the main character's dancing and flying. Whats weird is that a heart accessory is connected to her hair bang that lives her hair up and glows when she is happy.
I understand that the singing is a big part of jpop idol culture, but it is just too much singing for me. Maybe they are trying too hard to promote watchers to buy the OST, dance along, and perhaps go see future concerts. I did not expect singing in pretty much every battle sequence. I was expecting mech battles, a better story plot, and a song or two in the end for unity and prosperity after the battle.
Watching Macross Frontier after this review. It is better in my opinion. Started out the same, girl in trouble, main character drop into a VF to save her..
