The Kawai Complex Guide to Manors and Hostel Behavior
僕らはみんな河合荘Kazunari Usa is a high school freshman who will start living alone due to his parents now working in a different area. Excited for his new independent life, he hopes to go about his teenage days without the worry of dealing with any strange people, but as he soon discovers, his new boarding house Kawai Complex is far from ordinary. The various tenants at Kawai Complex are all quite eccentric characters. Shirosaki, Kazunari's roommate, is a pervert and masochist; Mayumi Nishikino, a borderline alcoholic office lady, hates couples because of her unfortunate luck with men; and Sayaka Watanabe, a seemingly innocent college student, enjoys leading men on. Shocked with the lack of decent individuals at his new residence, Kazunari is about to leave when he runs into shy senior student Ritsu Kawai and finds himself slowly falling in love with her. Pretty strong, but slow love story. First time I've seen a masochist supporting character.

What struck me first about this show was its art style. I love the way this show looks most of the time (though it does change to simplistic animation for comedic effect quite often). The animation is consistent throughout with catchy opening and ending themes.
The show is very much a comedy. Do not expect a serious romance story or any sort of conclusion. This show has an incredibly unsatisfying ending which did annoy me a little (apparently getting a person's phone number is a great romantic gesture).
The characters who make up the cast are all very likable. The girl is cute, the guy is rateable, the side characters are interesting, though some do tend to repeat the same types of jokes.
All in all a good time. If you liked this I would recommend The Pet Girl of Sakurasou because it has more depth and this show feels like its ripping it off a little bit. I would also recommend Daily Lives of High School Boys if you just want some pure comedy fun.

Story:
It doesn't go far, you can expect that with any High School Rom-Com. This genre is more about capturing the moment and the feeling. As such Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou does an excellent job in painting the scene and leading you on. While it is true that the plot takes the backseat often for side-plots the story still carries objective. Each episode feels like a pleasant walk and side-characters do take the spotlight often. This is where the Slice of Life does come in and there is a lot to enjoy. The end is weak, it leaves you wondering if there will be a sequel. I guess for now I am subscribed to the Manga for more.
Animation:
The animation is beautiful. Each character is given attention even the slapstick drawings are given great detail. The characters can seem a little too glossy from time to time. There is little else to complain about. Something that did catch my eye though is the artists LOVE the color Purple and Pink. I'm not sure if it was to go with the theme and story or if they just wanted to but almost every scene contained a purple/pink background, shadow, hue, etc.
Sound:
Opening and ending songs are good, they don't stand out to me but help build the mood. Very easy listening like. There are a few moments where they use a cliche soundtrack or sound effects to introduce characters or as part of a joke. You really can't expect this to be OST of the year or anything like that. The character voices are great though. The reactions and emotions are very much believable.
Characters:
This is where Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou SHINES! Each character fits an archetype that is explained very early on. While they used similar stock characters as other anime before. The writers don't let that archetype to rule the character. Each one is given depth and has their time on the spotlight. The only character that did not get her own episode was Sumiko. I half expected her to have an episode where the anime gets dark. Gladly that did not happen.
Enjoyment:
If you are tired of harem/echi high school rom-com anime with crap character and no real objective then suffer no more. This anime gives some hope back to the hopeless romantic who's looking for their 'feel-good' fix. You may feel as you approach episode 10 that no progress has been made but the antics and overall tones of this anime will drown that out and make you enjoy the slice of life it has to offer.
Overall:
Overall this is a solid anime for anyone looking to enjoy a slice of life high school rom-com. The characters are memorable and the interactions are kind enough to paint a smile on your face.

