Denki-gai

デンキ街の本屋さん

Umio is a shy kid who just started his part time job at a manga store smack dab in the middle of the city. But his lifestyle isn't as glamorous as the neon lights that illuminate the city. Umio's closest friends are his co-workers who are all unique characters, to say the least, and although they're nice people, they have their quirks. They are a tight knit group of friends, have nicknames for each other and spend their weekends inside, sheltered from the extravagant scene happening on the outside. (Source: MU)

Funny. Interesting characters. Set in a manga shop. Very much worth the watch. One of my favorites of last season.

Story - 7

Won't blow you out of the water especially since it is a slice of life anime at heart. The comedy does make you chuckle or laugh lightly. They often make fun/light of the otaku culture and if you are new to anime I would suggest having a good number of other shows under your belt. You will have questions and won't be able to enjoy the show as much if you don't understand some of the references. Still if you watch it without much knowledge you should still enjoy it.

Animation - 8

Round face animation, cute animation nice to look at but not something that will have you saying how beautiful. Might have you saying Moe~ since the characters are drawn to appeal to certain moe~ characterizations.

Sound - 6

Light background music true to the type of music that plays in slice of life anime

Character - 9

Character and character relationship driven show. All the characters are pretty much otakus. The relationships to me seemed forced at times but at least it isn't a harem type of situation where they all like only one guy and every other guys is related to side kick status.

Enjoyment - 9

You will enjoy this anime. If you enjoy slice of life comedy then this is for you. Even if you don't like slice of life comedy it should still be enjoyable.

Overall

If you like darker theme shows, then not for you. If you are interested in heavy drama/romance then not for you. Denki is what it is, a slice of life comedy that makes light of otaku culture. The story/characters aren't overwhelming or complex but still enjoyable. Now there is moe~ in this anime but it isn't a bad thing since it is an otaku backdrop(they do work in anime goods store). Anyways have fun and enjoy!!

Since thisis based solely on my opinions of the show and I'm not an expert or specialistin the area, I would call this a commentary rather than a review. Also, becauseit is my first time writing something like this, minor spoilers and misjudgmentsare expected.

I will begin by stating how I enjoyed Denki-Gai no Honya-san. Aftergetting to know about the show and reading a bit about it, I sincerely did notexpect much from Denki-Gai. As time went by and episodes kept airing, I beganto like it more and ended up being a solid, short one season anime.

Story - 5
I believe that the story of Denki-Gai was quite simple. Definitely not thestrong point of the show. Although that doesn't mean it was bad.
What I took from every week's episode was that the story was about the peoplewho worked at the bookstore, how the bookstore itself worked and it gave me abit of information about the manga industry in Japan. More specifically, about"doujinshi", a word I heard a couple of times but had no idea what itactually meant.
There were also references to other anime which were neat, but the one which takes the cake, in my opinion, (SPOILER ALERT) is the one inthe last episode, in which the characters cosplayed other characters from differentshows voiced by the same VA. It's a shame that I only recognised the plebiest one, Kantoku as Kirito from SAO(Matsuoka Yoshitsugu).

Animation and Art Style - 6

Animation was pretty much basic. Nothing too fancy and detailed, but no major faults. The art was cute and simple, butin hindsight, I felt that it was appropriate to the anime.

Sound - 6

I found the OP and the ED songs enjoyable and quite cheerful. Other than thatthere was nothing about sound that stood out for me, except for, the (SPOILERALERT) "Boys don't hate underwear" voice.

Characters - 7

With Denki-Gai no Honya-san you don't get a lot of characters overall. What youdo get are quite a few characters very relevant (Hio-tan, Umio, Sensei,Kantoku, Fu Girl, Kameko and Sommelier), two not so relevant, which stillmatter (G-Men and Tsumorin) and finally the rest, which I feel that are onlythere to make the store look legitimate and provide some extra laughs, forexample, the manager.
My opinion is that the character development is acceptable. You get to knowmore about the characters' past and you see, in some, them changing a littlebit gradually.
I would just like to add that I kept thinking that Umio was being ignoredmidway and at the end of the anime, but with the last episode, that"issue" was fixed. Also the VA for Sommelier should receive anaward for best VA of 2014 because those lines were just class!

Enjoyment - 8

This is where, in my opinion, the show shined. It was so entertaining, Istarted laughing in the beginning and would only stop after the episode ended.
Needless to say that was always happy to know it was Thursday and I would beable to see a new episode of Denki-Gai.

All in all, for me, this show was the silly comedy I expected. No matter how I was feelingbefore watching an episode, I always felt much better after watching it. Theanime certainly gave me a lot of smiles while it was airing.

tl;dr: Satisfying silly comedy and characters, short and enjoyable anime;  Tomita Takahiro best VA 2014. (kek)

Completely under-rated. The comedy is just so spot on and unpredictable, while other moments the romance aspect is so touching and real. You end up feeling something for all the main characters and are rooting for all of them! Some might think it's just another romcom, but the humor is a good mix between original, dirty, but still laugh out loud funny. I hope they do another season, otherwise I'm reading the manga since it didn't have an exact ending. Highly reccomend for people who want to watch a funny slice of life without it being too overdone with some cute romance moments.

greenholt.raina - 2014-10-24 04:05:09

A comedy show that has fantastic characters with no direction whatsoever. If you're looking for deep plot turn around now, if you are looking to laugh your ass off watching a loli girl with pigtails beat a zombie with a baseball bat then you're in the right place.

Story - 7/10

While there is no real goal in the story or antagonist to defeat, it's plot is definitely enough for the genre.

Animation - 8/10

Nothing that will blow your mind but not terrible by any means.

Sound - 7/10

Nothing special here.

Characters - 9/10

While they lack in back story it's definitely the characters that will make you love this show. Their actions and interactions are ridiculous and keep the show extremely entertaining.

Enjoyment & Overall Rating - 10/10

A comedy that I look forward to every week.
