Mitsudomoe

みつどもえ

The 11-year-old Marui triplets could not be any more different. The oldest one, Mitsuba, is sadistic and kind of mature for her age. The middle one, Futaba, is perverted and very athletic and has the strength of a full-grown man. The youngest one, Hitoha, is generally very quiet and gentle but when push comes to shove, she might just be the strongest, the most perverted and the most sadistic out of the three. The three are all in the same class, led by the newly graduated teacher Yabe Satoshi. He usually gets pushed around by the girls and, on occasion, abused but the triplets also try to lead him and the new school nurse, the clumsy Kuriyama Aiko, together. However, Yabe had no intention of dating Aiko and the methods the triplets use to accomplish their goal are highly unorthodox...

This is show is simply hilarious. The show is a pure comedy with each episode being standalone and having miniplots centering around gags in it. It centers around a new male teacher being assigned to a middle school class. This class contains the Marui triplets who are to put it mildly, difficult to deal with. As the show progresses you get to know more and more of the classmates of the triplets and their peculiar quirks. The comedy is on the mature side and I found it great fun watching the fun situations the triplets start.
The art and animation is not realistic at all and changes throughout the show for maximum comedic effect. Certain characters have a different artstyle than the main artstyle to really drive home what they are supposed to be and to increase the enjoyment you get from certain gags.
The sound and music likewise help maximize the enjoyment you get out of the gags, contributing greatly to the comedy. All voice actors does a great job in portraying the characters and acting the role they have in certain gags. The opening is pretty great too.
In terms of characters the three Marui triples have the main focus of the show. There is the sadistic Mitsuba who thinks of herself as the queen of class, the perverted and strong Futaba who loves boobs over everything and finally the dark and gloomy Hitoha who is constantly though of as communicating with spirits. There is as mentioned the newbie teacher, a clumsy nearsighted school nurse, the dangerouslooking father, the superpopular boy who has a club of stalkers and many other fun characters.
If you are looking to laugh often and loud this is the show for you. Expect gagdriven comedy with interesting and weird characters that will fully entertain you. If you don't get enough of the anime there is also a manga you can read with way more content that I fully recommend.

Mitsudomoe may not be well known, however, I think any who find themselves enjoying slice of life anime with cute characters and a story that can be picked up from anywhere will enjoy this clever title. However be warned, it can be slightly... lewd at times.