As the end of the year draws closer, I've found myself in a position where I want to get caught up on the year's more popular titles as soon as possible. Unfortunately, that also means watching shows of very similar genres back-to-back. It's not that I end up getting sick of the genre, but moreso that the faults with each series become more glaring than they normally would if I hadn't watched something from that genre in the while, and the most frequent genre suffering from this is the romantic comedy. So, did my most recent viewing manage to make itself stand out from the crowd that's begging to make it into my lineup?
Once again, I find myself in the position of having to judge a show primarily on its comedy, a process that's rarely ever less than 100% opinionated. As for Kawai Complex, I did end up laughing quite a bit throughout the series. From rampant sensual fantasies to hard-hitting slapstick, this series employs a wide variety of humor. Unfortunately, it ended up settling into a comfort zone about halfway throughout, and I actually ended up being able to predict what was going to happen. Here's the bit where Shiro wants to be abused. Here's the bit where Mayumi blows her top. Here's the bit where Sayaka acts like a horrible person. Predictability is the number one killer of comedies, and I found myself laughing less and less as the series progressed.
Fortunately, the series isn't entirely a comedy, and there's a lot of character-motivated story lines that get fleshed out quite a bit. While Usa does turn out to be a fairly typical "I have a crush on the main love interest but I'm nervous about trying to get close to her" character, he still ends up being really smart about it, and it's hard to not end up really liking him when his mistakes are those that we have to deal with in the real world all the time. Am I forcing myself on the girl I like? Am I being too nice to this group of people? How can I improve my relationship with this person? He definitely felt like he was close to transcending "character" and turning into someone that felt very real.
Ritsu also felt like much more than a standard character type, and she was easily the most interesting character in the series. Her standout feature was that she loves to read and gets intensely engrossed in whatever book she's reading, so much so that she won't even notice when someone else is talking to her. While loving books feels like an acceptable excuse for this character to exist, she ends up going well beyond that, and we slowly get to see the extremely fleshed-out introverted nature of someone who gets exhausted from trying to keep pace in social situations. As for a blossoming romance with Usa, the progression is rather slow, but the signs of it are definitely there, and following this progression make marathoning this series infinitely more enjoyable, though I will say that there were a few points where the writing really felt like it was trying to force this relationship to happen when it didn't need to do so. The slow build was there, but there were definitely points where it felt like it was rushing to get somewhere that it didn't need to get to any time soon.
As for other characters, they ended up not getting as much fleshing out as I would have liked. Shiro is a masochist who's a lot nicer than he seems, Mayumi is a slightly older woman struggling with love, Sayaka is the mean-spirited two-face, and all of them only get one episode each all to themselves. Plus, as I mentioned earlier, a lot of their comedic cards end up getting played far too often, sometimes to the point where I didn't even want them on-screen because I knew they would ruin any romantic tension that was building between Usa and Ritsu.
The animation was produced by Brain's Base (D-Frag!, My Little Monster), and this series definitely lives up to the reputation that this studio has been building over the years. Set designs were always a touch more elaborate than average to bring each environment to life, character designs were significantly more refined than the standard fair but still maintained some level of moe-ness, and Ritsu is seriously one of the cutest-looking characters I've seen this year in practically everything she does, a quality I found extremely important when showing a scene from Usa's perspective. There were also a ton of different oddities in the animation used for comedic or cinematic effect, from shrinking an entire frame into the center of the screen to bizarre lighting effects and character design morphs. Additionally, while I normally don't draw attention to this, I do want to point out that the opening animation is actually a bit awe-inspiring, as it seems to provide a glimpse into Ritsu's world of literature and her immersion in it.
There is currently no dub for this series, but if one were to be produced, it would most likely be done by Seraphim Digital. However, on the subject of original Japanese casts, both this series and Nagi no Asukara have convinced me that I need to start keeping track of how many times Kana Hanazawa (Ritsu) shows up in something that I'm watching. I believe Kawai Complex brings me up to 25 roles that I've heard her play now, and I'm certainly not getting sick of her any time soon.
The soundtrack was composed by Akito Matsuda (Baka and Test; Love, Chuunibyou, & Other Delusions), and he ends up doing what he normally does: wacky and crazy tracks for comedic moments and softer piano melodies for the more emotional scenes, though nothing in particular really stood out. The opening theme "Itsuka no, Ikutsuka no Kimi to no Sekai" was performed by fhána and opens with an upbeat pop track, while the ending theme "My Sweet Shelter" was performed by the lead female voice cast and play us out with a bouncing pop tune guaranteed to get stuck in your head.
Ultimately, while Kawai Complex certainly was one of the better comedies I've seen this year and the romance felt very natural for the most part, a comedy that ends up being incredibly predictable by the time it reaches the second half isn't something I can recommend actually purchasing.

Bokura Wa Minna Kawaisou is a personal favorite of mine. The art is beautiful and unique, the story is interesting enough to not be bored with, the music is nice and the characters are top-tier. If you're looking for a hilarious, fun, adorable and sometimes dramatic anime, this is exactly what you want. Highly recommended.

The story is pretty basic while it is that is is still enjoyable. The animation is again basic for 2014 while not being talk worthy. Sadly to say if I heard the soundtrack I might not be able to spot any song besides the opening maybe. The characters are distinguishable while having variety are not someone you will remember in a years time. Surprisingly I did enjoy the anime spite my review and I would only recommend this show to people that like the "guy cant get the girl" anime fanbase (which I do enjoy).

