Maid Sama!

会長はメイド様!

Being the first female student council president isn't easy, especially when your school just transitioned from an all boys high school to a co-ed one. Aptly nicknamed "Demon President" by the boys for her strict disciplinary style, Misaki Ayuzawa is not afraid to use her mastery of Aikido techniques to cast judgment onto the hordes of misbehaving boys and defend the girls at Seika High School. Yet even the perfect Ayuzawa has an embarrassing secret—she works part-time as a maid at a maid café to help her struggling family pay the bills. She has managed to keep her job hidden from her fellow students and maintained her flawless image as a stellar student until one day, Takumi Usui, the most popular boy in school, walks into the maid café. He could destroy her reputation with her secret... or he could twist the student council president around his little finger and use her secret as an opportunity to get closer to her. There are many reasons to dislike maid-sama there is an illness that bogs it down, a.k.a uninteresting male characters. Not only are the males in this anime completely unlikable do to the petty and disrespectful nature of all of them, but they also manage to interrupt the more complex females by making the moral of the story about them. In one episode there is a conflict between the boys of her class and the main heroine and the main heroine gives valid reasons against doing what the guys want but in the end she is somehow in the wrong, despite not five minutes earlier being proven that the guys will abuse any power given to them. It seems that each episode will always have a, because were guys we are right, attitude and a male lead that is a mary-sue. I liked the main heroine but hated the world around her.

Once an all-boys school, Seika High, a renowned school full of reckless and filthy students, has recently become a co-ed school. However, with the female population still remaining a minority even after the change over the recent years, Misaki Ayuzawa takes it into her own hands to reform the school and allow a chance for the girls to feel safer in the rough environment. Even the teachers are on her side. Training, studying and even becoming the first female student council president of the school, Misaki has gained a reputation, among the male students body as an uptight boy-hating demon dictator and as a shining hope for the teachers and fellow female students. However, despite her tough-as-nails appearance, she secretly works part-time at a maid café in order to support her family. Unfortunately, her secret is soon discovered by Takumi Usui, a popular boy at Seika High.

Story: Maid-sama is a purely episodic show where the plot takes a back seat to everything else. There are a few story arcs but they are rather short and overall I found the story to be rather boring overall. I would say the best part about the episodic nature of this series is the comedy elements.  They were the only redeeming quality of the story as they were decent throughout. But the story itself was super cliche. Basically Usui is the perfect guy and is good at everything he does which means that no matter what if he is involved you know everything will turn out fine in the end. This made the show a lot less interesting for me.

The animation: for Maid-Sama was done by Jc-Staff. It is overall pretty average. Nothing really stood out in this series it was just an average level of animation that you could find in the majority of slice of life's out there on the market.

Sound:  Also nothing spectacular.  The soundtrack for the series left no lasting impression on me and along with the opening song was pretty forgettable. I do think that the Japanese cast was very well played and I think Misaki's VA did a great job at filling the role. It should also be noted that you should avoid the dub at all costs. I don't hate dubs but this is probably the worst dub I have heard yet. I felt that the actors/actresses  put no emotion into the characters.

Characters: Another aspect of this show that really didn't stand out for me.  Like I mentioned earlier the main male protagonist Usui was very bland and had little to no development. When the show started he was already portrayed as this  character that was better then everyone else so he had no where to go from there. He isn't presented with any major challenges throughout the series.  Misaki on the other hand is a decent character and what I would like to call a good example of what a Tsundere should be. She has some very good moments and is overall a very likable character. I think her character is the one that develops the most in the series. Unlike most Tsunderes that can be to over the top to be likable Misaki finds that good middle ground and truly portrays what a good Tsundere can do. The only issue is outside of her the rest of the characters are very forgettable.

Enjoyment: I thought this was a pretty average series overall. It had a few really good comedy moments and I think it did a great job at developing its main heroine Misaki, but outside of that everything else was very forgettable and I would not recommend watching it when there are so many better romances out there.

Recommendations: Toradora which is another much better done romance show with a Tsundere heroine

Kaichou wa Maid-sama is a good anime, though I would prefer the manga to it. At the end of Kaichou wa Maid-sama, you get a kiss.
That's it.
Nothing special, they don't even start going out. And that is what was most disappointing. But, in the manga you get more than a kiss.

ortiz.mavis - 2014-09-04 02:38:09

Kaichou wa Maid-sama! gave off a cheerful and enjoyable vibe, compiled with only "decent" animation. The bad, then the good: at points throughout the plot, it felt like a blur almost. Many events seemed somewhat "random" and "all over the place", however most of the time there were really well done scenes and episodes. The animation wasnt the best, yet fit the type of anime. Some animes dont require amazing animation, while some do. Some of the characters felt rather simple as well.

The good: the teasing between the two main characters was very well done, and the ending was great. While the bad wasnt "too" bad, the good was amazing.