Time for a little questionnaire: What's the last comedy you've seen where it had NO otaku elements, had fanservice for less than a 1/3 of the show, didn't have stereotypes dictating the show's events, and had laugh out humor for the duration?....hear any cricket chirps yet?Well, I can tell you that it's been a LO----NG time since I've seen a real anime comedy come out this crass... and this effective!Story: 7/10First Thought: Kodomo no Jikan. I know... that was what I thought too. And if you're only experience is the first 3-4 episodes you'll probably find only some racy toilet jokes and OTT child ruckus. Then comes in where the show detaches itself from the teacher, and when the kid's can rule!In a very real sense, the show greatly resembles the comic genius of School Rumble.1. Makes use of character humor + misunderstandings2. Mostly takes place at schoolThese simple two things allows us to take in everything because we can pretty much know what kind of mishaps and misadventures can happen as time tocks away...The kiddies though... have a very natural energetic charge to them; every action guarantees a reaction.Kids rarely take time to think or ponder about oddities. They just assume what comes natural to them and thats that! And that behavior is the greatest strength: Every set up, minus the OTT extremes, feel very real, and thus comes our warm smiles, aplomb expressions, and ultimate satisfaction. But that's not all. The show also takes into account of repelling/attracting personalities that fuel the show's signature craziness.Namely, the heroines: Mitsuba, Futaba, and Hitoha. All three behave like they know more than ordinary children do; typical.Eventually, the jokes focus on their character weakness, origination of their said quirks, and once everything connects, we're rooting for them!Talk about rare! The nature of the series isn't original by far, and, like I said, School Rumble supersedes this in almost every way(not to mention it's a bit more age friendly), but the realism is it's charm along with it's occasionally touching moments.Art: 6/10I used to think that this show had some of the most weirdest, most off-putting character designs ever... thankfully, a certain incest show, Oniichan no Koto Nanka Zenzen Suki Janain Dakara ne—!!(God, that's a mouthful!) earned that rank shortly. But seriously, the globular-shaped heads, cone shaped torsos, and scrappy facial features might disturb those who cling to polished, super shiny dolls.Whichever your pleasure, the maniacal designs only really apply to the characters, and the bizarre natures belie how smooth the animation gets during the comical timing.Basically, it's looks like it can't perform, but make sure you brace yourself... so something doesn't jump at you...A little gross, but.... there's always shows like Shin-chan that make this look like Michelangelo's handiwork.Sound: 6/10What probably helps the moment the most is the zany score.Mostly J-pop inspired, don't let that fool you into thinking that it'll be lazy or redundant; it's nicely timed for comic release, doesn't intrude or hamper things when it's NOT FUNNY, and it's always enhancing. So then, what's wrong? Nothing much, just that it's a typical musical score; nothing memorable or catchy.Except the theme songs, courtesy of the super awesome seiyu who play the heroines, they fire up a kiddie powered full of that signature energy that completely defines Mitsudomoe; in short, the OP does it's job WELL!The END tends to portray the slower tender side of the series.(There's also an extra END that makes use of a famous ballad. It's used for comical intentions of course, but if you aren't dying of laughter for the context it's used.... well, get that humerus transplanted!)Character: 8/10Ah, yes, what does maketh a good comedy? Why, the characters of course! The heroines, Mitsuba, Futaba, and Hitoha, primarily fuel the show having the other children absorb, further twist, and regurgitate outward the energy, but let's discuss the triplets.Mitsuba is, unofficially, a superficial sadist who loves attention and food. Regardless, she's still likable for her unmatched charisma and her innate leadership skills. Personally, she's not my favorite character but that has more to do with the overall character weakness.Futaba is probably the most likable character in the whole series, second to Hitoha(actually, they just might be tied!) Positive, upbeat, perverse, and innocent, Futaba is repels negative comments, has the endurance of a Flintstone, and is probably the most OTT element in the show.Hitoha is... for a duration a mystery. Is she evil? Is she negative incarnate? Or... is she lonely? Awkward? Misunderstood? All of it?Well, one things for sure, if Mitsuba is the prep, and Futaba is the jock, then most certainly, Hitoha is the nerd; the girl loves Gachi Rangers! She provides the most character growth of the series, and many of her developments are actually quite resonating!Other characters include Futaba's love interest(?) Shin-chan(not not Shinnosuke Ohara from Crayon Shin-chan!), who is the pretty boy of the class... without being really pretty. He's most comfortable with Futaba because of her laid back nature towards sexes, although she ultimately scares him the most! The teacher Yabecchi(whose seiyu just hast to be the most geekiest sounding voice known to man!) who's initially perceived to be the main character(a la the Kodomo no Jikan resemblance!), but the series drifts away from his hapless nature. Perhaps for the best...But his inability plus his downgraded, but ever present nerdy behavior provide much of the show's unexpected shimmers.Then... there's the father of the triplets, Soujiro. He's... uh... probably the most misunderstood anime character in history....The greatest weakness with these characters are the unequal developments; too many characters, including some main ones, don't have enough clues or hints to show rhyme or reason. This is a comedy, but it's a well made one, and should have more backbone to support itself.Still, being able to like all the cast is hard to do nowadays.Enjoyment: 9/10This is just a fun, fun show... Several gross-out moments but none of which could rival.... oh, say Panty and Stocking. The show has a lightning speed pace, with byplay so concise, so packed, and with such effect, I almost cursed the industry for making the second season a mere 8.... Grrrrrrr!Whether at home, school, at a store, or just at a booth, it all works. The characters talk, one or two characters pluck it, confusion and manic occurs, enjoy! It's a process that needs to thrown about like any formula, which is what makes the slower(it's not saying much), and human side of things feel more important than if it was just a drama.A similar series, Hanamaru Kindergarten tried to be funny with endearing, slightly overly mature cuteness, but that one couldn't achieve mass appreciation, because it's mostly alienating; you couldn't really place yourself in where everyone was.Subtract that weakness from there and add it to this show, and you have the biggest strength!Overall: 8/10I simply cherish shows like this... Too often we get stuff like Oreimo or Lucky Star that are essentially passable comedies but they rely on too many repelling elements that actually detriment one another when they should be enhancing each other for maximum effect. Then there's certain comedies like Pani Poni Dash which isn't just about parodying anime/manga but more like... anything and everything, but there was still no human side to things; just blind energy. Hit or miss. No, top examples of comedies are like Excel Saga, Azu Daioh and School Rumble, because there's a level of energy that we can feel, but also down time where we can settle and care a little.Rise and fall, rise and fall, like a roller coaster! One Piece is probably the master of this formula and thus look at how long it's been around. The art's a little funky, possibly nauseating, and the music could be called generic All the comparisons aside, the greatest thing about Mitsudomoe is that it, alone, is nothing special, but it stands as being one of the few present day animes that has the maturity to know what to do, and the craftiness to use it.I'm sorry, but even though this kid cusses in class, he helps out in class more than anyone. He's got a heart as big as his ego, so I'm gonna slap a big golden star on his hand!+ Quality comic orchestration; character humor and sit humor levels are high enough to file in as subject material for classes! Greater than the sums of it's parts.- Sadly, it's nothing special. Love or hate character designs, simple music. Pretty much just conventional stuff.