If you're looking for a good romance, look no further; this show does not put forth effort toward delivering a good romance story. It's a romCOM that invests mostly on its comedic aspect, which is very cleverly built around the characters and their circumstances. Of course, the romance between Usa (protagonist) and Ritsu (love-at-first-sight) exists but only for the sole purpose of its being a catalyst for a good portion of the comedy. With that said, there's no real overarching plot besides his slow progress with Ritsu over the course of the show, but that doesn't matter because that's not what the show is trying to achieve. BoKawaisou capitalizes on its characters. Their personalities are very well constructed as well as their interactions. It's, in general, a very well-written show filled with hilarious, witty dialogue that'll keep you smiling the whole way through, and has a style of animation that matches its light-hearted tone. The animation is practically flawless- high-grade artwork at its finest. Every shot is colorful and full of life (thanks to the super attractive filter :3) with very well-drawn characters and backgrounds. The show also incorporates stylistic changes in the animation to match the comedy and the occasional romance when necessary. BoKawaisou does an excellent job with providing a laugh-filled sit that'll keep you thirsty for more. It is definitely one of the best anime of this season- if not the best. It knows what it wants to achieve and does everything in its power/knowledge to do so.

Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou, a very simple story within a very entertaining anime, which deserves its praise more than what it’s given through its synopsis. When I was going through the upcoming Spring anime list, I came across this anime & the only reason it made its spot on my watch list is because of the stellar animation/graphics. Synopsis doesn’t do justice to this anime & I figured that I should write a review for it so it’ll attract more viewers who come across Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou.
Story:The main thing an anime needs is a story, which is pretty basic when it comes to Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou but that’s where the simplicity is. The story is very simple about a boy who moves into an apartment complex & lives with very unique tenants. The basic plot is very easy to understand & that’s where the story continues. The characters are very unique within each other & the things they get into together are hilarious & amusing for us. That is where the main story lies. The story is filled with strong comedy, sometimes has double meanings, which makes it even funnier for the viewers. Also throw in a small romance which involves the main character & a few emotional scenes that make you feel closer to the characters & you’ll be far from bored.
Animation:The real reason that I added this anime to my list & if this was the only reason then I would be completely satisfied. The animation is just gorgeous! I would compare it to Nagi no Asukara except that it’s not filled with that much blue but more of a rainbow effect. I feel that the scenes have a hint of every color, which makes it more amazing to the eyes since it adds a greater feel. The scenery is very detailed & has a certain style to it. You can be the judge of the how well the animation is done when you view the characters up close in certain scenes. I believe that the animation gives a an amazing style to the exaggeration of the comedy, which is just too hilarious & makes each punchline much funnier & is similar to how the comedy scenes are portrayed in Nisekoi. If anything, you’ll love to just sit back & watch the beautiful animation unravel in front of you.
Sound:I feel that the sound is normal, nothing outstanding. It goes well with the scenes & doesn’t ruin the moments but it doesn’t make you want to go out & buy the OST either, in my opinion. I find the opening & ending to be very pleasant. They have a nice flow with the anime & are worth listening to but it’s not on the level of something sung by Nagi Yanagi or KOKIA.
Character:This is the real deal! This is what makes the anime just amazing because the characters are just what pop out within the anime. Since the story is simple, the characters are what bring the life of the anime. Each of them has their unique traits & they form the group of weirdos that are just too amusing to avoid. You’ve seen these types of traits in other types of anime characters but the interaction when they are together is phenomenal in my eyes. The constant punchlines & heavy sarcasm that they throw at it each other is hilarious & will have you laughing aloud & rewinding to see it happen again. The character development is enough for them to grow on you. The anime doesn’t waste time on showing the character’s past but focuses on their present selves. I find each of the characters lovable in their own way & having them all together is just a blast! I don’t want to give you an in-depth analysis of each character since it’s worth watching yourself & analyzing them in your own way. Trust me, you’ll thank me for not ruining it for you.
Enjoyment:I seriously enjoyed this anime & I only have one episode left but I know that my views won’t be changed because of the entertainment I received through 11 episodes. I found myself laughing at the jokes & even more when there were double meanings to many jokes because I haven’t seen those often in anime. I was rewinding scenes in each episode because I just wanted to keep the laughter going. The simple story, with the amazing character interactions is what I found amusing & very entertaining. I find this anime to be the type to watch before going to sleep because it'll have you going to sleep with a warm smile on your face.
Overall:I’m picky when it comes to anime that I would like to add to my collection for future re-watching but this anime made the cut & is added to my collection. I’m glad I gave this anime a chance even if the sole reason was animation because I found that it hold much more. This is my first review & as I mentioned before, the synopsis doesn’t give the anime justice so I had to create a review & I wanted to attract any viewers who stumble upon this anime so they can give it a chance. I would highly recommend this anime & I'm sure you'll feel the same after watching it.
Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou, it will give your eyes a sweet sensation of animation & your ears will hear things that your mouth will be forced to respond with heavy laughter but it’ll be worth it because you'll be smiling at the end of it all :)
This was my first review & hope to do more in the future. Sorry for making any mistakes & thank you for reading :)