8/10

Needless to say, Kaichou wa Maid-sama! is very popular. So I really expected a lot when I decided to watch this. The animation was nice (the guys were quite good-looking), although I wasn't a fan of the music, to be honest.

The story primarily focused between the development of the Usui and Misaki's relationship, although "development" doesn't seem like the proper word. It took our dear protagonist long enough to realize what her feelings truly were. In fact, if there's one thing I don't really like about this, it's the fact that Misaki's so clueless and naive to the point of stupidity. She's not really my favorite character. She could be annoying sometimes, and she reminds me of Special A's Hikari Hanazono. Furthermore, it's rather sad that the other characters were more interesting and more loveable; in fact, they set the flow of the story. After all, it was a bit hard to rely on Usui and Misaki's romance. Or the lack of it, for that matter.

As I mentioned, the characters are adorable - Usui Takumi (though I think the seiyuu could have been better), the three idiots, Shintani, Kanou, and many more. If you look at the plot closely, it seems as if what really happened in Maid-sama! is the introduction of the characters and Misaki's world. Let's be honest. The anime wasn't satisfying. You'd really want to read the manga. That's why, in the anime adaptation, the mini-stories would focus on the characters. In turn, these characters would, in one way or another, have a connection to Misaki. That was pretty much the gist of it.

Not bad, especially if you're a fan of rom/com and shoujo. Although the storyline isn't necessarily new, it's good for those "relaxation" days when you just want to watch something easy and light. And well, Usui Takumi is one hell of a guy, so yeah, give it a try.

The definition of a romcom. Sweet romance, and filled with funny moments.

The animation is nice, it plays a big part in the comedy as it shifts style briefly for comedic purposes.

Good soundtrack, liked it.

Likeable characters, you really root for them through out the show.

Overall, I enjoyed this show very much.

I like to eat food at new places that I hear from people that I trust. I then go to that restaurant, but end up satisfied that I got to eat, but also unsatisfied with what I received to eat. Most of the time it is like what I have eaten before but worse (I do ask for recommendations so I can get the best thing possible and end up very happy). I still take my friend's recommendations because food is food, but I am not usually completely happy with what my friends suggest is good or not.

This is how I felt about the highly acclaimed romance-comedy Kaichu wa Maid-Sama. I heard from many people who watched anime that this was a staple and guiding line to what rom-coms should be like. Being a huge fan for rom-coms I watched it, and I came out moderately unsatisfied. I don't completely understand why people talk this anime so highly, but that is their opinion, and this is mine.

Story: 6

To start things off, the story of Kaichou wa Maid-Sama is pretty simple. Our main female character Misaki is the student council president of her high school named Seika High, and is known as the Devil when it comes to how she reforms the school to suit the girl students better, since her first year was the first year that Seika has allowed for girls to enter. What we learn soon after is when Misaki is done with school she goes to her part job as a Maid waitress at Maid Latte. A complete 180 degree flip from her demon-ish self at school, that the boys put her as. It is here where Usui, the main male character, who is a hit with the ladies, finds out her secret that she works at that maid cafe, and starts chasing after because he finds her interesting. After the first episode, the anime starts taking an arc style approach to how it is told.

The arc style isn't trypically bad for rom-coms, but done incorrectly it can lead to having way too much time wasted, and fillers becoming rampant the anime. In the beginning of the anime with each of the arcs that come into play with this anime were interesting. The only problem is that this anime fell into the arc style trap. The plot slowed down immensely, and tons of filler episodes that play little to no meaning starting being shown. Since the episodes paid no meaning, the romance and comedy starts to get stale, and replicated itself into a Tonari no Kaibutsu-Kun (even though this came way before that) where the whole anime goes absolutely nowhere, and becomes pointless. Which is a real shame because I would have liked more romance story line instead of comedic filler.

Animation: 7

The animation to this anime was created by studio J.C. Staff, and the animation itself was pretty standard itself. The characters themselves are colorful, and showcases the three basic emotions of love, embarrassment, and happiness. I can't really say much more than that. The animation was average at best, and even the pop-out comedy animation and transitions were only okay to look at. Nothing is noteworthy, and is a little saddening since the animation plays a huge role into making this genre of anime stand out among others.

Sound: 6

I didn't find anything noteworthy either in this category either. I know some people really like this anime's OST, but this really can't hold itself up to other anime in this genre at the time of its release and before it. The main reason being because I felt like the music in the OST was mainly meant for whatever scene it was placed in, and having no other purpose than that. Since, not many scenes in this anime were memorable for me, it left the songs in the OST relatively useless.

Now onto the beginnings and endings, I can say I didn't like them. The animation for the opening, and both endings were very nice. But the songs themselves weren't very remarkable. It sounded like the standard J-Pop song with bland electronics and a semi-catchy hook in its chorus. A fairly poor showing in the aspects of sound.

Characters: 8

Whoo! I liked the characters in this anime. The characters in any rom-com should be the catalyst for getting your story moving, and this anime did that. Both Usui and Misaki were very charming characters with a lot of depth to both of them. Misaki our female lead shows the most depth with her actions to be both the hard, and integrity-ridden along with soft, and kind when need be. Usui who starts as a cold, calculated character develops into the witty, funny character who knows everything. Somehow though, this anime combined both of those characters into a dynamic and entertaining duo to watch. Their interactions are probably the best thing when it comes to this anime.

Now, there are other characters in this series like: Yukimura, Hinata, Shizuko, Sakura, the Chief, Kano, the Idiot Trio, etc. But there relevance isn't really necessary, even though some of them bring great comedy to the anime (like Yukimura for reasons), they are rarely get much screen time and are there to bring your mind off both Usui and Misaki.

Final Verdict: 7, Stream It

I know there are people who love this anime to death, Hummingbird's score is a 4.11/5.00 right now, and that means people really gotta like this anime, but I do not. I personally found this anime to be a little too repetitive with its comedy, and took too long to get anywhere with its romance, which is barely anywhere at all. But it should be reminded to people who watch romantic comedy anime that most of the time you may barely get a kiss, and have to suffice with using your imagination with happened in the end, or read the manga. I don't want to do either, so I'll just end it with Kaichou wa Maid-Sama being nothing spectactular, but it is worth the watch if you have time because you may like it more than I did.

oschuster - 2013-08-19 09:31:49

I'll make this a short review.

Kaichou wa Maid sama (or Maid Sama) is a shoujo anime directed by J.C Staff that runs for 26 episodes with 2 specials. I'm always the one to keep low expectations, and to enjoy romcoms. However I did not seem to go far with Maid Sama. It gets tonnes of praise for the "sweet romance and comedy", however it really just goes on average with that.

STORY - 4/10

Plot - 2/5

It's really nothing special yet peeks the interests of many. Once an all boys school has finally become coed, however the females are only a minority and are felt outcasted by the males. Then a girl named Misaki got the position of Council President, who is known to be man-hating and dangerous. Thanks to that, the females can have a nice spot. The males on the other hand, are now low even though they're big on numbers. Being one of the top students and trustworthy ones, a popular, cool boy who goes by Usui Takumi arrives...

After tumbling on Misaki he started to get interested in her on how she is a tough girl and one of those girls that don't get interested in the popular guys. But what he discovers is Misaki's biggest secret - she works in a maid cafe!

Delivery - 2/5

I can't really say it does a bad job on what it's doing, but then again WHAT IS IT REALLY DOING? The plot is basically supposed to be nonexistent, except for the fact that the maid thing should be a secret. There are times I laughed, found interesting and would watch, which was a rare case. To put the plot together: it's a popular guy hanging onto a student president (who's secretly a maid)'s butt for 26 episodes. The thing gets really repetitive and predictable, and the comedy gets really cheap too.

It also has some villains in episodes that discovers her secret, which I found at least a little interesting. However they only show up one episode and it's really damn obvious what's going to happen after, the hero always wins.

All in all it's a predictable and almost nonexistent plot.

Animation - 3/10

I mayn't be an avid watcher of anime and gets amazed by any art, I can't stand Maid Sama's animation. It felt cheap, really cheap. Only about 3 frames used per scene. They look like they are jumping when they're walking when zoomed in. It had derps, the background felt like a 5 minute water paint and the only good thing were the character designs. Horrible animation, but a decent character design.

Sound - 4/10

Ost - 1/5

The OP and Ed were completely forgettable and so was the inner soundtrack of romantic moments. The only way this section got a point was because of the UxMi (or whatever the band's name is) song from the last few episode.

Voice Acting - 3/5

I guess I can say this part is fairly done. Misaki had a nice VA and so did Usui along with the minor characters. If one thing was a little memorable about the minor characters, it was their voices.

Character - 6/10

Design - 4/5

I thought the character designs were nice and fitting. Usui as the perfect guy, Misaki can look nice in both maid and student uniform and even the minors were nice. Well... almost. Every blond villain looked like Usui. Did Usui practice shadow clone in his spare time? Or was the author lousy? If you were to put "Takumi" as their family names everyone'd believe they were related. minus 1 point

Development - 2/5

As much as the two main characters were fun to watch. I'll admit I really liked their character. However they are quite predictable and it was so obvious what will happen in the end. The minors are there just to add "comedy", and nothing else. They were forgettable at most, and the Usui clone villains only turned up one episode. However Usui's love rival was the only one actually worth seeing. He was the most 3D character out of them all, too bad he only got 3 episodes of focus.

Enjoyment - 3/10

There were a few times I was interested and wanted to watch, but the rest got old, lousy and predictable. I don't see the appeal of the show aside from the main characters. It really is just another generic romcom and its easy to tell what's going to happen.

Overall - 4/10
